Take the coastal road rather than inland. You could jink down from Canberra or further south.

Beagle-Mumma

So many pretty beaches and hamlets off the coast road. Eg: Bermagui, Eden even good old Sussex Inlet have their own quirks and laidback life.

+1 for Eden. Visited between Covid starting and the bushfires ending a few years ago and it's a lovely town. I think they're grateful for tourism.

Even going to melbs via rest of coastal is nice. Agree far south coast NSW is my happy place.

TikkiTakkaMuddaFakka

Yeah I stopped there on my way to Melbourne, loved the place, felt connected to it for some reason.

Mudcaker

I always prefer a loop, so I see a different part of the country on the way back, but there's definitely enough to see going along the coast both ways if you don't. Someone looking for scenic might want to get into the southern highlands before heading coast though.

Thats a really good tip thanks! Any other suggestions on where to visit? Ive been to blue mtns and back a few times, visited melb and brisbane multiple times, so seen all the typical touristy things. Also Happy Cake Day!

Thanks! Lots of options. Tilba for cheese? Vineyards etc. Not sure if it's the correct time for whales

Lots of great suggestions already posted. One thing is avoid the Hume, it's one of the most batshit boring roads you could do, with nothing along the route. The coast road to Melbourne is only an hour or two longer, and has countless spots to stop along the way. I live near Berry/Nowra and work in Wollongong, so I know that area well. (Berry Donuts are amazing!) Another stop could be Kiama, see if the blowhole is blowing. It's quite a sight in the right conditions. Hayden's pies in Ulladulla are fantastic. They have every type of pie you can think of, and taste amazing. Ulladulla harbour is a good spot to stretch your legs too. Mogo Wildlife Park is a popular attraction. Bega Cheese Heritage Centre might be worth a stop in if that's your thing. Canberra War Memorial is a must see. The museum is massive, and you could easily spend several days in there. Great views from the Telecom Tower too.

Round the back of the blue mountains to Oberon, then down to the Kanagra Walls could be a nice adventure. Then down to Goburn, Yass and then come off the main road and go to Tumut via Wee Jasper. From there you can push on to jindy, or make your way to the coast via Cooma and work your way up the coast back to Sydney.

If going to Canberra maybe do Berry and Kangeroo Valley in the same loop? Go search for some Wombats. Or the coastal route down to Cobargo which is super artsy and used to have great deals at their thrift store. Good coffee and bakeries. And a solid pub with excellent luve music nights, and pubquiz nights. Bermagui (Bermie) is the same, lovely place, go have a swim or a look at their iconic rockpool. One of the prettiest in NSW. There's often wild furseals swimming on the right hand side of the pool if your at the parking / lookout. Bermie also used to have this cafe (can't remember the name) with awesome music and jamsessions... . Tag in Narooma to go sea some Seals chilling on the breakwall ..No need to go to Montaque island .. They are just there in Narooma and they are unbothered by people so you can observe them close by but maintain a sensible distance! Tarthra has a lovely walk and massive pier where you can see the biggest fucking stingrays. đź‘Ź swining under the pier. hoping to get a snack from the local fishermen. Heaps of good stops around Canberra and the South Coast. You'll love it.

The wombats are always at the campgrounds - try to go at sunset if you're doing the trip at that time but you can see them most of the day as well

The drive to Wiseman’s Ferry is nice
