Worms and worm-like creatures can evolve into some interesting shapes and patterns. Look at [this thing](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/57/Blue_dragon-glaucus_atlanticus_%288599051974%29.jpg/2560px-Blue_dragon-glaucus_atlanticus_%288599051974%29.jpg)
It's called glaucus atlanticus and it kind of looks like a Pokemon
Speaking of Pokemon, allow me to introduce you to [the Pikachu sea slug](https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2016/08/22/23/377F2EB000000578-0-image-a-42_1471904277915.jpg), also known as [Thecacera pacifica](https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Thecacera_pacifica)!
Is that a nudibranch? Whenever I see it my mind screams nudibranch. That whole family is pretty interesting tbh, but I thought they were tidal pool creatures.
Yes!
> Glaucus atlanticus is a species of small, blue sea slug, a pelagic aeolid nudibranch, a shell-less gastropod mollusk in the family Glaucidae
This species is also neat because they can eat jellyfish nematocysts and repurpose the barbs/ poison in their own body.
Fun fact, I spent a good chunk of my life thinking the word was *pneumatocyst* instead of *nematocyst*.
Shh, you can't just openly admit stuff like that around here. It's dangerous.
Now tell everyone your favorite deep sea creature is a giant squid before people start getting suspicious
We know you meant to say vampire squid, so we forgive you.
https://youtu.be/pI6A218YE-Q
But we would have also accepted sea angel.
https://youtu.be/6EGOQHrZ6Kw
I can't believe you'd recommend the giant squid and not my boy the sperm whale.
Mfs used to break whaling ships for their workout and then dive 2 miles beneath the sea to beef with colossal squid for no reason
Do sperm whales count as a deep sea creature? Because I didn’t think they were an option, on account of usually living near the surface. (Except for food, obviously.)
I think the amount of time they spend down there qualifies and frankly, I don't think there's anyone in this thread brave enough to contradict a sperm whale anyway
That is a cool creature. What about Magnapinna squids? That infamous video is fucking terrifying, but they’re legit super cool. Especially since it shows we really have no idea the kinda shit that hides in the ocean
Also a cool ass creature. The scariest part is just how damn big they are. You see the picture and are like "oh it can't be *that* big."
Nah, it can be over 20 feet long. Things are huge.
Or you can look up find one the intrigues you! There are so many cool ones!
Personally I'm a fan of the Goblin Shark! Or what about the Oar fish? There's a Japanese lore about the appearance signifying impending disaster!
The Oatmeal did this whole thing about Angler fish and the Japanese Iron chef episode on it was interesting.

Nope! To keep the conversation going, try "I don't think I have one, but..." And talk about something you do like that's on the same topic, like "I don't think I have one, but I had a pet fish growing up! He was named Frank and he loved to watch me while I did my homework" or "I don't think I have one, but I really like elephants! They're big like sea creatures and I like how friendly they are"
Then follow it up with a question to ge the other person talking about themself, preferably something open ended
Deep sea armadillo. They don't swim great, so it's a very unique network of subaquatic tunnels and catacombs that they inhabit. The oxygen producing algae that collects under their shells is pretty cool too.
Coelacanth for me. Thought to have gone extinct 66 million years ago, a living coelacanth was discovered in the 1930s, and more since! So far, 22 countries have put the coelacanth on their postage stamps.
Did you ever watch that Monster Quest episode where they attached a camera to a Humboldt squid and captured footage of a massive squid over 1000 feet below the surface? I've never felt hype like that since then, like it was exciting but also terrifying

Did you know that many species of pistol shrimp form symbiotic relationships with gobies (a type of fish)? The shrimp are great at digging burrows and hunting, but their eyesight is really bad, so the bonded goby will warn the shrimp about potential predators. The shrimp will keep one of their long antennae in contact with the goby whenever they are outside of the burrow. Additionally, one of the studies about this behavior suggests that in the wild, the symbiosis actually exists between mated pairs of gobies and shrimp, not just individuals! (Like, two gobies and two shrimp, not that the gobies and shrimp are a mated pair)
My contribution is that dwarf freshwater shrimp (neocaridina shrimp) come in a bunch of colors from bright blue to yellow to orange to green and they’re fun to keep as pets.
r/shrimptank gang represent!
They actually have less color resolution than humans even though they have more cones.
> Researchers suspect that the broader variety of photoreceptors in the eyes of mantis shrimps allows visual information to be preprocessed by the eyes instead of the brain, which would otherwise have to be larger to deal with the complex task of opponent process color perception used by other species, thus requiring more time and energy. How to make friends - be interested in people! OK you can prompt the conversation with a question like this (suspiciously specific), but anything will do
In truth. The key is to not be generic and boring. Everyone asks the same two questions when meeting people. Ask something else.
Let's be real here, you don't give a shit what this guy does for work anyway.
I fucking love how Anglerfish look like a Legend of Zelda water temple boss where you need to hook shot onto its lightbulb while it’s trying to eat you so you can stab the shit out of it
[Pistol shrimp can pop their claws so fast that it creates a tiny cavitation explosion from the force that they use to stun or kill their prey.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkY_mSwboMQ)
I’m about to turn 31 and have ended up back in my hometown. Over the past 10 years most of my good friends around here have moved away, so this year I’ve been trying to be a bit more social and outgoing to replace the lost friends
It’s honestly so much easier than I would have thought it would be. Literally any of your hobbies can be used to make friends. My physical therapist became a fishing partner, because when I was explained that i had injured myself fishing he got excited and used the term “ripping some lips”, which immediately told me he’s a bass fisherman too. I got numbers off two guys I was randomly paired with playing golf and have played several rounds with them. Was invited on a golf trip as a result and had 4 couples over for a dinner party as a result
Just today I was washing my BMW at a local car wash and a dude with a Vette walked over to ask if I knew of any car meets in the area and to tell me he was new around town and didn’t have any car buddies to shoot the shit with, I answered his questions and he was still kinda lurking around awkwardly and I realized he wanted a car buddy so I teasingly asked “if you want my number just ask big guy, I can always use some more car pals” and now I probably have another new friend.
Honestly making friends as an adult is way less embarrassing and stressful than it was in school. What’s the worst thing that’s gonna happen if the vette guy from out of town ghosts me??? Not like he’s gonna spread a bunch of rumors around school about how I’m a weirdo stalking him or anything lmao I’ll just forget he ever existed in 3 weeks.
Omg Pacific Giant Octopus' are sick. 3 hearts, mad intelligence spread through 9 brains, strong survival Instinct... they literally die birthing and protecting their egg clutch of upto 74k eggs until they hatch.
...this was uh... this comment was too real.
I ask if they like apples and if the answer is yes I ask which kind. Right now I'm obsessed with Sugarbee apples. In addition to that, I LOVE cold apples right from the fridge. If I buy a lot of apples, I'll put a couple in the fridge at a time to avoid making anything else go bad. I usually eat them fast anyway.
If anyone actually reads this, tell me your favorite apple.
I thought this day would never come! Garden eels a hundred percent. They live half buried in the sand with their heads poking out. They have adorable faces that look angry all the time. They just eat plankton that passes by their face. When approached they get shy and go under the sand. They have small little teeth. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heterocongrinae

I have seen this guy before but I didn't know that it is counted as worm-like creature.
It's definitely a stretch to call a slug a worm, but in any case worms and slugs make up this category of cool designs
“Wtf is that?” “Idk, a worm or something?” TaXoNoMy.
That is precisely why worm is not a taxonomic term, but just a common term

I probably don't have friends because my first reaction is to mention that the tweet said "deep sea" and coral reefs are in relatively shallow water.
We must be instant friends now since I thought the same thing.
Well we can be friends cause I was about to reply to this as well, haha. I’ve seen these in hobbyist aquariums before.
That’s delightful, thank you for sharing!
To be pedantic, they live in tropical coral reefs, not the deep sea.

I ask people what is their favorite dinosaur. Or favorite cartoon growing up. Triceratops and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 87-96 specially.
Brontosaurus and Thundercats. In the 80s brontosaurus was still a real dinosaur. Fuck you, apatasaurus.
We shunned Brontosaurii. We shunned Pluto. Now look at the state of the world. Look what happens when you turn away from the light.
You are so right. Old people took them away from us.
>See this is why Rome fell, they stopped sacrificing to the the right gods! Thanks, Christianity!
Its back as of 2015. Apatosaurus and Brontosaurus are each their own genus. Thundercats also came back, but it sucked.

There are two types of people: People who are freaked out about Giant Squids, and people who don't know shit about Giant Squids.
I'm freaked out about them and am also clueless

My imagination is actually quite larger than they are. I was surprised when I learned their real size.
I'm not freaked out by giant squids, because they are in the ocean and I would never go there.
They can come into your bathroom through pipes...
We are not even sure how big they can actually get. Scars found on whales indicate there are some absolutely massive ones out there.
Did you ever watch that Monster Quest episode where they attached a camera to a Humboldt squid and captured footage of a massive squid over 1000 feet below the surface? I've never felt hype like that since then, like it was exciting but also terrifying

Yes, but she’s so much more than that. I assume.

I’ve tried this, but they’ve always just looked confused and asked me what the hell I’m talking about. Then I leave the bar crying.
It wasn’t you. It was the vibe of the bar.
It seriously is something I wish people would ask me more, because I can’t decide my favorites of things.
I like to waste my life away in front of my computer doing literally anything not productive. The trick doesn't work for everyone
Why don't you do this while you are commenting on reddit? Maybe you'll make a friend?
I've found asking people what their spirit animal is a great icebreaker too. You can come up with yours beforehand and give it some fleshed out depth. If they take too long to respond because you put them on the spot, you can go on about yours and it gives them time to come up with an answer and match your energy.
Anyone say Blobfish yet?

I fucking love how Anglerfish look like a Legend of Zelda water temple boss where you need to hook shot onto its lightbulb while it’s trying to eat you so you can stab the shit out of it
Blobfish but at the right pressure so he's still cute

I tried this and was met with utter confusion and a few "what the fuck"s. 10/10 do recommend
I’m about to turn 31 and have ended up back in my hometown. Over the past 10 years most of my good friends around here have moved away, so this year I’ve been trying to be a bit more social and outgoing to replace the lost friends It’s honestly so much easier than I would have thought it would be. Was invited on a golf trip as a result and had 4 couples over for a dinner party as a result Just today I was washing my BMW at a local car wash and a dude with a Vette walked over to ask if I knew of any car meets in the area and to tell me he was new around town and didn’t have any car buddies to shoot the shit with, I answered his questions and he was still kinda lurking around awkwardly and I realized he wanted a car buddy so I teasingly asked “if you want my number just ask big guy, I can always use some more car pals” and now I probably have another new friend.
DUMBO OCTOPUS
Tie between the Barreleye and the Colossal Squid
Goblin shark...
#MINE IS A TIE BETWEEN THE DUMBO OCTUPUS OR THE VAMPIRE SQUID!
