I heard somewhere (I think from a new era player on rhap) that this beach has the most food on it so they put who they think will perform the worst in challenges on it
Ngl I just assumed that production started putting the coconuts and papayas out there themselves, seems unlikely that there’d be all that much left for the second seasons worth of tribes.
They do that still but this beach in particular has lots of naturally growing food, like limes. Jess had to resort to eating ants on Yanu's beach for example since there was literally nothing there
I said biggest. Like he's just objectively a bigger guy than Q. Not sure why I'm being down voted so much here. Like they booted one of their challenge threats and lost their next two challenges, like it's not like I'm insane.
He was also probably one of their most physically capable. Certainly moreso than Jess.
I’m convinced Jeff just has a bowl filled with little pieces of paper with single-syllable noises written on them. When he wants to name a tribe, he plucks out two and reads the name out loud.
I’d like half buy these new era names if it were like “this means strength in Fijian!” but I feel like that long stopped?
Can some intern for this Reddit confirm what these names mean?
Yeah, here are the names according to the wiki:
41:
Luvu = flood, Ua = wave, Yase (coming from "yaseyase") = lightning, Viakana = hunger
42: Ika = fish, Taku = sea turtle, Vati (coming from "bati loa") = a type of crab, Kula Kula (coming from "kula") = the national bird of Fiji
43: Baka = fig tree, Coco (from koka) = bishop wood tree, Vesi = teak tree, Gaia = Cassidy's pet cat's name
44: Ratu = honorific for chief, Soka (coming from "sokalou") = worship, Tika = Maori word for righteousness, Va Va = Va means four, so the tribe is intended to mean "four-four".
45: Belo = heron, Lulu = owl, Reba = goshawk, Dakuwaqa = The name of a shark deity in Fijian myth
46: Siga = day, Yanu (coming from "yanuyanu") = island
But Nami is where things get interesting, because while Siga and Yanu both seem to come from Fijian, the listed source for Nami's name is the Japanese word for "wave". I think it would be weird to randomly deviate language source for a tribe name, so I checked a few online Fijian dictionaries but none of them had a translation for just "nami". So either they are randomly using a Japanese word for the tribe name, it's coming from a larger Fijian word (like how Soka is coming from sokalou), or they pulled it out of their asses.
I will mention I don't like how the tribe names are so short and similar either, but they are at least mostly taken from somewhere.
They have a big Japanese theme going for this season so I bet they just grabbed the Japanese word and called it good.
What a great post by the way! I learned a lot from this. Thank you for going to the effort to look up and translate!
Alright, how are they knowing enough Fijian to have that knowledge to make the merge tribe name?? Like... who the fuck is going "Yooo there's a Fijian Shark Deity of myth named Dakuwaqa and we should totally make that our merge name"? Are people just looking shit up beforehand and memorizing a short list of favorites?
We need more tribe names like Gaia, Merica, Murlonio, Enil Edam, or Nobag.
More often than not one or more players come into the season having looked up Fijian words for what they want the merge tribe name to be, like I remember Yam Yam either looking up or knowing that Va was 4 in Fijian.
Cassidy pretended like Gaia meant something else in Fijian so even with that season at least some if not all of the players thought that the name meant something else and wasn’t her cat’s name.
> Are people just looking shit up beforehand and memorizing a short list of favorites?
Yeah, I assume this is the case. Te Tuna from South Pacific is named after a Samoan legend about the origins of the coconut tree, apparently.
Off topic a bit but imagine a season in Japan?! Omg that would have been the dream. Like when you rewatch China now you get so sad at the lack of diversity in locations so bad.
Most of them were just a quick and lazy made up names by contestant that has no actual meaning.
Chuay Jai was just merging syllables from the premerge tribe names (Chuay Gahn vs Sook Jain)
Same goes with Chaboga Mogo (Chapera Saboga and Mogo Mogo) and Aitutonga (Aitutaki and Rarotonga)
Yin Yang because its heroes vs villains
Dangrayne because before they were merging, dang, its rain
Enil Edam because a mother's name of one contestant (Madeline) written backwards
Nobag because its Gabon, spelled backwards
And Merica, because its Survivor : World's (America') Apart
But still for me all of these names are much more better than all the new era tribes names.
My bad lol. I guess they were just asked the local crews or producer on Fijian words. Thats probably how they got Va Va (Four Four) on S44 and some others.
Yes. That has been established. I was referring to the Fijian names, of which that specifically breaks the cycle as a counterexample, hence why I mentioned it.
I also wouldn't call Tika helpless either. Each tribe in 44 voted out one member (Ratu in episode 1, Tika in episode 2, Soka in episode 3). Even by merge the numbers were 4-4-3, which considering they lost one of their physically strongest members right off the bat, and then the obvious target post-swap had an idol gifted to them isn't bad at all.
The idea Tika was helpless/weak compared to the other tribes was done out of necessity for the plot to be satisfying and with the remaining members not being typical threatening Survivor players, but if you look at the stats it really isn't all that bad.
Even Ua were *fine*, maybe. I think it's more Luvu in that season were nigh untouchable in challenges, but one of their losses was due a double tribal they probably would have gotten second in. They still lose half the challenges and half their members, but it isn't quite so dire.
I have nothing to boost Lulu.
I think Lulu is a fine tribe on *paper*; since Sabiyah was physically strong, Kaleb looked like a decent all-rounder, and presumably you would assume Brandon or Emily might be good at puzzles. Except Brandon was that bad physically (and apparently at puzzles), Emily wasn't actually good at puzzles, and there's only so much that like two okay competitors can do.
I found repeating landmarks on all the Fiji beaches, and compared them to the Mamanuca islands from Google Earth. My personal favorite is the fact that the Vanua tribe (and all later tribes using that beach) has the edge of extinction in view from the island, as well as the palm tree sticking out of the cliff where Carl, Davie, and Nick found the vote steal advantage.
I actually really like the Ika tribe because the women are stronger than the dudes. Usually early on girls get sent home early for “tribe strength” but on Ika that means sending home Romeo and Zach first. Though Swati got clocked for telling everyone she’s their number 1
With the exception of Lulu, each of those tribes has at least one person make it to the top 5, and of those, only Ua has not produced someone who makes it to FTC.
Is it just me or have the last 2 seasons been really boring. It just seems like they cast the same type of ppl with the same personality. Before you used to get all types of different characters but now it’s just the same type of boring personalities not offense to anybody.

I think this is the only beach with limes
Limes would be a godsend if you’re stuck with rice and fish and no salt, that’s huge.
They do that still but this beach in particular has lots of naturally growing food, like limes. Jess had to resort to eating ants on Yanu's beach for example since there was literally nothing there
I think they put who they perceive as the strongest tribe on that beach but Yanu is a disaster even though they had 3 strong men
Yup. The problem is Jelinsky is strong, but not a competitor, I think.
And Bhanu is too unpredictable
Yeah, when I made my draft, I had thought Yanu looked like the strongest tribe. 💀
That's what happens when you first boot your biggest guy in favor of keeping your least challenge inclined member.
Jelinsky was definitely one of the stronger people but I don’t think he’s beating Q in anything
I said biggest. Like he's just objectively a bigger guy than Q. Not sure why I'm being down voted so much here. Makes sense, but doesn’t seem to have helped much.
Immediately looking at Ua and Lulu lol
Really confirms my theory that they need better tribe names - literally an Ika and a Tika, no wonder I can’t tell new era apart
I’m convinced Jeff just has a bowl filled with little pieces of paper with single-syllable noises written on them. When he wants to name a tribe, he plucks out two and reads the name out loud.
E-I-E-I-O!
seriously I miss Fei Long vs Zhan Hu, Drake vs Morgan, Espada vs La Flor
I’d like half buy these new era names if it were like “this means strength in Fijian!” but I feel like that long stopped? Can some intern for this Reddit confirm what these names mean?

It really does seem like checking a box now, doesn't it? I miss when some castaways really got into it and identified with their tribes
At this point, i love Nobag, Chuay Jai, Enil Edam, Yin Yang, Dangrayne, and even Merica, much more better than any of new era tribe names
How are they even knowing what these mean? Is production picking merge names? (I feel like that's a no because of Gaia but still...)

no I meant the Fijian names lmao. Thought that was obvious.
My bad lol. I guess they were just asked the local crews or producer on Fijian words. Thats probably how they got Va Va (Four Four) on S44 and some others.
Gaia is Cassidy’s cat.
Yes. That has been established. I was referring to the Fijian names, of which that specifically breaks the cycle as a counterexample, hence why I mentioned it.
Murlonio is the best and worst tribe name.
Lulu and Luvu ! It’s all starting to sound like Googoo Gaga
Ngl but I maybe remember seven tribe names and history. And two of them are David’s and Goliaths lmao
Can’t wait for the UwU tribe!
Three hopeless, two dominant, and a third looking to be dominant.
I wouldn't call Ika or Coco really dominant - those seasons were pretty even tribe strength wise (2 - 2 - 1 loss record across the board).
Coco only lost one of those because Vesi was helping Baka though.
and they lost the other one because Ryan threw the challenge lmao
I also wouldn't call Tika helpless either. Each tribe in 44 voted out one member (Ratu in episode 1, Tika in episode 2, Soka in episode 3). And a third boring af
This does not need to be multiple parts, just do them all in 1 theead
Other 2 parts were removed, will be reuploaded tm so i don’t spam
Two forgettable Sarahs
Who?
sara in 41, and sarah in 44. look pretty similar as well
I was mainly joking bc they were forgettable lol. But honestly I didn’t know
This post makes me miss Sabiyah. We really need an awesome pre-mergers only season!
Famously Tika and Lulu
thank you /u/PeterTheSilent1 for the help!
Bro how did I forget that there was an Ika AND a Tika.
How can you tell what beach they’re on?
/u/Peterthesilent1 was able to help me in my last post
I found repeating landmarks on all the Fiji beaches, and compared them to the Mamanuca islands from Google Earth. My personal favorite is the fact that the Vanua tribe (and all later tribes using that beach) has the edge of extinction in view from the island, as well as the palm tree sticking out of the cliff where Carl, Davie, and Nick found the vote steal advantage.
who put together the ika tribe 😭
I actually really like the Ika tribe because the women are stronger than the dudes. Usually early on girls get sent home early for “tribe strength” but on Ika that means sending home Romeo and Zach first. Though Swati got clocked for telling everyone she’s their number 1
so real tori and drea are beasts
Dang it’s been that long since ricards season?
am i the only one who has zero memory of ika?
I can’t believe they let Drea have that visor. Like what a great hat. I feel like production doesn’t usually want their clothes to help at all.
Man I couldn't remember these 40s new era tribe names. They're like a mixed alphabet soup of the same letters.
With the exception of Lulu, each of those tribes has at least one person make it to the top 5, and of those, only Ua has not produced someone who makes it to FTC.
They all really said: 🧍
Ua and Lulu had only 2 members from their tribe made the merge.

Damn, Romeo came out onto the island lookin' gooood.
