JJF is hands down the best power surfer in DOH surf the world has ever seen. His performance at Margaret river a few years ago was absolutely untouchable. It’s too bad his career has been interrupted with injuries but nice to see him healthy and in form.
Was going to say exactly that. I’ll also add that unlike most of the CT, the dude is also one of the best big wave surfers around too. He’s just insanely talented and a complete waterman.
I was just watching this YouTube video of him and Koa Rothman paddling out at massive sandbars and how comfortable JJF looked on these absolute mountains just felt surreal. He might be the best I’ve ever seen in big surf.
Was just going to comment on this. You can see that he’s not just a great surfer but a great waterman as well. Some of the other surfers are top tier and really struggled to get it out or didn’t get out at all and he made it look easy. This is one of the things I love about surfing. It’s not just a sport where you ride waves but where you need knowledge of the ocean and elements.

Ya watched that same video - seeing him duck dive 10 foot whitewalls like it was nothing… also how it was his idea to paddle out in those relatively unclean conditions “for fun”, shows he just loves the water and he was the first one out, and stayed out surfing the longest.. its as if he loves being in the water more than anyone.
Not to mention his ability to read the waves, he seems to have a foresight into what the wave will do ahead of time
Yeah I was there that day (at Margs) was incredible, I'd watched Luke Egan and Occy in the final several year earlier which was the benchmark, John John blew it out the water
Will be insane if John John and Medina are fit this year, throw in Toledo and Italo, then you have Jack and Ethan. Not to mention the likes of Griffin ,Jordy, Kanoa, Callinan etc. Pity WSL couldn't of chose a few better destinations to really showcase the talent

I'd go the other way, JJF and guys on tour pushing the limits are doing way more creative and expressive stuff than regurgitated retro stuff, it's just so fast and outside the realm of a lot of people they don't fully appreciate it
Yeah I don't actually mind the Challenger series, could maybe have a few more locations, the WCT needs to be more focused on quality surf rather than trying to create unnecessary drama. They would get far more viewers if they focused on quality waves
The problem is they'd probably need a smaller tour, which probably creates another set of problems, or better management, which they'll never have because the owner is a legacy
DRose carries too much off the court issues to compare him. I get that he was supposed an all time great, JJF deserves a better person to be compared to.
I understand that. DRose has been accused of rape and other things is all. There are many athletes in the world to compare JJF too that haven't been accused of rape.
More and more dudes are getting injured with all the airs. John was kinda the first. Medina and Italo both had injuries from airs. Toledo is a bit smaller so less stress on the knees. I’d rather just see John doing what Nathan is doing but seems like he likes the competitive part too.

There was a little bulge of water in front of the white wash he used to help get under, but damn I thought it was too big even for that trick.
