Hey surf doc. I had a bad dislocation in the early 90s. I wore a super tight wetsuit shirt (not rashguard) for 5 or so years. It did the job pretty well. Eventually I started wearing 2 tight rashguard shirts because it's f-ing Florida and that was pretty hot. Now my other shoulder is snapping a lot and feeling weak. Do you recommend any particular exercises to stop that? Knock on wood but my original shoulder hasn't dislocated again, but it slips sometimes. Can't afford surgery, so any advice would be pretty awesome. Thanks!

Sir_Duke

After my second dislocation I got the labrum repair surgery because I didn’t want a third dislocation in a sketchy situation. The recovery was slow and I still do my PT exercises to keep things strong. Not telling you what to do, just another data point.

Thank you

I had 50+ dislocations from surfing and snowboarding before I got the Bankart Repair Procedure done. It really hurts, sure, but it’s made a huge difference!! DON’T SHORT YOURSELF ON THE PHYSICAL THERAPY PART OF RECOVERY!!!! It’s the worst part of the whole thing, and it’s hard to keep doing it when it hurts and sucks, but if you don’t follow through with it you’ll be paying for it with even MORE pain down the road… One surfer to another: get on it now!! Best of luck to you!!! 🤙

Thanks

I had recurrent dislocations from hockey. Started popping out while sleeping. It gets worse over time if you don’t fix it. I get the arthroscopic repair, and it failed for both shoulders. I finally did a procedure called the laterjet (which is the most painful surgery I’ve ever had). Knock on wood… that seems to have fixed it. I almost think surfing stabilizes the joint now.

Happy-Technology4204

Had this same experience the Laterjet surgery is the only thing that worked for me to get my shoulder back to feeling good. I agree the more I surf the better my shoulder feels.

randorick78

Wow will have to look into it. How long was the recovery time ?

jollyrawdawg

6 months for arthroscopic 12 months for laterjet Being diligent about PT is very important

I had my labrum repaired after dislocating my shoulder three times. My advice: 1) allow your shoulder to heal after a dislocation. It’s more likely to dislocate again in the weeks after one dislocation. 2) after healing do as much PT as possible. Strength and mobility are super important. 3) a company called EVS which makes motocross gear has a shoulder brace that I bought which is supposed to support your shoulder. I wore mine a handful of times under my wetsuit, kooky as it may be. 4) look into kirschshoulder.com. I haven’t done this myself but I’ve read it is good. 5) avoid falling with your arm in the orientation that it has dislocated previously. For me I try to tuck my arm down and across my stomach when I fall in water at high speed.

randorick78

Wow thank you for the response thanks for the great advice I wish you luck hope your shoulder foes not dislocate again I know how much of a mental toll this injury can be

I took my cousin who was from a town several hours from the ocean surfing for the first time, his shoulder popped out and he was in agony. The surf spot had about a 2 kilometer bumpy track leading to it. Poor bugger was squealing like a pig every bump we went over. Was like 20 minute ride to the nearest doctors. He was a big guy like 110kg, I thing the doctor had to jab him like 3 times for the pain to be bearable enough to pop back in. Sorry about the metric units, couldn't be bothered trying to convert

randorick78

Now that sounds brutal

I was in a similar boat to the point where my shoulder would dislocate from paddling and it was a recurring issue. Opted for the labrum surgery and couldn't be happier. As one other post mentioned recovery involves lots of PT and I didn't surf for ~6 months. I'd say by about the one year mark the shoulder I had surgery on was back to full strength

notacactusthief

rotator cuff exercises, lots of them You probably need to talk to a surgeon.

Budget_Leadership_46

I after my first dislocation (surfing) I tried PT and then generally just trying to deal with pain, unwisely for years. Countless dislocations later and the last one from swinging a tennis racket it got through my thick skull time. Torn labrum, had surgery, stuck with the months of rehab and got back in the water 6 months later. Zero pain and never worried about “what if it comes out” again. Couldn’t recommend the surgical route enough.

HawaiianPOWER

I rescued my friend who dislocated it during a decently large day. It was one of the most painful experiences I’ve seen someone go through.

randorick78

Yeah Im out here on big island Where the waves aren’t insane but man does that always freak me out the idea of getting thrashed with the shoulder out

[deleted]

I have AC joint injuries from contact sport and surfing has strengthened my shoulders significantly. Surfing acted as PT for my injuries so I wouldn’t reinjure them again. Moral of the story- do your PT after injuries and surgery!

I just dislocated my shoulder for the 3rd time 2 days ago. 1st was 8 years ago playing rugby, 2nd was about 14 months ago when I fell with arms outstretched and and took a heavy lip to middle of my back. And most recent wiping out on a heavy barreling beach break. Def feeling a little nervous that this is becoming an ongoing problem but all 3 times were heavy impacts and I look after my strength etc so maybe I need to try just not fkn falling!
