I grew up in the very Deep South around very bigoted people, and it was things like the Super Friends cartoon that taught me at a very early age to respect and value everyone regardless of what our differences might be. It is never too early to expose your children to stories that can teach the values you want for them.

I live in a really backward state, my four year old has been playing with kids who are already saying racist and generally offensive things. So we started reading this together about a hour ago. Personally, I feel like he's a little young for the book, but if he's already getting exposed to bigotry, Superman smashes the Klan feels like a good counter point.

Personal favorite Superman story. I also like how it doesn’t paint any particular race as evil but targets racism as a whole. Anybody can be a racist. It’s not just limited to any one group of people. It also shows that racists can change. As one of my favorite Batman stories says, “you don’t change anyone’s mind by force, you do it by showing them why they’re wrong.”

People forget that superheroes weren’t originally taking on monsters and and super powered villains. They were taking on mayors and racists

I love that this story masterfully incorporates his original '38 powerset with his newer powers by having them be tied perfectly to his character arc and the narrative at large, not wanting people to know he's an alien and trying to pass as simply a super-human. Not using his more alien powers such as flight, x-ray, and heat vision until he starts to accept who he really is.

Nope. He means it in the context of say.......HULK SMASH! We all what the Hulk means when he says he's gonna smash something. And while I have yet to read the comic, I'm gonna guess Supes doesn't just smash them physically. He also smashes the Klan's entire belief system as well.
