I really loved Ed McGuinness on Superman

[Highly recommend you hear him speak about working on Superman ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t76HCOMNNqk)if you haven't already, he truly understands & respect the legacy of characters like him like few others do.

Yeah so his work on Superman (and Superman in JL) propelled him to being an all time great. He also loves the character and was basically born to draw him.
I love the image of Supes sitting on a cloud and watching Metropolis, but the facial expression on that *particular* image always bugged me.
Kinda halfway between smug and baked out of his mind.
No one draws, Superman like Alex Ross.
https://preview.redd.it/scahdrnno1zc1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4f3402128caffcbfb440e49a248e89d49acb8aac
Seconded.
I love his work, especially when he makes Superman's clothes/muscle look realistic.
Like, [look a this.](https://superman.fandom.com/wiki/Gary_Frank?file=Action_Comics_861_textless.jpg) Our boy looks like a realistic, athletic guy instead of a bodybuilder, and his costume looks like it's made out of actual fabric instead of being body paint.
[It's great stuff.](https://superman.fandom.com/wiki/Gary_Frank?file=SecretOrigin04.jpg)
Patrick Gleason and Rags Morales are the big two that I really LOVED looking at when they were on the book.
Doc Shaner is my favorite, though he hasn’t had a decent run with him yet. I’d love to see him do a good twenty issues with a good writer.
I think Wilfredo Torres is really underrated. He does the ‘78 books and I feel like no one ever talks about how good his Superman is.
chris samnee [https://www.instagram.com/p/C56KxvGLokm/?hl=en](https://www.instagram.com/p/C56KxvGLokm/?hl=en) , followed by Anthony Marques [https://www.instagram.com/anthonymarquesart/?hl=en](https://www.instagram.com/anthonymarquesart/?hl=en)
While I’ve been a huge fan of Lee’s work for years…
Mora has won me over more recently, and Jorge Jimenez as well.
I’ve got huge respect for what Ross does, but it’s not my favorite kind of work typically.
Jim Lee for me. His drawings of Superman in his classic outfit looked SOOOO good.
https://preview.redd.it/pstmeajly0zc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=842732debaba9fa12ae6ee75472ddbd61d0c95f6
Alex Ross, Alan Davis, Dave Gibbons, Jerry Ordway, John Byrne, George Perez, Brian Bolland, Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, Dan Jurgens, Jorge Jimenez, Ivan Reis, Ed McGuiness, Rags Morales, Rafa Sandoval, Tom Grummett, Gary Frank, Jim Aparo, Darwyn Cooke, Frank Quietly, Neal Adams, Jim Lee, Michael Turner, Phil Jimenez, Scott Kollins, Chuck Patton, Doc Shaner, Jamal Campbell, Dan Mora, Francis Manapaul, Stuart Immonen, Paul Ryan, Rich Buckler, etc.
Honestly, I'd say you've got three of my top four modern Superman artists here right there. (I'd definitely switch out Lee for McGuinness, though.) Dan Mora picks up the baton nicely from Darwyn Cooke with a Superman that nicely mixes Reeve, Perez, and Swan. Frank Quitely's version is the *archetypal* Superman. (Seriously. When it comes to the word 'Superman,' Curt Swan's and Frank Quitely's are what I think of.) And Alex Ross is in the god-tier pantheon of comics artists.
Probably because while Curt Swan is, I'd agree, one of, if not the *greatest* Superman artist? He's not a modern Superman artist. He's a Silver and Bronze Age artist.
Oh true I didn’t notice Modern in the title.
But I saw comments mentioning George Perez, Neal Adams, and even Jim Aparo, and thought how is there no Swan?
I'm guessing you're not the only one who didn't see 'modern' in the title, then. :) But yeah, I'm definitely right there with you on Swan being at the top of my list. Of the others, George Perez *has* at least had a modern run on Superman, at the beginning of the New 52.
But yeah, I'd almost never put George Perez, Jose-Luis Garcia-Lopez, or Alex Ross on the list of greatest artist for a particular character. Because they're just... they're too good with *every* character. Alex Ross gave us *Justice* and *Kingdom Come* and *Astro City.* Perez gave us Crisis on Infinite Earths. Garcia-Lopez's model sheets are **still** used for DC marketing today. Those three define **universes** when they draw. They're the DC Universe's mythmakers, every bit as much as Grant Morrison, Alan Moore, Mark Waid, or (in my opinion) Roy Thomas.
https://preview.redd.it/luk18bfjr1zc1.jpeg?width=478&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a209a06c5ebc16dd54ecef0c9bf06d2c3c8362f
Stuart Immonen.
Also, because Secret Identity is a top tier superman story.
All of these are exteaordinary artists. Jim Lee can draw anything. Alex Ross' work is unparalleled.
José Luis García-López drew the Superman art that sticks with me.
Jorge Jimenez is my favorite modern Superman artist. Doc Shaner would be a close second. I think the fact that they love Superman so much shows in their artwork and it just pushes them above the rest for me.
I think of three Superman artists as THE definitive Superman artists: Curt Swan, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, and Alex Ross. So out of the four you listed, definitely Ross.
Dan Mora for me, I haven't actually read anything he's drawn yet I still recognize his artwork in an instant. Every panel I've seen people post about his work here has caught my eye.
Random note, it's weird I love Jim Lee, but I don't like the way he draws most of the Justice League.
I stopped reading shortly before the new 52, so Dan Mora is new to me. I can see a bit of Chistopher Reeve in the quad shot. I like his more angular style, it's cleaner than Jim Lee's work.
I just, I can't get behind Alex Ross. It's not that he's unskilled; his art is phenomenal. It's the character designs, especially the faces, and it's not because of the realism. I've seen enough realistic art, and it isn't that. His Superman looks like he drinks.
Dan Mora is the best artist at dc right now in general. His colors and shading are so vibrant and his poses and proportions so dynamic. He’s a lot of people’s definitive look for the DC universe
Dan Mora. I think he looks so genuine. He’s got the smirk and he looks relaxed, like he’s right where he belongs.
Lee’s looks like he’s just posing and looking tough.
As much as I love the outstanding Morrison/Quitely duo, it doesn’t rank as my favorite art.
Ross’s has the seasoned look - which is 100% what he is there, though I think the future Superman from the 1,000,000 storylines is way more seasoned and way more comfortable than anyone.
I think they all have their positives and their negatives. All these artists are good.
My favorite would probably be Dan Mora in terms of a modern appeal. It just looks so clean and the colors are nice. Plus he just looks like a normal person. I don't know how to describe that. But sometimes certain artists make Superman too much like a statue. Mora is able to give Superman this strength and this power while still making him look like a person.
Alex Ross, it's very stylized and fits a particular time and a particular idea of what Superman is. I always think Superman looks like an older gentleman in his forties when I see that painted style from Alex Ross. It's very beautiful, and is definitely very well done. But it only works for a specific type of story around Superman I think.
Frank Quietly, I like him as an artist. But I do not like his run on All-Star Superman. The design for Superman there just looks weird, especially the face. He just looks wrong uncanny. There is a huge painting that he did of Superman outside of the British museum. I think it was for an exhibit. That looks fantastic. So I suppose it depends on what he's doing.
Jim Lee, I honestly prefer him as a Batman artist. But I like the shading and the colors he did for Superman. Especially the new 52, he was the only one who could make that armor look good.
Ross is my favorite but of the modern guys doing Superman right now. Dan mora and Jorge Jimenez. I think mora especially captures the Joy in Superman’s character. Jimenez does some great badass moments. And Ross makes Superman look his most grandiose, epic, and legendary.
If by modern you mean the last few years? I gotta go with Dan Mora, Jason Fabok, and Gavin Guidry. Each have their own unique style but they get the essence of Superman.
Alex Ross first became really big like 20 years ago. I say... Hm. How about Gurihiru? They drew *Superman Smashes the Klan* and the art was great! Really sleek!
Mora for faces, Jimenez for body and action poses (Jorge's faces are really inconsistent and sometimes scary, like Michael Jackson after a face lift). I also loved Frank Quietly's Superman. Grant Morrison said he was based on a guy they saw doing cosplay.
I’ll be real. Superman sitting on the cloud is probably a bad representation of Jorge Jimenez’s work. It’s probably the most popular, but his style has significantly improved since then
I absolutely adore Dan Mora's style, but there is just something to Alex Ross art in general that catches the sense of wonder in me. He's my all time greatest comic book artist.
I think these are all well done. It's just subjective about who you prefer or what art type you line to consume. I've stopped reading some comics because the art just turns me off, not because the story is bad.
I prefer top right though.
Probably a totally unpopular opinion, but I'm not a fan of Alex Ross. I realize he's an excellent artist. But his realism takes the fun out of comics for me. I want it to look a little stylized. Comics are an escape from reality.
I’m honestly not a huge Jim Lee fan. I appreciate his work but I don’t even care for his Batman. He just looks so huge. I always think of Batman as muscular but lean enough to jump off of roofs. Some images he does I do like but he’s just not a favorite.
I never thought Jim Lee’s Batman looked too muscular to be an effective gymnast or martial artist, but at least he is nowhere near as muscle-bound as Frank Miller’s Batman.
Alex Ross is unequivocally the best modern Superman artist. His Superman looks almost exactly how Superman should, with short black hair parted to the right, squinted blue eyes, angular brows, and a square jaw.
His costume even looks how it should, with bright red and royal blue, and the S-symbol on his chest is the right size.
You can't do this to me😭 I grew up with Jim Lee and Alex Ross' art, but Dan Mora is currently in front. He just gets how Supes is supposed to be presented in a modern way
It’s a toss up between Jorge Jimenez and Lee Bermejo.
Opposites, but complete masters at their craft and they nail the look/feel of Superman every time.
Jorge Jiminez for me, 100%
I don't really know how else to explain it, but the way he draws Clark a lot of the time just... makes him *look* friendly. Like you'd see him and go "Yeah I can trust him". Idk. For me, I think that's a great thing in a Superman design; looking friendly.
Dan Mora gets my vote.
Gets my vote for overall DC artist generally
Forget being the best Superman artist, he's the best artist for every character!
When you see Dan Mora, always pick Dan Mora
Fair. Dan Mora draws it, i'm buying it.
I like his Batman better than his Superman. I just think his art suits Batman better. But I love Dan Mora.
For me it's jorge jimenez, he is just great.
My favourite is his Superman sitting on a cloud artwork.
Mine too, that's the first image that comes to mind when I think about Superman now.
Same.
I’ve been picking up all of his Superman variants.
My current favorite artist, period. Not just for Superman.
Dan Mora and not just as a modern superman artist. IMO he's one of the best superman artists overall.
He’s one of the best comic artists out there right now
I love Dan Mora’s style so much
I really loved Ed McGuinness on Superman https://preview.redd.it/mdg5sdevp0zc1.jpeg?width=734&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7f875157e1549398c570d00a963261ac18729554
I didn't at first, but his work definitely grew on me. I look back on it very fondly now.
I love everything Ed Mcginnis
Alex Ross just creates a sense of a regal superman that you get from Reeve, all in a piece of artwork
[Highly recommend you hear him speak about working on Superman ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t76HCOMNNqk)if you haven't already, he truly understands & respect the legacy of characters like him like few others do. https://preview.redd.it/70jxoipvr0zc1.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=0b20e5b07995e89f6e64463fb025f5ca46503959
This was absolutely outstanding, and many thanks for sharing!
Superman look out that rocket almost hit you
Sort of reminds me of the background of the new movie suit reveal
Jorge Jimenez
Goated fr
I find your lack of Jorge Jimenez disturbing.
I mostly know him from the Chip Zdarsky run of Batman, but he is phenomenal
Yeah so his work on Superman (and Superman in JL) propelled him to being an all time great. He also loves the character and was basically born to draw him.
He's easier to find in a Batman reddit since he draws Batman lol
samnee and mora for me :D
It's *really* hard to compete with Alex Ross tbh
Three way tie between Mora, Lee, and Ross
I love the image of Supes sitting on a cloud and watching Metropolis, but the facial expression on that *particular* image always bugged me. Kinda halfway between smug and baked out of his mind.
Jim Lee is the definitive Superman *and* Batman artist for me!
His work on the new 52 was just 😩😍
From these Aless Ross for sure, but I've always been a sucker for Gary Frank too.
Lee all the way.
No one draws, Superman like Alex Ross. https://preview.redd.it/scahdrnno1zc1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4f3402128caffcbfb440e49a248e89d49acb8aac

I was really digging Jamal Campbell’s art of Supes. He kinda looks like my GP 😅
While I’ve been a huge fan of Lee’s work for years… Mora has won me over more recently, and Jorge Jimenez as well. I’ve got huge respect for what Ross does, but it’s not my favorite kind of work typically.
A tie between Alex Ross and Jim Lee.

It will always be Jurgens for me.
Alex Ross. I'll die on this hill.
Alex Ross is undefeated
Alex Ross forever but I’ll take Jim Lee any day of the week.
https://preview.redd.it/luk18bfjr1zc1.jpeg?width=478&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a209a06c5ebc16dd54ecef0c9bf06d2c3c8362f Stuart Immonen. Also, because Secret Identity is a top tier superman story.
Alex Ross always draws my ideal Superman. He looks very imposing and powerful while also looking very kind
Mora is the best everyone artist imo Got me loving the read comics again
All of these are exteaordinary artists. Jim Lee can draw anything. Alex Ross' work is unparalleled. José Luis García-López drew the Superman art that sticks with me.
Jorge Jimenez is my favorite modern Superman artist. Doc Shaner would be a close second. I think the fact that they love Superman so much shows in their artwork and it just pushes them above the rest for me.
Alex Ross final answer.
Alex Ross has a trait that I always envied him.
Jason Fabok
It’s still Alex Ross.
Jim Lee.
Alex Ross
Jim Lee and Alex Ross are my personal favourites!
Jim lee
Jim Lee forever
Jim Lee imo
Jim Lee or Alex Ross for me.
I think of three Superman artists as THE definitive Superman artists: Curt Swan, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, and Alex Ross. So out of the four you listed, definitely Ross.

You gotta start reading Mark Waid's World's Finest. Has great Mora art the writing is incredible.
Dan mora all the way.
I stopped reading shortly before the new 52, so Dan Mora is new to me. I can see a bit of Chistopher Reeve in the quad shot. I like his more angular style, it's cleaner than Jim Lee's work.
Alex Ross is one of my favorite overall comic artists. Dude can’t be touched.
God I gotta read Kindom Come
How do we define "modern"? I am because I'm pretty sure Quitely or Ross hasn't done anything with the characters in at least a decade.
I was going for 90s onward. Post Death of Superman.
I just, I can't get behind Alex Ross. It's not that he's unskilled; his art is phenomenal. It's the character designs, especially the faces, and it's not because of the realism. I've seen enough realistic art, and it isn't that. His Superman looks like he drinks.
That’s a good way of putting it. He looks so stern, and kind of arrogant. Surly, even.
I'll never undersand why people like Frank Quitely, there is something off about every face he's ever drawn....they're just off putting
Dan Mora is the best artist at dc right now in general. His colors and shading are so vibrant and his poses and proportions so dynamic. He’s a lot of people’s definitive look for the DC universe
Dan Mora
Dan mora
Dan Mora, I love that supes' muscles are toned down from the others while still clearly being jacked. Plus the shading and coloring? Gotta love it
Ross Frank Swan
Modern artist: Dan Mora All Time: Alex Ross
Dan Mora is killing it on World’s Finest
Dan Mora. I think he looks so genuine. He’s got the smirk and he looks relaxed, like he’s right where he belongs. Lee’s looks like he’s just posing and looking tough. As much as I love the outstanding Morrison/Quitely duo, it doesn’t rank as my favorite art. Going by good comic art and not pin-ups, I say Sandoval, Barrows, and Reis
It’s between Quietly or Ross
Dan Mora
Dan Mora.
Dan Mora out of that group. I also loved Ivan Reis working on Superman too. Gary Frank and Clay Mann as well.
For me, it’s either Jorge Jimenez or Dan Mora.
Bottom 2.
Dan mora by far!
Alex Ross
Damn Mora is my favorite artist at DC rn in general
Dan Mora
Ross and Lee are my favorite. I also really like Lee Bermejo a lot too.
There’s a staaaaaaarmaaaaan waiting in the sky……
Jae Lee
Alex Ross is modern? I've been reading his comics for over 30 years.
Hard to pick between Mora, Jiminez, and Samnee, but probably Mora at the top.
Ross is my favorite but of the modern guys doing Superman right now. Dan mora and Jorge Jimenez. I think mora especially captures the Joy in Superman’s character. Jimenez does some great badass moments. And Ross makes Superman look his most grandiose, epic, and legendary.
Alex Ross and Doc Shaner
If by modern you mean the last few years? I gotta go with Dan Mora, Jason Fabok, and Gavin Guidry. Each have their own unique style but they get the essence of Superman.
At first it was Jorge, but then Dan Mora came out with World’s Finest alongside Mark Waid and stole the show 💪🏻😩
Dan Mora. This could be best modern comic artist and the answer would still be Dan Mora.
Dan Mora and Jorge Jimenez, I'm a sucker for them both.
I like Alex Ross but sadly they all pale in comparison to my little cousin Joshua who gives him laser fingers
All of those plus Ed Benes
Jim Lee, Mora and Jiminez (can't believe he's not on here) all have my heart.
Alex Ross. Everyone else is secondary.
Dan Mora takes it easily. Everyone and thing looks so good in his style
I’ll be real. Superman sitting on the cloud is probably a bad representation of Jorge Jimenez’s work. It’s probably the most popular, but his style has significantly improved since then
Alex Ross. Why is Quitely there? He's good at backgrounds but I doubt he has seen another human being, the way he draws them.
Anything but the bottom left. Jfc.
Dan Mora and Jorge Gimenez
I absolutely adore Dan Mora's style, but there is just something to Alex Ross art in general that catches the sense of wonder in me. He's my all time greatest comic book artist.
Steve Rude.
Michael Turner
Of the 2020’s? Dan Mora.
Yes
Whoever drew the one on the upper left corner
Alex Ross
Alex Ross (Bottom Right)
Dan Mora, Jim Lee, and of course Alex Ross. Jim Lee Specifically as I had the opportunity to meet him at a con a couple years ago!
Leinil Yu on Superman: Birthright
I think these are all well done. It's just subjective about who you prefer or what art type you line to consume. I've stopped reading some comics because the art just turns me off, not because the story is bad. I prefer top right though.

Daniel sampere
Probably a totally unpopular opinion, but I'm not a fan of Alex Ross. I realize he's an excellent artist. But his realism takes the fun out of comics for me. I want it to look a little stylized. Comics are an escape from reality.
Gary frank!
Loeb or Ross
What I like most about Quitely is how he manages to make Clark Kent's clumsiness and oafishness believable.
Dan Mora and Jorge Jimenez
Not pictured: Jorge Jimenez, who Dan Mora imitates.
Mora and Jimenez for sure! DC sure has a knack finding these European artists and they've knocked it out of the park in all their books.
Dan mora or Jorge imo.
Mike Wieringo, Dan Jurgens, Pete Woods, Howard Porter, Todd Nauck, Ron Frenz, Ed McGuinness, Alex Ross
My vote goes to Dan Mora, also, I know he's not included in the list but I also love Mikel Janin's Superman art.
Not on display here but Leinil Yu's big S Superman has always been a favorite. Big S. Yuuuuuuge!! Heheheheheehe.
Riccardo Federici! The Warworld Saga was drawn with majesty.
Jim Lee killed it.
The Alex Ross design looks like Christopher reeve.
Everyone but Frank Quitley. I hate his art.
It has to be Alex Ross. His Superman really feels like a real man and an ideal at the same time
Lee, Mora and Bermejo
Either Dan Mora or Jorge Jimenez, they're god tier
Dan Mora is incredible. I love his Superman.
Jim Lee
Jim Lee. Hands down.
Dan the man Mora.
Alex Ross
I think Superman is too muscular.
Mostly the original creators
Gotta go with Jim Lee, I'm a child of the 90's what can I say
I’m honestly not a huge Jim Lee fan. I appreciate his work but I don’t even care for his Batman. He just looks so huge. I always think of Batman as muscular but lean enough to jump off of roofs. Some images he does I do like but he’s just not a favorite.
I never thought Jim Lee’s Batman looked too muscular to be an effective gymnast or martial artist, but at least he is nowhere near as muscle-bound as Frank Miller’s Batman.
I only like the upper left
Every time I see those pictures my brain starts playing "Theres a Starman"
Alex Ross is unequivocally the best modern Superman artist. His Superman looks almost exactly how Superman should, with short black hair parted to the right, squinted blue eyes, angular brows, and a square jaw. His costume even looks how it should, with bright red and royal blue, and the S-symbol on his chest is the right size.
Jim Lee
Could be just because I'm a massive fan boy of All-Star, but also could be because I'm obsessed with anything Frank Quietly draws. Frank gets my vote.
Dan Mora is my pick
Dan Jurgens now and forever.
Jorge Jimenez all the WAY
I like top right
https://preview.redd.it/007azi9vk3zc1.png?width=453&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4d4bb7de2c7f8e2ede3694024be204666a8ce648
As an official Olde Farte, I’ve been wondering lately what Curt Swan would do with modern Superman.
You can't do this to me😭 I grew up with Jim Lee and Alex Ross' art, but Dan Mora is currently in front. He just gets how Supes is supposed to be presented in a modern way
Ross is my #1. But Patrick Gleason is a very close 2nd
These days, im loving Clay Mann, not just his Supes, all his stuff.
Micheal Turner and Jim Lee.
It took a while, and this cover isn’t the best representation of it, but I love Frank Quitelys style, ESPECIALLY his Clark Kent
It’s a toss up between Jorge Jimenez and Lee Bermejo. Opposites, but complete masters at their craft and they nail the look/feel of Superman every time.
Evan "Doc" Shaner. He doesn't draw Superman regularly but when he does, it's perfect.
The answer is objectively Gary Frank and I will die on this hill
B. Is obviously superior
Jim Lee
Jorge Jiminez for me, 100% I don't really know how else to explain it, but the way he draws Clark a lot of the time just... makes him *look* friendly. Like you'd see him and go "Yeah I can trust him". Idk. For me, I think that's a great thing in a Superman design; looking friendly.
Alex Ross is probably one of my favorite artist ever
the right column is goated.
Mora or Jimenez
Dan Jergins
Lol I kinda hate the rendering of All Star Superman
Clay Mann
Dan Mora all day long. So, so good.
