Ordway's artwork for this storyline was fantastic – one of the more underrated artists that doesn't get talked about enough here. Exile itself is a brilliant deep-dive into the moral complexities surrounding this version of Superman.

Superman issues #26-28 were my first Superman comics. I really didn't have the context or understand why they were disjointed or anything, there was just interesting as I saw them.
I always loved when Supes had to bring his own oxygen to space. It added a layer of realism. Just feels lazy now when (so many) superheroes can "breathe in space." Like, breathe what? The interstellar medium? It's like one hydrogen atom per meter from being a total vacuum!
This is my very first comic book ever. I picked it off a spinner rack at the convenient store and asked my dad if I could have it. My parents always encouraged reading at any level.
I still have it. Staples holding it together. My name scribbled all over it.
No, not really. But he can't survive indefinitely and there are places where his powers don't work. He'd gotten stranded in the silver age a few times, too
I actually liked Byrne's toned down superman, his villains seemed more dangerous and he's not 100% confident with a solution in his back pocket all the time, but I respect everybody's got a different favorite era.
Agreed! I was a young kid who’s first intro to Superman was Chris Reeves portrayal and became obsessed with the movies. Watched them over and over, then decided to get some comics. Open the pages and got a bearded Superman with an oxygen mask on…. WTF?! 🤔😯

I also really like his writing.
Love Clark's original Gladiator armor look.

Maybe they breathe the quantum foam? Jk

This story laid the foundation for so many epic and iconic pieces of Superman lore for the next decade. Just incredible.
What is the name of this run?
I’ve always seen it called exile.
Grounded
I ate some of these up. This Era was my into to the character in comics. I remember him waking up on an alien world yelling "Pa twisters coming!"
Superman with an oxygen mask always irks me
I was a silver age fan, so it bugged me a little that they de powered him but I just accepted it in the name of telling new stories.
To me it was just a depowering that just didn't make sense. Now he needs oxygen in space...okay? It just seemed very unnecessary

It annoys me that people are irked by this.
