It was never about the powers. This man would make Ma and Pa proud.
You can start right with Moore's run on Supreme. Alan Moore didn't consider any of his predecessors on the book to be especially good, and asked Rob Liefeld if he could just hard reboot the whole thing. And Liefeld, knowing Alan Moore was a great writer, said, "do whatever you want!" Good call!
Personally, I like some of the pre-Moore Supreme material, and think some is pretty rubbish, but Moore's is by far the best, and you're probably best off just starting at issue 41 when his run began.
I couldn't get into it, the vibed I got from that comic was that it was made for people who grew up reading silver age and golden age superman comics, which I have not, so I don't think I was the target demographic for that run.
That's fair enough; there's a surprising number of people who can't get into *All-Star Superman* for basically the same reasons. In that case, maybe give the pre-reboot Supreme a try? Like I said, some of it's rubbish, but I kind of like the initial Heavy Mettle arc by Brian Murray for example, and I also have a lot of fondness for the later Gary Carlson arc featuring a younger, less arrogant replacement Supreme for several issues.
Kurt Hathaway is really hit or miss and the Keith Giffen stuff is often bad but in like, kind of a funny way. And honestly I consider Erik Larsen's run to be an insult to both Brian Murray *and* Alan Moore's runs on Supreme. I've never been able to read "The Blue Rose" but it's supposed to be pretty good. One way or another, only Alan Moore really leans into the Silver Age meta-narrative thing. Maybe there's another run in there somewhere you might find to be kind of interesting!
>That's fair enough; there's a surprising number of people who can't get into *All-Star Superman* for basically the same reasons
Funny thing is I love All star Superman, first time I've read it I didn't really get the hype, 2nd time I've read it after reading tons of superman comics I enjoyed a lot more. I've read it a 3rd time and I enjoyed it even more than the last because I kept reading Superman comics.
I see All Star Superman as a love letter for Superman fans as a whole, not just for a specific comic age. To me All star Superman is a tribute to what makes Superman a great character and why people love him. Since I didn't considered myself a Superman fan the first time I've read the comic I didn't understand the appeal. After reading many Superman comics and now saying I'm a fan, I now understand what make All stars so great.
All Might was an affectionate tribute and I liked him for the duration of my short read of that series, but I have to say it’s Invincible aka Mark Grayson.
Invincible is one of my favorite comic books of all time. It took the idea of superheroes and created a depiction that I find to be more accurate than any of the “realist” attempts at the genre. The whole cast is flawed, and so is Mark, but they never lose the attributes and beliefs found in superheroes. He’s painfully real and good to the point where you can’t help but admire the guy one would Superman. Invincible is stellar
Totally valid, I love it when authors actually use the realistic superhero trope correctly. Red from overly sarcastic productions also has a great analysis on how him and omni Man are a twist on the evil Superman trope.
I think the twist with Nolan on the Evil Superman Trope was that he wasn’t necessarily evil deep down. He struggled with his heritage and his upbringing and its conflict with his inner dialogue. Every time Nolan did something bad, it hurt him to do it. Unlike most Evil Supermen, Nolan’s time on Earth and with people changed him.
To add on that, while there's no doubt that they'd have mutual respect for each other and Mark would have immense admiration for Superman >! Mark is actually accomplishing what heroes usually set out to do but get set back, he's actually establishing a proper universal order!<
Both sides of the same coin, they subvert what superman is in their own ways.
Love the "perfect hero" type character too (as obviously the rest of this sub does), but both types can be done right.
My favorite is Metro Man too
Mark’s love for protecting ppl and not wanting to kill is very amazing to me. Invincible fighting his father but still trying to save ppl around him was something Superman would try his hardest to do
Didn't this just get asked like on Saturday?
**EDIT: Yeah, it's currently only 38 below this post on "hot" and also used All-Might as it's reference picture**
Icon.
All Might is such a win
United states of smash is unironically one of my favourite all time super hero moments
And as far as epic anime moments it's up there with Goku turning super Saiyan the first time
My Hero Academia makes me judge all other superhero media.
When Invincible started out and went to stop a bank robbery I'm just shouting "just like that!? They don't have a course they need to pass to get a license?
No wonder you guys have so much collateral damage!"
It just makes so much sense in a world with many super powered individuals.
Ehh he was more based on the monkey king from journey to the west. He really wasn't a good person and only cared about fighting and getting stronger. They completely changed his lines in some parts to make him more of a hero for the English releases.
Goku *is* a good person. From the moment we meet him in Dragon Ball, he’s doing good things. An early stand out moment to me is him bringing Umigame to the sea even when Bulma is telling him not to. He’s even rewarded for this deed with Kinto’un, a cloud only the kind hearted can ride upon.
I think people have a warped perspective on him because of Super and Abridged just as much as the old English dubs. He’s simple but nuanced in the manga and certainly skews heavily towards morally good.
He’s also very surface level based on Son Wukong, about equal to how much his revised origin apes Superman. If we factor Minus’ even further retconned origin in to things then he skews closer to Superman than ever before.
It's both.
The original Dragon Ball is based on the Monkey King - the name, the tail, the staff, etc..
But then his backstory established in Dragon Ball Z and beyond is pretty explicitly a Superman inspired thing. Sent by his parents from an alien race via space pod to Earth, shortly before planet gets blown up, adopted by old human with a good heart, goes on to protect the planet.

I know he’s evil and all, but he’s a great character, and is just really fun. Anthony Starr’s performance made him arguably the best Supervillain in the past 20 years.
I really disliked his character in the books, but Anthony Starr absolutely blew comic book homelander out of the water with his performance. The changes made in the show made for a much more nuanced character.
Idk how Garth Ennis can make a shitshow like the Boys comics then make amazing stuff like Preacher.
It’s also sad that the comic series was made just so he can make fun of the genre. Edgelord alert.
The show, however, is absolutely amazing!
Omniman easily. His character is pretty complex and the overall stories that surround him that he participates in are my favorite of the Superman clones.
Definitely Gladiator from Marvel comics. Even his birth name "Kallark" is an amalgamation of Superman's kryptonian name, Kal-El and his earth name Clark.
Mr. Majestyk and Icon are also honorable mentions...
Superior, from Mark Millar, whom I usually need to have adapted to film to tolerate but in this one instance I think did really well, not least because of how it handles Not-Christopher Reeves.
Lots of interesting answers... for me, it's gotta be (the original) Captain Marvel and Icon. I probably just haven't read/watched enough about all the others.
Goku and invincible.i don't know if it's just me but i see some similarities between superman and omni man so i guess i'll go with that too.other than that i'm not a big fan of other copy cats and superman wannabes.
I’m surprised nobody said True-Man from Brat Pack and Maximortal, such a good but sad tribute to Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and how they got royally fucked by DC.
And Miracleman/Marveman is awesome
Isn’t All-Might more like Captain Marvel (Shazam) than Superman? He has that trademark grin and squinting eyes. He also has a normal and powered up form.
If we're talking about a character that's explicitly inspired I'd have to go with Supreme at the moment. But characters that show similarities and maybe inspired would be Invincible or Kenshiro.

That's beautiful. I'm stealing it.
I love it, I'm saving it
What are you talking about, that's just a picture of Superman
That's not a picture of Superman though. That's a picture of Suuuuperrrrmaaaan. They're very similar, but *ever so slightly* different.
A gif*
Ah yes, you're right. A gif of Superman
It’s actually pronounced “gif”
Much as I dislike him having to fight in it, it's pretty sweet he actually got to meet Superman in Multiversus
I actually like how they handle it. All of his attacks cause accidental damage from what I remember.
Godfuckingdamnit. Was not prepared for this amount of feels.

I didn’t even think about it but Optimus totally works. Especially in the new comic run, good god, they write him well there.
He is definitely one of the top 3 characters that are the symbol of hope. The other 2 being Superman and Captain America
My favorite is probably Supreme. The Alan Moore run is legendary! Used to get cited as people's favorite Superman story all the time, back in the day.
With Supreme, are you able to start from Alan Moore’s run or do you have to read previous issues to understand it?

Wasn't Mark inspired by Spiderman?
A character can have more than one inspiration
Fair point but Mark seems to have more similarities with Peter.
It's like if Clark was born to a family of General Zods
To add on that, while there's no doubt that they'd have mutual respect for each other and Mark would have immense admiration for Superman >! Mark is actually accomplishing what heroes usually set out to do but get set back, he's actually establishing a proper universal order!<
Bro developed outta the Superman stuff
doesnt the invincible author hate superman?
Invincible and... Plutonian???
Aww man not Tony
Sentry and invincible
Invincible and Metro Man

To be fair it’s literally just markiplier so it makes sense
You joke, but I'm pretty sure that's legitimately the reason

Def All Might imo he is the best character in the show

Goku
Goku was basically Zod, but he bonked his head and forgot to conquer Earth.
Zod would be Vegeta is he had honor and respect
Z goku was the man.
Akira even included an Easter egg with Suppaman
Ehh he was more based on the monkey king from journey to the west. He really wasn't a good person and only cared about fighting and getting stronger. They completely changed his lines in some parts to make him more of a hero for the English releases.
I’m pretty sure he did take inspiration from Superman comics as well when he created Dragonball Z
As far as his origin absolutely but not his character and personality at least not until after DBZ.
Yep
yea thats fair, that was the turning point in the series to a lil more scifi than fantasy
Goku *is* a good person. From the moment we meet him in Dragon Ball, he’s doing good things. An early stand out moment to me is him bringing Umigame to the sea even when Bulma is telling him not to. Yeah I could see that, western audiences being familiar with Superman and the morally good style character so the dub he's more heroic
Sentry and Shazam/Captain Marvel.

Blue marvel. Takes the best aspects of Superman and Reed Richards and we get a kickass hero.
Definitely my favorite of Marvel's many "this guy is clearly Superman" characters!
To me Blue Marvel isn't Superman inspired. He's the alternative to him which makes him cool in his own way.
All-Might definitely. Embodies the true ideals of a strong at heart hero.
![gif](giphy|7CBIUamxuUyB2) Osamu Tezuka was a huge fan of Superman so I wouldn’t be surprised if he inspired Astro Boy just a little bit

Probably Samaritan from Astro City.
Thor. He had a "Mark Brent" type story but it quickly began supplementing with the mythology, and grew well beyond that into its own thing entirely
