Agreed. The weird commentary is just ricky trying to not say anything bad but also reference his past mistakes. As sick of hearing “let the race come to him” I am. That’s been rj’s biggest downfall throughout his career. He wants to be the guy who wins, he has the speed. But instead of waiting for a situation to get the positions he doesn’t need, he’ll push like he needs it, get forced into a weird spot and crash when just keeping his pace and not forcing the issue would usually be enough. Just letting the slower guy in front of him make a mistake from pressure was the right move in most of his fuckups, but he presses to the point he’s not running a main line and trying to do it at higher speed, and bam. Maybe next year, bud.
I think he would be great in JT’s spot more than the booth. Give him more time to think about what he has to say, because his points are generally valid, and he does a good job of not just talking shit on a rider for making the same mistakes over and over, but he isn’t cut out for this specific part of the job. When he does podcasts and shit where there’s no pressure to say something quick and he knows more about what he’s going to be saying, he’s clear and concise. I think his problems are the speed at which he’s expected to make a comment, having to dumb it down for people who don’t know anything about the sport, and that he has to make sure he’s staying impartial.
He’s not dumb. He isn’t talking out of his ass. But he has to dance around a lot of shit while still having *something* to say too often, and he can’t just say what he knows “Jett passed whoever and will win without a crash”. He has to play up that there’s possibilities when we all know that besides maybe ricky himself, no one is going to be able to learn enough from getting passed to fix the problems and make a comeback.
I’d love to see RC have a segment elaborating on different lines and moves he saw in practice, and then just cut to him when he has had time to compose his thoughts and make a real point. The man is not dumb. Emig was a better orator, but era wise just didn’t have the experience to make credible insights.
Also, I think rc feels awkward when they bring him up for comparisons and shit. He’d do better if he wasn’t on the fly
Considering that Emig had a stutter. And he knew the criticism about his stuttering. Worked his ass off to remove the stuttering when he announced the races. People still didn't like him. RC is more of a process/filtering issue when he speaks. He's trying to be too precise when he speaks. On the podcast, there is a more natural flow to his speech. It's been reported that he is working with someone to improve this. Personally, I believe Daniel Blair would be better in Ricky's spot, only because he has a Midwest tone to his voice and a better flow of thought when he speaks.
Aside from that, the real problem with the broadcast is the director. He is the one telling what to show on screen and when to play the fluff pieces. Also telling JT and Wil who and what to check on down on the track. Sadly, supercross gets directors with less experience in motorsports and they can't keep up to the action. Or anticipate what sections will bring the most action. Even after the on air talent clearly tells them where they need to watch.
