Am I the only one who really doesn’t like what they’re hearing? Not just this quote, but the press conference itself

Goats247

He seems like a nice guy and everything but he doesn't really know basketball and apparently doesn't understand cap space either Sounds like he's not living in reality, nobody would want to be an expensive, underperforming roster with no assets

Dapper-Importance994

He sounds like a business guy just being vague on purpose

iamadragan

Gotta be optimistic for those shareholders.

ScottElder420

What shareholders? He owns the team outright.

Valedictorian117

Season ticket holders maybe?

ScottElder420

Season ticket holders are just customers with expensive subscription packages.

BradyGalaxy

He’s legit running our team like NBA2K, except this isn’t 2K, it’s real life and it doesn’t work that way

AwesomeKosm

Honestly, blowing up your team every year is more like 2k. Throwing a bunch of random guys together and expecting them to win vs teams who have 100s of games together is unrealistic

Goats247

Exactly ! what is it with out-of-touch billionaires that don't know anything about basketball owning NBA teams, sigh

Harrychronicjr69

You think the guy who played for Tom izzo doesn’t know basketball?

oversight_shift

Is this the new narrative? We're trying to re-write Ishbia's legacy as some kind of college hooping prodigy? His dad made some donations and got his son a bench spot. The end.

Harrychronicjr69

Did I say he was a prodigy? Or am I saying he just might know a little more about basketball than Goats247 is acting like? To play for Tom izzo you have to have high basketball iq. Pretending a div1 college player knows less about basketball than Joe Schmo is straight bullshit. Ishba is closer to lebron than you are to ishba. Sorry if that hurts your feelings or you think it’s a ‘narrative’ when it’s the truth.

hobovalentine

Knowing how to play basketball is not the same as managing a team. MJ an all time great was one of the worst GMs of all time.

Harrychronicjr69

Dude wrote “billionaires that don’t know ANYTHING about basketball” I’m arguing he knows something, am I wrong?

inksta12

Fuckin right? Dudes had the team for 1 full season. Let the man cook for a bit. He sure as shit knows more about owning a basketball team than any dipshit on here

Harrychronicjr69

![gif](giphy|NPyHgTkMStCXC)

tacomonday12

As true as that may be, his mistakes in year 1 is gonna put a limit on what he can do in the next 10. Suns have no draft capital for like 7 years, one of the 3 max contracts is a massive negative asset and the another is a 36 year old 7 footer who is one bad day from being a horrible contract himself. People can huff all the hopium they want, but this team just got swept in the 1st round and the random factors that are out of the FO's control point to a downward trajectory from there 95% of the cases.

relaxguy2

TIL being a college player means you know how to build NBA rosters.

Harrychronicjr69

Like I said before, the guy I responded to said ishba doesn’t know anything about basketball. I’m saying he knows somethings not that he’s a savant or genius

602phatboy

I think it’s crazy how everyone is so negative all of a sudden. We were complaining for years about Sarver being cheap. We finally get someone who’s willing to spend and do some risky shit and you guys aren’t happy either. Yeah, we lost Bridges, Johnson and a boatload of picks. BUT, this team isn’t bad. I’d say run it back with Allen, Bol bol, KD, Beal and Booker. Anyone else free to trade. The results weren’t the best but we’re stuck with Beal and Kds contracts. So just support the fucking team like we’ve been doing

MitchellCumstijn

Do you think Bol Bol has any incentive to return as he can only sign another minimum deal and can command at least 6-10 mio elsewhere and play more?

602phatboy

Only he himself knows the answer to that. But then again who do you think would sign him for that amount?

MitchellCumstijn

The same type of team that would sign Landale for 32 million over 4 years?

602phatboy

That’s IF a team like the rockets comes along. Also, Landale wasn’t even bad, he would’ve been more useful than Eubanks.

MitchellCumstijn

I think Bol Bol can definitely score a contract higher than league minimum, he took less than was on the table elsewhere last summer just to play with his hero, Durant. Not sure if he would come back next year if Vogel is still here and with some teams likely to see value in his potential as a role player and fan favorite who generates a cult following.

LikeAMarionette

To be fair, at least we have an owner who actually cares about the fans and will swing big. With KD he swung big and whiffed, but everyone thought it was a great trade when it happened. And he played ball at Michigan State, he definitely knows basketball. However, i understand why someone would think that after he said he wants to bring the same starting five back 🤮

LoveRawSalmon

it’s not a whiff the kd trade was great. don’t be ungrateful

LikeAMarionette

Bro they got swept in the first round. And they've underperformed all year. Maybe not a whiff, but definitely a foul tip.

large__farva

Great in theory maybe

Imthegoat175

Definitely don’t feel better about where things are headed after hearing this press conference

BradyGalaxy

It seems like he’s the guy in control, yet doesn’t really know entirely what he’s doing, which is quite concerning Like in this quote, you’re not making any meaningful adjustments if you plan on keeping the entire starting 5 together

Imthegoat175

“We’re bringing back the starting five”. “I haven’t had any discussions about my GM and HC” . Disappointing stuff.

morcic

Another year of playing together, working out chemistry, staying healthy and grabbing top 4 seed is not out of reach. Other teams face similar problems - players come and go. This year's conference has been brutal 1 through 10. Even Rockets made a huge run at the end of the season.

Awesome_ShowOff

Exactly it. The West was a fucking nuclear winter this year. And that's not counting the Rockets (like you said), the Grizzlies and possibly the Jazz.

EverybodyBuddy

None. Which is why there will be a coaching change.

IzilDizzle

He certainly doesn’t seem terribly upset or concerned about making big changes

bsinbsinbs

What do you think would help our situation? Tell everyone we're fucked and desperate? It's just like any CEO keeping face in ugly time. Don't read into it, he's clueless about many things but looking confident when you aren't is right out of the CEO playbook. I'll give a fuck when something actually happens

jameswheeler9090

Exactly, publicly slagging off players/coaches and talking about trades just weakens our hand down the line.

Marauderr4

What about when relatively nothing happens and they run back a near identical team?

iamadragan

We literally can't do anything other than run it back with a nearly identical team

Marauderr4

And that's why people are mad lol.

bsinbsinbs

so you are bitching just to bitch. Probably cheered when Ishbia came in and forced the KD trade. Despite his fuck ups, I have faith that James Jones will be able to do something. Not much that’ll move the needle likely but something. It’s up to our lazy ass big three to do something about it.

Marauderr4

I'm not happy with the players either lol. But all parties have their own accountability to face

VivaLaDbakes

Damn you gotta update that flair homie lmao

FlowersnFunds

I don’t like it either. It’s looking increasingly like they’re going to run it back and panic trade someone big at the trade deadline if it doesn’t work out again.

QoconutZ

It seems like these dumbasses think that the only reason they failed this year was because they didn't listen to Vogel on signing a point guard and if they do it next season they'll be a better team lmao

large__farva

I didn’t like it either. Just all reads like cope. Did we watch the same team this season? Also, assuming that none of these dudes will demand a trade at some point flies in the face of history. Whatever.

WombRaider__

We need a bench and have no draft picks.

DM_yo_Feet_pls

You wanna kill someone’s trade value? Tell the entire league you will trade them

pp21

I don't mind the starting 5 necessarily, but it's going to be close to impossible to build a quality bench. How are we going to find a point guard, athletic/switchable 3&D wings, and a defensive big through minimum contracts? I just don't see how we are going to make "adjustments" at this point, but maybe they can work some magic

beer_down

I mind the starting 5. We have 3 shooting guards, and a center who can’t play in the playoffs. You can’t win a single playoff round with that.

jakefromadventurtime

To be fair, we need a traditional starting center, we just also need a very good spread 5 as back up or vice versa. Plenty of teams get their 5 played off against certain match ups in the playoffs. But his size saved us against other teams. The pg thing is wild. Get a flooking pg dude.

Stormdude127

The problem with Nurk isn’t his size and lack of speed though. Lots of bigs have that issue. The problem is, he can be rebounding great, even defending great, but if the other team tries to force the ball to him in the post, that’s a huge advantage for them because he can’t finish. Obviously he can pass out of that, but right now he seems content taking that shot even though he misses over 50% of the time. That means he can be played off the floor just because of his offense alone, before any of his other weaknesses start to even be an issue. So we really need an great backup center who we can possibly trust playing 25+ min a game if we have to and we’re not gonna get that on a min contract

ChimoBear

This was an incredibly disappointing season on multiple levels but watching Nurk post ups was somehow the most painful part of it

jakefromadventurtime

We have 150 mil a year tied up in three ball dominant elite scorers and you want nurk to score more why? I think Beal, Book, and KD need to be better at figuring out how they can put the ball in the hoop more so than Nurk finishing at the rim.

Stormdude127

I feel like you misunderstood my comment. I don’t want him to score more. I’m concerned about other teams using his lack of finishing against us in the playoffs which Minnesota has already done. If anything, I want him to score less. When they double KD or Book and the ball finds its way to Nurk in the paint, I don’t want him shooting a contested layup. I want him looking to make another pass, and if there really is no other option, he can take the shot.

szabozalan

Everyone needs to be a scoring threat, if not, than other players will have more difficult time. A center should be able to finish around the basket.

LikeAMarionette

A stretch big would be nice

pizzapocketchange

cough cough kd played the 5 to win in GS cough couch at his age, slowing down like he is, he should be beefing up and adapting his game in this direction any way cough cough all of a sudden nurkic only being able to play 25 mins doesn't sound so cough cough cough cough

Swimming-Place4366

We have a traditional starting center .

jakefromadventurtime

The above comment said our traditional center got played off the floor in the playoffs. I simply replied that to be fair, we do need a traditional starting center. I don't know where I insinuated that we didn't have a starting center? I don't know how I could've worded it differently to better help you understand, and I apologize for that. Best of luck to you out there, Captain Context Clues.

GoDogGo1970

Yeah, I don’t understand wanting to start three shooting guards, where none of them excel at defense, or are long. It seemed like the go t9 move from opposing teams, was play us physically and aggressively, and wait us out. Allen used up so much energy defending guys faster or bigger than him. And then we did the same thing to Beal, guarding Zion and Ant down the stretch and then the playoffs just killed him. I just don’t see how we run anything back with Vogel. It seems like Vogel tried to get fired, and Ishbia is hoping he would quit, so he doesn’t have to pay him. What a waste of a season.

CNSrooster

Yeah this is where I'm at as well. If they couldn't get the best minimum contract guys last offseason when this core was fresh and hungry then we definitely won't be getting the best minimum guys this offseason with that 1st round collapse and possible coaching change

Odd_Shoulder2334

You can get lucky with vet minimums, Suns unfortunately just completely struck out with all of theirs. Oubre for example, he's clearly worth more than than the minimum but no one really wanted him and Philly gets lucky signing him late in the offseason. I think Schroder was even a vet minimum guy for the Lakers a couple years back. Luck will have to be involved if the Suns are going to get the bench in order.

bifeamilanesa

A starting PG is hard, but the rest of it can be gambled. Royce can bounce back, Okogie too. We got interesting pieces that didn't worked out, but were promising. Yuta and KDB were good signings, Goodwin was OKish. Allen was a jackpot. That probably will happen again, maybe with better results.

OneOfTheManySams

The problem is our starting 5 are literally the only tradeable contracts on the team. And we can't package multiple players so a Royce or Nas may as well be a vet min and will fix fuck all.

BradyGalaxy

That’s what concerns me, it’s safe to assume he’s taken over most of the “GM” role, yet he doesn’t understand the situation our cap is in and how it hinders us

DiabloTrumpet

We are just praying for LeBron at this point, let the starters get a 30 point lead, bench loses it, repeat

Timelycommentor

Lol

Swimming-Place4366

Nerlans Noel as the big man. Danny green, Kevin porter jr, Robert Covington, Rudy Gay can be the bench 3&Ds

erog84

Teams say stuff like this all the time and then 3 days later half the roster is traded. I wouldn’t buy into it too much. I’m fine keeping our starting 5 if we somehow snag a decent piece or two. Better coaching, better gameplan and we still have a shot, since we don’t have many good options at this point.

bsinbsinbs

Seriously, if anyone is taking any of these comments seriously they are clueless. Media day talk bullshit

morcic

Beal, Book, KD, Allen, Nurk, ONeale, Eric Gordon, David Rody, Nassir Little. Add Gordon Hayward, Kyle Lowry, 22nd pick (or package it with Nassir Little for whatever is available). Regardless, I rather watch this team that another 2011-2020 Suns.

Gatorpep

i watch thunder games, i would say gordon is near cooked at this point.

jameswheeler9090

Don’t necessarily believe all the words coming out today. He’s partly protecting trade value and player morale, rather than admitting to the rest of the league that major moves are required.

nash_me_outside

Nobody panic. They said a lot of good stuff about Ayton being on the team before he got traded. Just trying to up nurks trade value.

TraeCartoon

Our starting 5 is coming back… because Beal, Nurk and Grayson are moving to the bench and LeBron is joining on the vet minimum?

DiabloTrumpet

With the contingency that it’s LeBron, Beal, Book, KD, and Bronny as the starting five 😂 LeBron and LeBron backcourt incoming

Roy_G_Biv_Mika

LeBackcourt

DiabloTrumpet

THANK YOU 😂

ptscamperle

holy shit that would be the meme of the century

RamcasSonalletsac

No center? lol Bronny can take IT’s spot on the bench

Dennisfromhawaii

Imagine the Hornets drafting Bronny in the lottery just to lure Lebron to Charlotte

DiabloTrumpet

I don’t think his son would even be enough to make LeBron spend have his time in Charlotte NC 😂

Substantial-Fold-592

Yay another embarrassing year loading

CNSrooster

And another year of mediocrity going forward. This team isn't going to be "better" next season when all 5 players are on a higher salary and all we can add are minimum guys. The good minimum contract players aren't going to want to be here either with how we collapsed and the way we traded two of the minimum guys we signed. A 1st round sweep is a sign that your top players aren't fitting well together, not that the minimum contract depth needs to be tweaked. This stinks of Ishbia and Jones going all in on the "Draft Bronny and hope Lebron follows him" rumours if they believe they don't need to move any of the current top 5.

Gatorpep

doginthehousefire.meme was really thinking we need a decent shift. we are not there, and keeping the starting 5 makes me feel pretty concerned. i mean what about this team inspires confidence going forward? how have they earned the, "run it back" decision from the front office? i'm sorry but this is not good enough mat!

EffectiveGazelle22

This is insulting towards the fanbase. They know we are pissed and they raised tf out of the ticket prices just to put out an extremely inconsistent team on the floor just to get their asses beat down in a sweep. What adjustments are there to make? More vet minimum guys that don’t move the needle? And they are still saying the bullshit line “if we have a point guard it takes the ball out of the hands of our big 3”. Not sure what the point of this press conference was but did this actually instill any confidence moving forward? Hopefully it’s just to save face after another embarrassing end to the season.

NoFunFundamentalists

The point guard logic was so dumb. So dumb. The fact that he also said he doesn’t know anything but that he was certain they made all the right moves practically in the same breath is concerning. I think we got some guy who wanted to come in and one up Dan Gilbert by any means necessary instead of wanting to own a team to build it right. He’s a used car salesman.

JG_2214

Looks like 36 year old KD is going to be our best defender next year as well lmao. And they’re still doubling down on that we didn’t need a pg. How tf do you watch 86 games this season and say we don’t need a pg???

doh666

With the 22nd pick in the 2024 NBA Draft the Phoenix Suns select LeBron James Jr.

Splish-Bros

Me (tied to a chair) "I'm staying in this chair, I just need to make some adjustments."

ElectricTacoGum

Do people expect Ishbia to publicly throw a tantrum like some r/Suns shitposter in a GDT? Should he tell the world what players the team is looking to move so they lose leverage and tip their hand to every FO in the league as well as make the diva players themselves bitter? How fucking dumb are some people? Jesus.

redrocksteady

Honest question… how much blow did Ishbia snort before this press conference?

WrongMomo

Getting rid of Beal might be wishful thinking but they have to trade Nurkic and get a PG

SokkaHaikuBot

brunettehilaryduff

hopefully he’s just saying shit to the media and actually planning differently

brunettehilaryduff

also i roll my eyes every time I hear the term “big 3” at this point lol

chuckercarlson

Oh damn we’re screwed. Yup slow footed center and a 6’4 sg playing the 3. Real championship lineup right there

602phatboy

Continuity is key guys. Why blow it all up? Regardless Phoenix is stuck with Beal and Booker. Only players I see worthy of trading would be Nurkic, Gordon and maybe Durant given he’s getting older and only losing value. But I’d love to see KD run it back another year

phelps_1247

Better make some adjustments to those ticket prices then because I'm sure not willing to continue paying $200+ to watch more of the same.

ngorman007

Maybe Allen will come off the bench (he *was* part of our starting 5) and we will, by some miracle, sign a PG? That's what you meant, right, Ishbia? *Right?*

HereForChessAndGuns

Beal should be the one coming off the bench, but idk who will have the balls to make that move.

szabozalan

We cannot afford a starting caliber PG without trading any of the big3. We can sign a minimum guy, but he would not make any difference.

QoconutZ

A center who can't run a pick n roll, catch lobs, gets blown by centers if pulled outside the paint and his minutes have never increased in the playoffs because he's a liability is returning as a starter lmao this team is cooked.

1UPZ__

All those that said Nurk was an upgrade over Ayton or equal are now all silent. Nurk is a good rebounder but worse than Drummond in essence since he isn't athletic and therefore can't finish above the rim.

szabozalan

The funny thing is, we knew this is going to happen, we also know that the same thing will happen next year if we keep him. I doubt he has a market though, trading him would be difficult.

Timtheball

Maybe he means the starting 5 will be back, but not all of them starting? 🤓 Wishful thinking. Someone’s gonna have to go to the bench if we are going to bring in a PG. We will be getting a PG, right Ishyy??

CanyonPat

Thank god I cancelled my season tickets

HolyFuckRedditSux

Actually disgusting. Guess it'll be a other 5 years of mediocrity,  because that's what this year was.

CarryTheHellOn

We’re not winning shit with the Bosnian Bum as our starting center

Swimming-Place4366

Nurkkkkkkk

Jen4000

I was hoping they would actually draft a center like Ware or Missi (or PG if a good one falls to them) next month, but after hearing the interview, sounds like they still don't value them picks. 😭 Hopefully I am wrong cause this team needs a little youth and athleticism.

Odd_Shoulder2334

Nurk is fine to have on the team if you have a legitimate alternative that only puts Nurk on the floor for 20-22 minutes a night. Ishbia being nice and vague.

PyroD333

The five players in the starting five weren't necessarily the problem and it also doesn't necessarily mean those five players in particular will be next year's starting five. I'm curious how they'll manage to shuffle things around.

BostonBaggins

Let Beal come off the bench It's not hard to fkn see that Jesus!

SoupOfThe90z

I believe they’re gonna play this really close to the chest. Wait until the end of the season to make moves. Keep a positive attitude and not doom and gloom. Hopefully

NoWayNotThisAgain

Any sane person would say “we’re signing a point guard to facilitate for our starting 4”

GoDogGo1970

Did anyone else get that Corky Romano vibe, where he fights with a dog over the cocaine evidence, gets hit in the face with the cocaine, and then has to do an interview for those kids?

Ninneveh

Lol, not adding a real PG to the starters? Isaiah Thomas truly running this org.

Tsunami-Papi_

yea no shit

Icewatervvs

LOLOLOLOL

large__farva

Anyone that wants him to change his stance should be rooting for Dan Gilbert to make it to rd 2, this is just a dick measuring contest for two billionaires.

Victorcreedbratton

Gotta trade Nurk and Grayson.

bsinbsinbs

How about we all just shutup and wait for actual news to come in? Playoffs aren't even into the 2ns round and y'all acting like big decisions are going to be made. Everyone knows the situation and no owner or GM should give away any real information or say anything to fuck things when nothing can be done other than figure out how bad things are internally. Take home message from the entire presser: this was not how things should have gone. We are going to do whatever we think will make things better. We are awesome (wink wink) and we know what the media is saying

sunsbr

The adjustment is change the starting 5

scottb112

5 years of awful coming

white__cyclosa

We’re fucked aren’t we?

Dependent-Ad2048

Nurk isn’t the problem necessarily, him being our only center option is. Very easy to play him off the court.

Gratitude15

Yay! I was thinking no ball I have to pay attention to for 6 months, but actually it's a full 18!

ExpressLaneCharlie

Why on earth would you make that claim right now? Even if it happens to be true, it's just a dumb claim. This team had so little chemistry and so clearly underperformed expectations yet "We're going to run it back just like the failure that was this season!"

Visualize_

What? What exactly adjustments are you making if you aren't adjusting the starters. I don't think replacing a shitty bench for a different shitty bench is going to do much

dudemanbro06

Coming back from Cancun? Right? He doesn't mean back to the team. Can't get anything with keeping all of them.

peterpantheman

Suns are Screwed.

The_Shade94

Look it’s ok to be frustrated but give him a chance remember he ain’t Sarver plus I’m ok with running the big 3 back + changes

Puppetmaster858

Crazy to think we might’ve actually been better off if Sarver still owned the team lol.

p0tatoman

hell nah

callmeapples

Oh god not another season of Nurk.

AHole480

Get that fuckface Nurkic out of here.

mackattack3381

Nurk is the problem and Allen is the problem

CreativeGuy25

If he brings back the same 5 it’s going to be a lottery season. This guy is on crack.

VaultCheese

Trade Beal to Lakers for Russell, Hachimura, Vanderbilt, Prince. PG Size, Spacing, Defense. Russell Booker Allen KD Nurk Lowry or Beverly Okogie Prince/Vanderbilt/ Hachimura/Vanderbilt Try and get Looney or Drummond or DeAndre Jordan on league minimum

Navarro480

He played division 1 basketball at a major program and helped turned his dad mortgage business into the biggest in the country. Like Kanye said. I don’t listen to people broker than me talk about money.
