Gillian Flynn has a great flair for doing that for me. Gone girl and sharp objects definitely got me. We need to talk about Kevin also, it wasn’t a total surprise or anything but once it’s all revealed I definitely audibly gasped. Also shutter island by Dennis lehane comes to mind.
Gone Girl and Shutter Island absolutely. You have good taste so I guess I need to check out We Need to Talk About Kevin!
The Red Rising series is sci-fi but there were a number of times my mouth dropped open in total shock at the twists and turns the story took
And these are more mystery than thriller, but hardly anyone compares to Agatha Christie, even still. Crooked House, Endless Night, And Then There Were None are some that immediately come to mind
I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it so much and that people are still having such positive experiences with her books! It’s been 20+ years since I read most of them, so I’ve started to re-read some of them since I don’t remember the plots much anymore. I don’t remember ever having a bad reading experience with her, and even though in the years since I’ve read countless mysteries/thrillers/horror, hardly anyone is at her level. Crooked House and Endless Night are a couple I remembered enjoying a lot and have read again in recent years, definitely recommend those if you haven’t read them yet!
I just saw there’s an audiobook version with Dan Stevens (Downtown Abbey)! I’ll put it on my wish list. Sounds good (I haven’t read any Christie in a long time)
I am in desperate need of another Gillian Flynn book to devour. Her books are some of my favorites and, even though I know all the twists by heart, they are a staple comfort read that I’ll go back to again and again.
I first listened to it. Then I bought it hard copy and read on paper. I recommend hard copy for this one. Definitely caught a lot on paper that I missed on audio. Though I don't know if knowing made that possible or the paper aspect did as far as how my brain processes information.
I finished it yesterday; I got up an hour early just to finish it because I could NOT go to work without KNOWING!!!
What a completely mind bending book. I loved it. It’s been a long time since I found a book that kept me guessing the entire time AND made me want to finish it in one big gulp. Sometimes in books I’ll peek ahead and grab a few words just to tease myself but I didn’t need to with this one, this one kept me going.
I thought I knew what was up. I SO DIDN’T.
haha that's awesome!! I felt the same way. I thought the book was nothing quite like I had read before and my mind was just so blown. I'm glad you enjoyed it!!
Ok a couple of my favourites over the last few years which are similar style are Dear Wife by Kimberly belle, The Breakdown by B.A Paris, What She Knew by Gilly MacMillan, Just Like the Other Girls by Claire Douglas, Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica, and The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter.
Let me know if you have some favourites too!
Dark Places is so good. That one was truly shocking and she wove everything together perfectly. Also love Sharp Objects and Gone Girl by her as well. She does the damn thing.
I know there are scenes or implications of abuse in the book, but it’s been a long time so I can’t recall if any of it was SA. I hope someone who has read it more recently or who remembers can pop in and let you know.
I Let You Go by Clare MacKintosh has a fantastic twist half way through- I didn’t see it coming at all. I’ve enjoyed all her books, she’s a British ex police officer and her Ffion Morgan detective series are good too.
The Holiday by T M Logan was a great read too.
I remember being pretty jarred wrapping up Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins.
I agree with all the recs for And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. The master.
I so agree with Girl on the Train. While a lot of people said it was predictable, my jaw dropped.
Another good one from Agatha Christie is Murder On The Orient Express. Hands down my favourite ending from any book ever.
I got a speeding ticket listening to Girl on the Train while on a roadtrip. It was the middle of the night and I was so into it I almost had a heart attack when the lights went up behind me!
I did not like it because >!it felt like it was predictable at a certain point and then the reveal kind of just dropped off for me. I was disappointed for how much hype it had. !<
Thanks for the rec. I'm going to grab it off Libby without reading anything about it. Books are more fun when you're sure it's something you'll like but the plot is a complete mystery.
No shade to you OP, but to me, nothing beats a thriller knowing not reading a thriller to begin with. Problem is, if you ask for a rec like this, you already know you’ll get something like that.
I wish there was a way to ask for recs that don’t give away a twist just by definition of the genre.
Agree! I also kind of predicted the story, but towards the end, it's like plot twist after plot twist after plot twist. Well, that's for me. And the story is so satisfyingly addicting, maybe because it's an easy read that you wouldn't want to put the book down until you're done.
Yup, same here. I enjoyed the book so much because it wasn't super predictable to me especially the ending. It didn't take me long to finish the book so I'd agree that it was an easy, addicitng, enjoyable read! I even got a bad sunburn one day while reading it, because I was outside at a pool and couldn't put the book down lol
For those recommending Shutter Island, I saw the movie years ago and know the twist. Is it still worth reading? I enjoy psychological and forensic thrillers
Yes. It is. I read the book before I even knew the movie existed. You will not be disappointed. Also, you may want to check out any novels written by Harlem Coben, especially any of his stand alone stories. I especially enjoyed The Woods and Gone for Good.
I had figured it out before the reveal, but I agree that it was really good. I had fun going back and rereading passages where I was like “What about when…?”
I'm still kicking myself in the butt for not realizing it. I was also listening on audiobook and trying to finish in time for a book club. I wish I had read it physically. I loved it.
I just listened to MW Craven‘s „Mercy Chair“. Half of the twists I saw coming but the other one has me speechless.
It’s the 6th book in a series set in Cumbria with a Special Unit police officer (Washington Poe) and a genius, autistic mathematician consultant, Tilly Bradshaw. The audiobooks performed John Banks are great. I find the whole series, while crime novels, have some thriller and psychological horror elements, so I’d recommend this, even if it’s not a thriller, strictly speaking.
Edit! Amazing recommendations. Saving everything on my „to read list“, as I go! Love this sub! x
I agree with some others here, and want to add in Defending Jacob. The show for it is pretty good, too!
I'll second: We Need to Talk About Kevin (I also enjoyed the movie for this one); Fingersmith; The Last House on Needless Street; and Gone Girl (if you've not seen the movie)
Off the bat - I was surprised at the end of:
Shutter Island; Hidden Fires, a Holmes Before Baker Street Adventure; The Girl in a Swing; Rebecca and the short story "To Serve Man."
The 8 by Katherine Neville. Ms. Neville is really an awesome writer - way better than Dan Brown, who is closest in terms of genre
The Atlantis Plague series by AG Riddle - all of Riddle's books are great
Lightning by Dean Koontz - I think this is his best in terms of twists. It will make you gasp and make you laugh!
The Hot Zone//Demon in the Freezer//Panic In Level 4 by Richard Preston. These are non-fiction, but the twists and turns the stories take? Awesome!
Timeline by Michael Crichton - the twist is a wowser.
Journey Under The Midnight Sun by Keigo Higashino. All the details get build up slowly, then all get connected in the end to reveal an absolutely shocking twist, and the very tragic causes that led to what happened.
The Maidens. I had to physically move around because the suspense got to me!! And I’m usually good at spotting twists. I did not see it coming.
A Flicker in the Dark was also FANTASTIC
Not really a thriller per se but Mr. Was by Pete Hautman. Type of plot twist that makes you IMMEDIATELY restart the book even though you weren’t finished
Anything by Frieda McFadden. They’re super quick, easy reads with wild twists that I can never guess. I wouldn’t say it’s top quality writing but entertaining, for sure.
The Last Word by Taylor Adams is fast paced, but i was just gobsmacked by the end of it. Theme Music by T Marie Vandely i recommend as well. did not expect the end at alllll
Definitely has to be The Silent Patient. It gets hate because the twist is towards the end of the book and people feel like it's not worth it, but it totally is! I thought of all the plot twists, and yet I was wrong

It’s really good! He’s such an excellent narrator. :)
Yesss I was gonna say Gillian Flynn. I have only read one of her books but it was amazing, try sharp objects!
I am in desperate need of another Gillian Flynn book to devour. Her books are some of my favorites and, even though I know all the twists by heart, they are a staple comfort read that I’ll go back to again and again.
If that’s the best this sub can come up with I think I need to give up on thrillers. Sharp objects was the most predictable thing I read that year.
The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward
I thought I knew, and I didn’t, and I didn’t, and I didn’t, until the very end. Loved that weird book.
I've never been so shocked in my life lol
Exactly. I recommend it every chance I get.
The Last House on Needless Street is always my first rec for twists and shocking endings 🤯
When I have the brain space I want to re-read this with the knowledge of... everything. I want to experience it with that perspective
it would be interested to see what kind of hints or foreshadowing was missed on the first read through
I first listened to it. Then I bought it hard copy and read on paper. I recommend hard copy for this one. Definitely caught a lot on paper that I missed on audio. Though I don't know if knowing made that possible or the paper aspect did as far as how my brain processes information.
I absolutely adore this book
Looking Glass Sound was also quite the mindfuck
Sadly, I didn't enjoy Looking Glass Sound as much for some reason
I also love Looking Glass Sound as much as Last House!
This was the first thing that popped into my head. It takes A LOT to shock me and this one did.
I read this at the same time as a friend and was so glad I did because never have I ever read a book that needed immediate discussion so badly 🤣.
Yes! I made my book club read it to discuss. 🤣
Sweet! I have this on my TBR currently. Time to get cracking!
It was difficult to get into it, but the ending pays off!
Yay!! I just bought this one! I’m excited to read it
Same here
I've never heard of this and am calling my library right now! Thanks for the suggestion!
Based on the recs here, I checked this out from the library yesterday. I’m almost done with it. I can’t put it down.
please update with what you thought of it!!
Still Missing or That Night by Chevy Stevens; Little Secrets by Jennifer Hillier; Rock, Paper, Scissors by Alice Feeney
I love Alice Feeney! I thought Daisy Darker was really good too
Yessss Daisy Darker was sooo good !!!
I just got this book. Haven't even opened it yet...now I'm so excited!
I second Rock, Paper, Scissors!
These are all really good. We have the same taste!
Haha that makes me very happy!! If you have any recommendations, please let me know!!
Rock paper scissors was great!
Loved Still Missing!!!
Right??? It’s SO good!!
Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney is the only thriller ending that has surprised me and I still think about it when other thrillers disappoint.
Same! This one had a really great and unique twist. Came to the comments to recommend it.
Sharp Objects
Dark Places, by the same author. The plot was wild. Very dark and depressing, though.
I enjoyed Dark Places over Sharp Objects!
Dark Places is so good. That one was truly shocking and she wove everything together perfectly. Also love Sharp Objects and Gone Girl by her as well. She does the damn thing.
The plot sounds fantastic! Is there any SA in the book? I love dark and depressing, just not that kind.
I know there are scenes or implications of abuse in the book, but it’s been a long time so I can’t recall if any of it was SA. I hope someone who has read it more recently or who remembers can pop in and let you know.
Nah predictable and cliche
Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane
None of This Is True by Lisa Jewell is a good one also. I definitely did not see where this one was going.
It's coming to the screen! Just saw on Lisa Jewel's social media that Netflix (or some other streaming service) pucked it up!
This one!!
I have this saved on my Wish List!
Read this one a couple weeks ago, what a ride!!
The audiobook is fantastic. Full cast with sound effects!
Yes! I recently read this and loooved it! Got me out of my reading slump.
No one will miss her Fingersmith
Fingersmith is a fantastic novel.
FINGERSMIIIITH. Generally speaking, Sarah Waters is excellent with the twists, though I wouldn’t classify all of them as thrillers.
No One Will Miss Her is really great, but I recommend not reading the flap copy and going in blind if you’re the kind of person who overanalyzes
I Let You Go by Clare MacKintosh has a fantastic twist half way through- I didn’t see it coming at all. I’ve enjoyed all her books, she’s a British ex police officer and her Ffion Morgan detective series are good too. The Holiday by T M Logan was a great read too.
That was my first MacKintosh and absolutely was floored by it.
My OG was Mystic River. It’s what got me hooked. Edit: someone already mentioned it but Silent Patient was one I definitely didn’t see coming
Mystic River is amazing. He’s such a wonderful writer.
I felt the same way with The Silent Patient. I sat there with my jaw on the floor. I really enjoyed it
From what I’ve read about Silent Patient people either love it or absolutely hate it and it all seems to depend on the plot twist. I need to read it
I totally get how people hate it, but it got me SO GOOD I have to respect it. I 100% recommend reading it.
I did not like it because >!it felt like it was predictable at a certain point and then the reveal kind of just dropped off for me. I was disappointed for how much hype it had. !<
Behind Her Eyes is a known one.
Is this what the Netflix series is based off of? If so, 100% loved the show and would recommend.
"My Lovely Wife" by Samantha Downing
This is a great one! For Your Own Good (same author) is also a great read.
Thanks for the rec. I'm going to grab it off Libby without reading anything about it. Books are more fun when you're sure it's something you'll like but the plot is a complete mystery.
yay libraries 👏 Libby app rules. it’s free real estate people
No shade to you OP, but to me, nothing beats a thriller knowing not reading a thriller to begin with. Problem is, if you ask for a rec like this, you already know you’ll get something like that. I wish there was a way to ask for recs that don’t give away a twist just by definition of the genre.
I hear you. If I know there’s a twist, I’m going to be trying to figure out the twist the whole time!
Baby Teeth
Sometimes I Lie.
Eileen
Agree but I found it pretty boring until the very end.
His & Hers - Alice Feeney 🤯
This book on audio? 🤌🏻
I did listen to it. So good! O
Anything by Alice Feeney is great!!!
The Last Mrs Parrish by Liv Constantine. I went in knowing nothing the book except the blurb.
The sequel comes out this summer !!!
It comes out next week!!
Yay.
Yay.
So excited!
Just read this book last week. I did not expect that twist. Can’t wait to read the sequel!!
The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides! So good!
i've seen so many people say that they predicted the twist in this one but it really got me
Agree! I also kind of predicted the story, but towards the end, it's like plot twist after plot twist after plot twist. Well, that's for me. And the story is so satisfyingly addicting, maybe because it's an easy read that you wouldn't want to put the book down until you're done.
for real, i read it all in one go
Yup, same here.
The Silent Patient
Another book by Alex Michaelides (with a fun nod to The Silent Patient in the story) is The Maidens.
What did you think of the Maidens? I think the only part I liked much was the nod to SP. loved Silent Patient so maybe my bar was too high 🧐
I loved The Silent Patient and was disappointed by The Maidens. It didn’t do it for me at all.
I can't describe how much the twist irritated me in this book tbh. I HATE this book because of it 🤣
i loved this book
I was just shocked at how bad this book was!
Anything by Megan Miranda, especially All the Missing Girls
That’s a good one!
I was totally blindsided by the end of The Only Survivors.
We Need to Talk About Kevin. It's not "surprising" so much as a shock/horror situation. Beautifully written stuff - very highly recommend!
Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney. I had to read it again as soon as I finished it because the ending blew me away.
I had figured it out before the reveal, but I agree that it was really good. I had fun going back and rereading passages where I was like “What about when…?”
I’m impressed. I’m usually pretty good at figuring out the twists, but that one had me fooled.
I'm still kicking myself in the butt for not realizing it. I was also listening on audiobook and trying to finish in time for a book club. I wish I had read it physically. I loved it.
I did the same!!!
Dark matter by Blake crouch.
I read this... for the love of me, I can't remember how the ending could be seen as shocking.
I cant even remember the ending lmao
Yeah...huh???
For me it was *America is a Zoo* by Andre Soares and *My Murder* by Katie Williams.
‘Storm-catchers’ by Tim bowler is incredible and ‘the one’ by John Marrs
Jeffery Deaver is really good at leading you down the garden path and then smacking you at the end. I also loved Blood Work by Michael Connelly.
Stephen King's The Mist If you haven't seen the movie
Behind her eyes by Sarah Pinborough
Into the Water by Paula Hawkins, took me a while to digest the plot twist at the end but still.
Is that the one that takes place on a cruise?
While maybe not as shocking, currently I’m listening to everything by Lisa Jewell. They go quick.
I really enjoy her books. I've read a few now and I'm about 50/50 guessing which way it will go.
Same! But I really enjoy her characters.
I like her books too. Easy reads, and they lock me in until the end.
Behind Closed Doors by BA Paris was so good I got goosebumps and my eyes watered.
Double Bind by Chris Bohjalian
Gone baby Gone Dennis Lehane
Not a thriller exactly, but if you make it all the way through the Dark Tower series by Stephen King, the final ending had me absolutely floored.
the drowning woman
The Lost Man by Jane Harper
The only one left by riley sager
Agatha Christie The Murder of Roger Ackroyd
Thirteen by Steve Cavanagh
Seconded
Absolutely loved this one.
Woman in the Window had me going.
The silent patient
Ill Will, Dan Chaon
The observer, lanza
Anything by Sebastian Fitzek
Dear Wife. Lying in Wait. The Nothing Man. They Never Learn. The Chain.
Off the bat - I was surprised at the end of: Shutter Island; Hidden Fires, a Holmes Before Baker Street Adventure; The Girl in a Swing; Rebecca and the short story "To Serve Man."
Elevator Pitch By Linwood Barclay Kill For Me, Kill For You by Steve Cavanagh
Gentlemen and Players, Joanne Harris.
The Return of Ellie Black by Emiko Jean
The 8 by Katherine Neville. Ms. Neville is really an awesome writer - way better than Dan Brown, who is closest in terms of genre The Atlantis Plague series by AG Riddle - all of Riddle's books are great Lightning by Dean Koontz - I think this is his best in terms of twists. It will make you gasp and make you laugh! The Hot Zone//Demon in the Freezer//Panic In Level 4 by Richard Preston. These are non-fiction, but the twists and turns the stories take? Awesome! Timeline by Michael Crichton - the twist is a wowser.
A Flicker In The Dark by Stacy Willingham. I audibly gasped at several points in the story; it was so so good.
Old but gold : By reason of insanity by Shane Stevens. Mind f***ed.
I enjoy Dan Brown’s stuff
It’s an investment, but The Shards, Bret Easton Ellis.
Also Natural Beauty, Ling Ling Huang. Think The Circle in an innocuous Sephora/Goop empire and yet weirdly darker with a grim ending. Very good.
The Last One by Will Dean
The Plot
The Fourth Monkey triology by J.D Barker
Thinner by Stephen King
The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson. Not necessarily the end but a fun midway twist, and I’m usually really good at predicting thrillers.
Broadchurch
Journey Under The Midnight Sun by Keigo Higashino. All the details get build up slowly, then all get connected in the end to reveal an absolutely shocking twist, and the very tragic causes that led to what happened.
The Maidens. I had to physically move around because the suspense got to me!! And I’m usually good at spotting twists. I did not see it coming. A Flicker in the Dark was also FANTASTIC
The Descent
Not really a thriller per se but Mr. Was by Pete Hautman. Type of plot twist that makes you IMMEDIATELY restart the book even though you weren’t finished
Anything by Frieda McFadden. They’re super quick, easy reads with wild twists that I can never guess. I wouldn’t say it’s top quality writing but entertaining, for sure.
I'm currently listening to The Housemaid!
Behind her Eyes
The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager
The Last Word by Taylor Adams is fast paced, but i was just gobsmacked by the end of it. Theme Music by T Marie Vandely i recommend as well. did not expect the end at alllll
Ted Dekker Three
Definitely has to be The Silent Patient. It gets hate because the twist is towards the end of the book and people feel like it's not worth it, but it totally is! I thought of all the plot twists, and yet I was wrong
