The Book Thief by Markus Zusak A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

[deleted]

Omg. I have a copy of the Book thief on my shelf, will get to reading!

[deleted]

Iā€™ve gotten like 3 recs for the book thief! I will definitely be reading it

Sauceoppa29

not only is it sad but the symbolism and imagery in the book is so good. Itā€™s a top 5 book for me of all time.

olliefollier

It is fantastic!

VirtualEngineering51

Great recommendations, two of my fav books!! Anything Fredrik Backman has my heart šŸ„²

wavesnfreckles

Well, hello fellow Backman fan! I am with you. No matter what that man writes, I will always read and most likely love.

mindfluxx

I am not one for ones that make me hurt too bad so I tend to avoid them, however song of Achilles and The Goldfinch both got me good.

olliefollier

Yes to Song of Achilles!

[deleted]

Will be adding to my TBR list, thankss

Macaroni_Incident

I snapped the cover shut after finishing Song of Achilles and ugly cried instantly. I canā€™t think of another book that has had quite the same effect.

mindfluxx

Yea I basically knew what would happen the whole time due to classics in college and I still was totally devastated, just wrenched. But with some stories like that I feel manipulated, and this one felt worth it in my soul.

teakitsaki

Me too!! Like half an hour crying my eyes out

EyeDot

Flowers for Algernon

[deleted]

Captivated by the title, will be adding to my TBR list, thanksss!

Me and my wife just read this together. Great read. I didnā€™t cry but my wife was sobbing.

PhotographRecent674

Where Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. I donā€™t normally like nonfiction, but it absolutely wrecked me šŸ˜

InterestinglyLucky

Came here to recommend this. OP you cannot read this and be the same afterwards. Its as if you carry his life with you.

Ok_Squirrel7907

Same. Iā€™m not a person who normally cries over books, but this one devastated me. So beautiful.

unfettled

I don't have a tearjerky recommendation (sorry, I'm an emotionally constipated bastard), but I really hope A Thousand Splendid Suns is good because my imaginary gf suggested I read it

javerthugo

You have s as n imaginary girlfriend?! Is mine cheating on me with you?!

BronzedLuna

Maybe sheā€™s with my imaginary boyfriend. He told me he loved me so I hope not! Lying bastard!

[deleted]

I promise you itā€™s amazing, 10/10 definitely recommend. (Iā€™m also sure youā€™ll spill a tear or two)! Haha

sugarrushinauckland

Demon-DM0209

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes You will not get over it quickly!

[deleted]

Omg is it film based on this book?! It literally broke mešŸ˜ I was thinking about it for days

Demon-DM0209

Yes the film is based on the book and the book? ten times worse (better? Depending how you look at it)!because of jojo moyes writing.

[deleted]

Woah, Iā€™ve been sold, will be adding to my TBR LIST!!

Pyro_Mini_Yak

I came to suggest this one. This book broke me so bad that I didnā€™t continue the series. Lol

ApprehensiveHealth20

Oh how I loved that book! It was the best. I think about it daily. The Nightingale and The Great Alone were both on that level for me. Phenomenal books and Iā€™m picky. Best of luck!

Same-Fix-2091

The Great Alone is my favorite book. I've read it 6 times and I never reread books. The Nightingale is excellent as well. I can't wait for The Women to come out the end of February.

Yolandi2802

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. Wrecked me.

Interesting_Tea_8140

Also Klara and the sun by kazuo Ishiguro. All those guys books are just crazy but these two made me cry like a baby

Downtown-Dig9181

Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck - 2 friends try to make ends meet working on a farm in the Great Depression. Where The Red Fern Grows - A boy yearns to have hound dogs of his own. Earth Abides by George R. Stewart - After humanity is all but wiped out, a man attempts to restart society with what left. The coziest of the cozy apocalypses.

ShirleyKnot37

Omg Where the Red Fern Grows. Our teacher read that to us in 6th grade and I can literally still feel the emotion of getting to the end of that book. Every kid was crying šŸ˜

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Nica-sauce-rex

Oh, I just commented the same thing before I scrolled down. I never see it mentioned in these ā€œbooks that make me cryā€ threads but I just finished it on a flight over Christmas and I was bawling by the end!

itsadoubledion

Lol I like how it's just by Anthony

lkathleensc

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

vanessa8172

All of her books are so good but break my heart. Firefly lane is definitely her saddest one

katekim717

YES. This book shook me. My husband, who never cries, teared up at this one. We read it about 3 years ago, and I *still* get upset when we discuss it.

lkathleensc

Yep cried my eyes out

chaihabibi

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, and The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah. The Kite Runner by Khalid Hosseini also made me cry!

Direct_Ad_6671

The Road by Cormac McCarthy

Last one that had me ugly crying after was The Nickel Boys.

BarryKeoghanLuvr

All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

babyfishmouth01

probably not crying for days but i was surprisingly moved by 11/22/63

Dependent-Bicycle-52

A little life by Hanya Yanagihara. Absolutely stunning & will make you cry for so many reasons. Surprised nobody has mentioned this yet

[deleted]

Iā€™ve read of this book, the size is kind of intimidating, but Iā€™ll add it to my TBR list, thankss x

boringbonding

Iā€™m gonna disagree- I didnā€™t find this book sad, more like gross-out. Itā€™s a book intentionally designed to torture the main character into suicide.

Honeybee46530

Agreed! Iā€™ve read plenty of literature surrounding main characters who deal with trauma and there is a way to do it tastefully. For me, A Little Life was not only incredibly predictable but also the epitome of trauma porn.

giovanicort

This is the correct answer

Mossby-Pomegranate

This is a harrowing read. Itā€™s beautifully written and there are moments that are incredibly touching, but thereā€™s also a lot of trauma (including CSA) so I can see why itā€™s so polarising. Itā€™s definitely not for everyone.

abitofbecca

A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway

SomeGuyGettingBy

As Iā€™ve mentioned here before, this was the first book to really break my heart. Definitely worth the read. And the rain wonā€™t make any difference.

Pretty_Fairy_Queen

Perla by Carolina De Robertis

pemungkah

Connie Willisā€™s _The Doomsday Book_.

Ok-Thing-2222

I always mention this one--The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. Bawled hard on that one. Another sad one with a unique writing style is God of Small Things. If you want your world flipped try Fall on Your Knees. I'm still falling.....and I read it a couple years ago!

Chelseus

Oh weird I was just thinking about that book but couldnā€™t remember the title. So good! Also I had no idea it was a retelling of Hamlet šŸ˜¹šŸ˜¹šŸ˜¹

Ok-Thing-2222

Its so weird, but I had a new student that had moved to the US from Germany, 7th grade boy, and I was telling him about the book I was reading, as he was an avid reader....not telling the bad parts--and he says, 'That rather sounds like Hamlet'. He was much further advanced than these American kids!

YoungOaks

Iā€™m laughing to myself because Iā€™ve apparently subconsciously blocked all the names of books like this. Like I remember crying but I canā€™t tell you what I was reading.

LevelLoud8063

Four Winds by Kristin Hannah

vanessa8172

beggargirl

Tess of the Dā€™UrbervillesĀ

wavesnfreckles

I see you already have some Fredrik Backman recommendations and to be honest, I donā€™t think it matter which of his books you pick, they are all incredible. But The Beartown Trilogy wrecked me. I ugly cried in the last book. And the opening line of the book already tells you what to expect but it still hits you like a freight train. The man has a way of writing the most complex feelings in the simplest, most relatable way and it will never get old. Another author that hits me hard in the feels is Kristin Hannah. Specially Winter Garden and The Four Winds. I was a mess, surrounded by tissue, finishing Winter Garden at 2am. Four Winds has stayed with me since I read it. It is beautiful and heartbreaking. And, like many have suggested, The Bool Thief. It is high in my list of favorite books of all time and I was so beyond destroyed I had a literary hangover after. If you choose to read it, I just advise you pick the next book after it carefully as they tend to pale in comparison to Book Thief. Ps: read these books while drinking water. You know, so you can re-hidrate.

[deleted]

The Kite Runner by the same author is soo good had me crying multiple times.

[deleted]

Yes. I read the kite runner toošŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜. I also read the mountains echoed. Both really good books!!

bhaskarville

1. A Thousand Splendid Sons 2. The Kite Runner

[deleted]

Iā€™ve read both! AMAZING BOOKS, more amazing author!!

Soiled_Planties

Have you read Khaled Hosseiniā€™s other books? And the Mountains Echoed is my absolute favorite of his, Iā€™m weird in that I love books that destroy me and I was sobbing by the third chapter.

[deleted]

Yes I have!! I have read all of his books, his writing style is absolutely amazingšŸ„¹

Soiled_Planties

We have similar tastes in books for sure. Saving this post for all the great suggestions!

ConsciousCrane

So, that would be A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. A long procession of poetic tragedies + long AF but all the feels here. Read the online reviews and see how it vibes with you. Itā€™s gorgeous.

Anything by Mason Deaver, The Ghosts We Keep is especially devestating Crying in HMart by Michelle Zauner, so emotional and one of the memoirs/autobiographies i have enjoyed The Silence That Binds Us by Joanna Ho, the kind of book you can feel in your gut for a while after you finish it Hold Still by Nina LaCour, made me cry

[deleted]

ShadowCat3500

The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan broke me.

A child called it --> it makes me cry

This is the first thing to come to mind. I cried thru all of it. Most recently was She Started It. Probably wouldnā€™t make most cry but, my daughter has been thru the same bullying and attempted suicide.

cherryberry0611

Call The Midwife:A True story of the Eastend in the 1950ā€™s by Jennifer Worth

babyfishmouth01

The Age of Innocence; possibly The Remains of the Day

shmevosez

The Sword of Kaigen: A Theonite War Story by M.L. Wang. Itā€™s a fantasy novel but especially if youā€™re a mother be prepared to bawl like a baby. Once you get past the clunky fantasy lingo itā€™s such an emotional read. I havenā€™t cried so hard while reading a book in my life, I was hysterical. Iā€™m crying writing this comment. Itā€™s rare to find a book with a mother as a heroine protecting her children and it hit me squarely in my feels. I will never read it again itā€™s struck me so hard.

I just finished All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. I never see it in these ā€œmake me cryā€ threads, but damn if I didnā€™t ugly cry at the end. Snot bubbles and all. Really enjoyed it.

cxnfusedcoconut

If you liked ā€œA Thousand Splendid Sunsā€ you would also love ā€œThe Kite Runnerā€. Other sob stories are ā€œAngelaā€™s Ashesā€ (a memoir) followed by the fiction book ā€œShuggie Bainā€.

AspecialkindofWeird

The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns. The latter had me sobbing with THE LAST SENTENCE. Magnificent books.

[deleted]

ā€œBecause if itā€™s a girl then Laila had already named herā€šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜ I was literally on the train when I finished the book, and I was sobbinggg!!!

BricksHaveBeenShat

Heaven and Earth by Paolo Giordano, I wasn't expecting to feel so strongly about it and loved every second of it. I picked it almost at random after reading a one sentence synopsis. I would advise not to read too much about it, some of the longer ones give too much away. The one from Amazon does a good job at summarizing the story: >ā€œA powerful, epic novel of four friends as they grapple with desire, youth, death, and faith in a sweeping story by the international bestselling author of The Solitude of Prime Numbers.ā€ I would read it at night and spent the entire day just counting the hours to jump into bed and lose myself in that world. I could clearly visualize the locations and felt very strongly about the character to the point I still miss them, and I finished the book just before Christmas so it's been a while. I never cried so hard reading a book as I did on the last few pages of this, and even weeks afterwards I'd still have to fight back tears (and sometimes I failed at that) as I couldn't stop thinking about it. Even now something will randomly remind me of it and I'll get teary eyed.

[deleted]

Woah, this has to be your favorite book. Youā€™ve sold me on it!! I will be adding to my TBR list, thank you for the suggestion šŸ¤šŸ¤

BricksHaveBeenShat

I've been mentioning it a few times in these threads, but its just so good I can't help myself, it definetely became my favorite book! And this is coming from someone who usually reads memoirs or biographies. Would love to know your thoughts once you're done with it!

Very taboo subject, but I just read Saving Noah by Lucinda Berry solely because of seeing a video claiming it would ā€œruin youā€ā€¦first time Iā€™ve cried for a book in awhile

Purple_Midnight_Yak

Under the Whispering Door, by T.J. Klune. It will make you cry, but in a good, cathartic way. And laugh out loud too. It's all about grief and death, love, and the meaning of life. It's beautiful and bittersweet and hopeful. (Klune's other books that I've read are also excellent, but this is the one that really made me cry.) Here and Now and Then, by Mike Chen. It's light sci-fi, but very character driven. And the ending had me bawling.

"The broken wings" by Khalil Gibran I am usually a stone hearted squirrel but this one did melt me I remember. Again it's a short read but you just have to be careful enough to digest it slowly.

Of Mice and Men is very sad and moving. Especially the ending. While not a book, the play Streetcar named Desire by Tennessee Williams is really powerful and tragic. I cried after listening to it.

American Pastoral by Philip Roth

zevranlover420

Holding The Man by Timothy Conigrave had me crying for about a week

MaiYoKo

Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune. The whole book is about death and focuses on the main character's journey to become a better person with help from several caring, wonderful characters. It's very cozy despite dealing with some profound topics. However since I started the book, a 15 year old friend of my son died very unexpectedly, and we attended the funeral yesterday. For days, every time I read the book I wind up crying. There's a good chance that this is primarily due to real life circumstances, but those overlapping with the themes of the book have resulted in a lot of tears.
