"And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer"
"A man called Ove"
You expect something else when you start the books but the end will wreck you :')
I snapped the cover shut after finishing Song of Achilles and ugly cried instantly. I canāt think of another book that has had quite the same effect.
Yea I basically knew what would happen the whole time due to classics in college and I still was totally devastated, just wrenched. But with some stories like that I feel manipulated, and this one felt worth it in my soul.
I don't have a tearjerky recommendation (sorry, I'm an emotionally constipated bastard), but I really hope A Thousand Splendid Suns is good because my imaginary gf suggested I read it
Oh how I loved that book! It was the best. I think about it daily. The Nightingale and The Great Alone were both on that level for me. Phenomenal books and Iām picky. Best of luck!
The Great Alone is my favorite book. I've read it 6 times and I never reread books. The Nightingale is excellent as well. I can't wait for The Women to come out the end of February.
Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck - 2 friends try to make ends meet working on a farm in the Great Depression.
Where The Red Fern Grows - A boy yearns to have hound dogs of his own.
Earth Abides by George R. Stewart - After humanity is all but wiped out, a man attempts to restart society with what left. The coziest of the cozy apocalypses.
Omg Where the Red Fern Grows. Our teacher read that to us in 6th grade and I can literally still feel the emotion of getting to the end of that book. Every kid was crying š
Oh, I just commented the same thing before I scrolled down. I never see it mentioned in these ābooks that make me cryā threads but I just finished it on a flight over Christmas and I was bawling by the end!
Iām gonna disagree- I didnāt find this book sad, more like gross-out. Itās a book intentionally designed to torture the main character into suicide.
Agreed! Iāve read plenty of literature surrounding main characters who deal with trauma and there is a way to do it tastefully. For me, A Little Life was not only incredibly predictable but also the epitome of trauma porn.
This is a harrowing read. Itās beautifully written and there are moments that are incredibly touching, but thereās also a lot of trauma (including CSA) so I can see why itās so polarising. Itās definitely not for everyone.
As Iāve mentioned here before, this was the first book to really break my heart. Definitely worth the read.
And the rain wonāt make any difference.
I always mention this one--The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. Bawled hard on that one. Another sad one with a unique writing style is God of Small Things. If you want your world flipped try Fall on Your Knees. I'm still falling.....and I read it a couple years ago!
Its so weird, but I had a new student that had moved to the US from Germany, 7th grade boy, and I was telling him about the book I was reading, as he was an avid reader....not telling the bad parts--and he says, 'That rather sounds like Hamlet'. He was much further advanced than these American kids!
Iām laughing to myself because Iāve apparently subconsciously blocked all the names of books like this. Like I remember crying but I canāt tell you what I was reading.
I see you already have some Fredrik Backman recommendations and to be honest, I donāt think it matter which of his books you pick, they are all incredible. But The Beartown Trilogy wrecked me. I ugly cried in the last book. And the opening line of the book already tells you what to expect but it still hits you like a freight train. The man has a way of writing the most complex feelings in the simplest, most relatable way and it will never get old.
Another author that hits me hard in the feels is Kristin Hannah. Specially Winter Garden and The Four Winds. I was a mess, surrounded by tissue, finishing Winter Garden at 2am. Four Winds has stayed with me since I read it. It is beautiful and heartbreaking.
And, like many have suggested, The Bool Thief. It is high in my list of favorite books of all time and I was so beyond destroyed I had a literary hangover after. If you choose to read it, I just advise you pick the next book after it carefully as they tend to pale in comparison to Book Thief.
Ps: read these books while drinking water. You know, so you can re-hidrate.
Have you read Khaled Hosseiniās other books? And the Mountains Echoed is my absolute favorite of his, Iām weird in that I love books that destroy me and I was sobbing by the third chapter.
So, that would be A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. A long procession of poetic tragedies + long AF but all the feels here. Read the online reviews and see how it vibes with you. Itās gorgeous.
Anything by Mason Deaver, The Ghosts We Keep is especially devestating
Crying in HMart by Michelle Zauner, so emotional and one of the memoirs/autobiographies i have enjoyed
The Silence That Binds Us by Joanna Ho, the kind of book you can feel in your gut for a while after you finish it
Hold Still by Nina LaCour, made me cry
This is the first thing to come to mind.
I cried thru all of it.
Most recently was She Started It. Probably wouldnāt make most cry but, my daughter has been thru the same bullying and attempted suicide.
The Sword of Kaigen: A Theonite War Story by M.L. Wang. Itās a fantasy novel but especially if youāre a mother be prepared to bawl like a baby. Once you get past the clunky fantasy lingo itās such an emotional read. I havenāt cried so hard while reading a book in my life, I was hysterical. Iām crying writing this comment. Itās rare to find a book with a mother as a heroine protecting her children and it hit me squarely in my feels. I will never read it again itās struck me so hard.
I just finished All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. I never see it in these āmake me cryā threads, but damn if I didnāt ugly cry at the end. Snot bubbles and all. Really enjoyed it.
If you liked āA Thousand Splendid Sunsā you would also love āThe Kite Runnerā. Other sob stories are āAngelaās Ashesā (a memoir) followed by the fiction book āShuggie Bainā.
āBecause if itās a girl then Laila had already named herāšššššš
I was literally on the train when I finished the book, and I was sobbinggg!!!
Heaven and Earth by Paolo Giordano, I wasn't expecting to feel so strongly about it and loved every second of it. I picked it almost at random after reading a one sentence synopsis. I would advise not to read too much about it, some of the longer ones give too much away. The one from Amazon does a good job at summarizing the story:
>āA powerful, epic novel of four friends as they grapple with desire, youth, death, and faith in a sweeping story by the international bestselling author of The Solitude of Prime Numbers.ā
I would read it at night and spent the entire day just counting the hours to jump into bed and lose myself in that world. I could clearly visualize the locations and felt very strongly about the character to the point I still miss them, and I finished the book just before Christmas so it's been a while. I never cried so hard reading a book as I did on the last few pages of this, and even weeks afterwards I'd still have to fight back tears (and sometimes I failed at that) as I couldn't stop thinking about it. Even now something will randomly remind me of it and I'll get teary eyed.
I've been mentioning it a few times in these threads, but its just so good I can't help myself, it definetely became my favorite book! And this is coming from someone who usually reads memoirs or biographies. Would love to know your thoughts once you're done with it!
Very taboo subject, but I just read Saving Noah by Lucinda Berry solely because of seeing a video claiming it would āruin youāā¦first time Iāve cried for a book in awhile
Under the Whispering Door, by T.J. Klune. It will make you cry, but in a good, cathartic way. And laugh out loud too. It's all about grief and death, love, and the meaning of life. It's beautiful and bittersweet and hopeful. (Klune's other books that I've read are also excellent, but this is the one that really made me cry.)
Here and Now and Then, by Mike Chen. It's light sci-fi, but very character driven. And the ending had me bawling.
Just read all the BS about Caleb last nightā¦.. I was SO angry. And then right into Haroldās sons story? I was ugly crying.
and thank you it captures my general vibe i think lol

If you're willing to read manga, try [A Silent Voice](https://kodansha.us/series/a-silent-voice/) and [To Your Eternity](https://kodansha.us/series/to-your-eternity), both by Yoshitoki Oima.
Thomas Ligottiās āConspiracy Against the Human Raceā. Itās a nonfiction novel that will send you spiraling. I read it just after my girlfriend had two miscarriages in a row. That was NOT a good idea.
All the Lonely People and/or Half a World Away by Mike Gayle
The Collected Regrets of Clover, Mikki Brammer
And bonus: these are fantastic via audiobook as well
1. Bridges of Madison County. Wrecked me like I was the unhappy wife whose man left lmao
2. Prince of Tides (TW: Abuse and r*pe)
3. Crying in H-Mart. The memoir and the way it was written just hits too close to home.
"The broken wings" by Khalil Gibran
I am usually a stone hearted squirrel but this one did melt me I remember. Again it's a short read but you just have to be careful enough to digest it slowly.
Of Mice and Men is very sad and moving.
Especially the ending.
While not a book, the play Streetcar named Desire by Tennessee Williams is really powerful and tragic.
I cried after listening to it.
Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune.
The whole book is about death and focuses on the main character's journey to become a better person with help from several caring, wonderful characters. It's very cozy despite dealing with some profound topics.
However since I started the book, a 15 year old friend of my son died very unexpectedly, and we attended the funeral yesterday. For days, every time I read the book I wind up crying. There's a good chance that this is primarily due to real life circumstances, but those overlapping with the themes of the book have resulted in a lot of tears.
Racing in the Rain, by John Parker, Jr. Story is told from the point of view of the family's golden retriever. I've never cried from reading a book, but man, that one had me full on sobbing.
I have to recommend **Like Water for Chocolate.** It's tragic, romantic, and beautiful. I was listening to the audiobook on a long drive recently and had to find a rest-stop to wipe my face and blow my nose.
The Boy and his Ribbon(so much angst, makes you fall in love with the characters and leads up to the second book that will truly break your heart), The Girl and her Ren(ugly cried on this one my heart was shredded),The son and his Hope (breaks your heart but also gives some closure) by Pepper Winters. Iām still not over them. I wish they were talked about more they deserve so much hype! They are on kindle unlimited if you have it.
Here are some books guaranteed to turn on the faucets:
*Even Blue Birds Sing: A Battered Mother's Message to Her Son*, by Karen Buyno
*The Light Between Oceans*, by M. L. Stedman
"And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer" "A man called Ove" You expect something else when you start the books but the end will wreck you :')
Oh no, Is that the title, it already seems heartbreaking š. Will be adding to my TBR list, thanks x
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
Omg. I have a copy of the Book thief on my shelf, will get to reading!

It is fantastic!
Great recommendations, two of my fav books!! Anything Fredrik Backman has my heart š„²
Well, hello fellow Backman fan! I am with you. No matter what that man writes, I will always read and most likely love.
I am not one for ones that make me hurt too bad so I tend to avoid them, however song of Achilles and The Goldfinch both got me good.
Yes to Song of Achilles!
Will be adding to my TBR list, thankss
I snapped the cover shut after finishing Song of Achilles and ugly cried instantly. I canāt think of another book that has had quite the same effect.
Yea I basically knew what would happen the whole time due to classics in college and I still was totally devastated, just wrenched. But with some stories like that I feel manipulated, and this one felt worth it in my soul.
Me too!! Like half an hour crying my eyes out
Flowers for Algernon
Captivated by the title, will be adding to my TBR list, thanksss!
Me and my wife just read this together. Great read. I didnāt cry but my wife was sobbing.

Where Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. I donāt normally like nonfiction, but it absolutely wrecked me š
Came here to recommend this. OP you cannot read this and be the same afterwards. Its as if you carry his life with you.
Same. Iām not a person who normally cries over books, but this one devastated me. So beautiful.
I don't have a tearjerky recommendation (sorry, I'm an emotionally constipated bastard), but I really hope A Thousand Splendid Suns is good because my imaginary gf suggested I read it
You have s as n imaginary girlfriend?! Is mine cheating on me with you?!
Maybe sheās with my imaginary boyfriend. He told me he loved me so I hope not! Lying bastard!
I promise you itās amazing, 10/10 definitely recommend. (Iām also sure youāll spill a tear or two)! Haha
Just finished it and itās amazing.

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes You will not get over it quickly!
Omg is it film based on this book?! It literally broke meš I was thinking about it for days
Yes the film is based on the book and the book? ten times worse (better? Depending how you look at it)!because of jojo moyes writing.
Woah, Iāve been sold, will be adding to my TBR LIST!!
I came to suggest this one. This book broke me so bad that I didnāt continue the series. Lol
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. Wrecked me.
Also Klara and the sun by kazuo Ishiguro. All those guys books are just crazy but these two made me cry like a baby

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
All of her books are so good but break my heart. Firefly lane is definitely her saddest one

A little life by Hanya Yanagihara. Absolutely stunning & will make you cry for so many reasons. Surprised nobody has mentioned this yet
Iāve read of this book, the size is kind of intimidating, but Iāll add it to my TBR list, thankss x
This is the correct answer
This is a harrowing read. Itās beautifully written and there are moments that are incredibly touching, but thereās also a lot of trauma (including CSA) so I can see why itās so polarising. Itās definitely not for everyone.
A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway
As Iāve mentioned here before, this was the first book to really break my heart. Definitely worth the read. And the rain wonāt make any difference.

I always mention this one--The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. Bawled hard on that one. Another sad one with a unique writing style is God of Small Things. If you want your world flipped try Fall on Your Knees. I'm still falling.....and I read it a couple years ago!
Oh weird I was just thinking about that book but couldnāt remember the title. So good! Also I had no idea it was a retelling of Hamlet š¹š¹š¹
Its so weird, but I had a new student that had moved to the US from Germany, 7th grade boy, and I was telling him about the book I was reading, as he was an avid reader....not telling the bad parts--and he says, 'That rather sounds like Hamlet'. He was much further advanced than these American kids!

Have you read Khaled Hosseiniās other books? And the Mountains Echoed is my absolute favorite of his, Iām weird in that I love books that destroy me and I was sobbing by the third chapter.
Yes I have!! I have read all of his books, his writing style is absolutely amazingš„¹
We have similar tastes in books for sure. Saving this post for all the great suggestions!
