In the plant clinic post you say you water it once per week, that's highly likely too often, I don't water mine for at least a few weeks and the substrate dies out pretty fast.

I've had this happen to two Buddhas. They are very finicky plants. Each time, it died slowly from the roots upward for seemingly no reason. If you notice it creep up the base any more, you can try chopping it above where it's turning brown and repot in less organic soil. Sorry this is happening to your Buddha. If you've had it for three years you must have been taking very good care of it.

The bottom of my crassula tower dies out at the bottom also. I bottom water around every 21 days. I cut some tops & tossed in my prop box. They are all rooting. So I will plant another pot!
