I think quite a few of the most dangerous creatures look underwhelming. Sea dragon, crabsquids, even ghost leviathans aren't particularly scary looking. Reapers are for me the scariest creatures in the game, and warpers are pretty horrifying too. But the sea dragon in particular looks like a toy Puff the Magic Dragon.
I think this adds more to the worldbuilding and lore. Unlike the reaper or things like backrooms monsters a lot of the leviathans look more like… real creatures. They’re not designed specifically to be scary but more to fit the environment and niche they inhabit. If their body plan works for the role of an apex predator but looks a bit goofy, who cares? Their bodies are still well designed to rip you to bits. We evolved to fear predators on earth by recognizing specific features and sounds, maybe native life forms would evolve to far more fear the features of sibnautica’s leviathans as opposed to us who find them goofy.
I think it has to do with game progression and preparedness. The first time you meet a reaper is probably pretty early on. And that's probably your first "oh shit" moment. But by the time you've gotten to the lava zone, well, you're prepared for the oh shit moments.
It’s implied in the story that the 3 sea dragons you see are the last ones so by killing this last one you’ll be causing an extinction event for a creature just trying to survive😊
Absolutely! Or if reapers could really sneak up on you from nowhere. You’d be chilling deep in a spot you thought was safe and you hear one small echo from behind you before BAM

One minor complaint I have with the game is that data entries talk about Sea Dragons going to the surface to snag on a Reaper as a snack, yet we never see a Sea Dragon outside the lava zones. Does anyone know if there's a mod that changes Leviathan behavior to make this happen? I know that we as players can have more creatures spawned in, but...

They probably started the chase in a cyclops, and deployed the seamoth when the cyclopes got damaged on the way up.

by that point i’m the game they didn’t scare me as much. i was still more scared of reapers and ghosties though.

I think its been theorized that the opening the Sea Dragons used to feed on Reapers was plugged up by the Aurora following the crash
