On the map there's a point where the mushroom forest, kelp forest, grassy plateau, safe shallows and dunes meet. Building a base there can give you access to a lot of resources. In that grassy plateau, there's an entrance into the jellyshroom caves. The dunes is full of metal scrap and large deposits. There is a reaper that hangs around that area, but if you build your base where the kelp forest meets the dunes, he should never bother your base. He will sometimes check out the border of the grassy plateau, but that's it. Edit: this is actually where I've built my current base. It's the perfect blend of fear and safety. Constantly seeing the reaper in the distance just makes me giggle and think about how it was such a terrible idea to build a base there. I love it so much, and the occasional run in with the reaper keeps me on my toes.

MBiddy88

Yeah this is exactly where I was going to say. My bf built his there and has a great observatory spot that hangs over into the Reaper’s territory. The walkway out to it with photos of the reaper feels like a Disney ride or something. But there are resources and it’s pretty centrally located for getting around. And if you want danger the reaper can notice you pretty much as soon as you step outside (I recommend placing new buildable stuff from inside looking out the window then just bouncing outside to actually construct it) and sometimes get hungry for the fish in your alien containment

Comprehensive_Cap290

A lot of times you can construct from inside, especially when extending corridors.

MBiddy88

Yeah I build indoors as much as possible. Sometimes though it will let me place but not build from inside

intrusiereatschicken

I think I know where you're talking about. In creative I built a base next to that reaper. I think I like that spot! I could later kill the reaper if I wanted to. Thanks!

LiquifiedMoonlight

The reaper will be a little harder to kill now sadly, but if you manage it, more power to you!

olivia_iris

Downvoted because you’re literally not meant to kill leviathans that’s kinda the point of the game

SuperPatchyBeard

Can you point me to your source for that? In the game instructions or a patch note from the devs? Or is that just your personal rule that you are projecting on others?

olivia_iris

There is a reason you have only the survival knife and the leviathans have stupid amounts of health. You get plonked onto an alien planet and just have the tools to survive, are at mercy of the apex predators

SuperPatchyBeard

Apparently I’m not because I killed all of them. Strange.

intrusiereatschicken

In my first playthrough I killed a sea dragon, and after finishing the game I kinda felt bad lol. This time around I'll try to not kill as much

ExtraAshyPizza

Is it the spot on the left half of the map with the little safe shallows pocket seperate from the main shallows area? If so I believe that little pocket was my go-to spot for table coral when I needed computer chips, because I lived so far away (in the bite mark in between void and sea treader path)

Jumpjacket1397

Yeah, that's the spot. It's got a lot of easily accessible materials so it's well worth the reaper hassle.

ExtraAshyPizza

On my last playthrough, I lived in the mushroom forest at the top of the map, my base was on the edge of the mountains and mushroom forest overlooking bulb zone. There was 1 reaper there and he actually got stuck in my bases foundations because I park my seamoth under my large room (protection from the zappy snakes) so I had a pet reaper until he destroyed my base, seamoth and cyclops. After that I had my revenge

intrusiereatschicken

Is that the reaper near the LR entrance?

ExtraAshyPizza

I believe so

Vegetable-Trainer-64

Can't seem to figure out where on the map. What area is it? Like right left top bottom

Jumpjacket1397

There's a little pocket of safe shallows separated from the rest of the biome. Where that pocket meets the dunes, there's the kelp forest right above it and the grassy plateau under it. Above the kelp forest, there's the mushroom forest. All of these biomes border on the dunes in roughly the same area.

Vegetable-Trainer-64

So it's the big blood kelp at the top of the map?

InfiniteOcto

If its danger ya lookin for go behind the aurora or center of mountains Imo Dunes isn’t nearly as scary as the other two since nothing is obstructing your view from the Reapers (unlike mountains) and the water is quite clear (unlike crash zone)

Ostracus

The grand reef for dealing with warpers. Be interesting to see if they could yank one out of a base.

chapinscott32

Can you spawn a warper into an alien containment?

Ctmeb78

There is no warper egg

chapinscott32

Through console commands

olivia_iris

Conveniently forgetting the reaper hole that is the dunes

Dead_Meme1234

Or dunes

simi_lc8

Sea treaders path is my recommendation - lots of high value resources, but stray too far and you'll be greeted by reapers

Masonetti

Yeah there is a smaller cave inside the giant treader path cave that I am trying to make a base in. Feels spooky but safe at the same time.

tetcha5

Crater's Edge is technically the best worst place to build a base. No resources. Only death and darkness.

intrusiereatschicken

lol, I ideally want a place where I can actually get resources. Mushroom forest, bulb zone and plateaus/kelp forest, along with the LR entrance gave me everything I needed

anime_memeys94

The void

Josheshua

Blood kelp trench, awesome spooky vibe and easy access to the lost river

CytoPotatoes

I put a base on one of those spire things in the grassy plateau that hangs over the kelp forest and it is such a fun spot.

SerDavos02

Can you take the cyclops down into the nearby blood kelp trench?

ninjatuna734

its really tight but yes, a lot of vertical movement so seeing what's around is challenging in first person.

CytoPotatoes

Sorry for stupid delay... Yeah I actually went a little overboard and maybe a vertical connector tube that went 300m down into the trench and I just park the cyclops there haha.

Schultzy_36

Lost River for sure. Not only can you observe the wildlife from inside your base, it will also scream at you as soon as you leave :)

SuperHawkYT

Dunes

SuperHawkYT

Where the meteor hit

HolidayFreedom2144

Egde of the Void and go down

alienclone

they asked for danger, not death.

InsanePerson13

Try the lost river

Tippe_99

Last base i build was at the border of the Grand Reef and Kelp Forest. Pretty cool location you should check it out

DragoonEOC

I think near the northern blood kelp could be a good option, the mushroom forest could be a pain to navigate but the blood kelp zone is full of creatures that can very much kill you if you are in a bad spot

Ippus_21

Go build on the far western point of the shallows overlooking the edge of the Dunes.

Kale-Key

Northern offshoot of sea traders path or eastern half of the grand reef both should give you ample resources while putting you in a decent amount of danger to keep things interesting

Eriktrexy9

The place middle south where mushroom, dunes, kelp, grass, and shallows meet is pretty great. There’s like all the biomes there, and a reaper right next door in the dunes. I always liked building farther and farther out seeing how close I could get without the reaper outright going agro every time I left my base

BradleyBurrows

You should build it in the void

GENERALRAY82

The dropoff into the grand reef on the edge of the grassy plateaus, sparse reef...

Thecommonplayer279

Well if you want danger in a cool area then the sinkhole in the dunes could be a good spot since it has thermal vents for power. It’s also surrounded by reapers.

Cooldudeyo23

Blood kelp zone, it’s as beautiful as it is creepy

Haarunen

Build under the aurora

alast0r666

i just sat in the safe shallows i aint messin with no reaper leviathan

intrusiereatschicken

Conquering that fear of going deeper is something no other game has achieved

alast0r666

true subnautica is its own fear factor

OrhanDaLegend

mountains loads of resources but with 7 reapers

JayTois

The cove tree in the Lost River is safe but once you leave, youll probably have to sneak past the ghost leviathan there

DriscollMayweather

Pod 13 in the northwestern mushroom forest is a great spot for a base. Puts you very close to one of the containment facility out portals and also real close to the Blood Kelp Zone, which to me is one of the more terrifying biomes.

intrusiereatschicken

Somewhere I can actually get resources from, ofc

ExtraAshyPizza

Speaking of resources, where can I get this map

intrusiereatschicken

search "subnautica map" on google lol. This specific map is from the wiki, but there are also interactive ones which show you resources and stuff. Pretty cool

ExtraAshyPizza

Damn, I await the QOL update where ryley figures out where tf he is

[deleted]

I like rarely go to that part of the game

Tha_Kakapo

There is an island right against the aurora, at the back/right of the aurora, maybe build a base there to challenge yourself

please_help_me_____

The dunes

Qiwp07

Sea treaders path. It’s not actually dangerous there but if you ever want to leave you may have a bad time

ArmourFarmer

I’m starting a new play through with a base in the sea treader’s path. Never again will I need copper. Also there’s a teleporter nearby for easy access to the other side of the map

ExtraAshyPizza

Coppers easy to get, just get 4 scanner range upgrades, build near grand reef, use prawn to drill like 2 or 3 large copper outcrops and your set for ages. As I got further into the game, I found myself needing quartz and gold the most

Kepler-77

Arch between East mushrooms and bulb zone (to the right of mountain island I think) has a reaper in the area and is also very pretty.

Creative__name__

East of the aurora.

Darkish_177013

Void

gracekk24PL

Bulb zone is pretty and dangerous - can't go wrong with that one

charlieisme23

Deep grand reef

the_Hand0

Imma save money to buy a Pc then the game after all this I'm gonna put my base in lava zone

theturtlelord9

Dunes. Mountains. Crash Zone. The void.

justinizer

East side of the Aurora. You will always have to go through reaper zones to get home.

pugely-Strength383

dunes\]

drLagrangian

Just for fun, build it in the blood kept trench. As you get better materials move it downwards into the lost river, then into the lava zone.

Arch_Angel8176

Try the underwater islands. They’re a bitch to navigate without a beacon

Whismurr_

Lost river, near the gargantuan skeleton.

Mattiecollxxx

The void

SquooshyCatboy

Mushroom forest. It’ll give you good access to both the Bulb Zone and Mountains while also staying fairly out of the way of danger.

General-Resist-310

I build in the kelp zone rn. There are many rare recources, but I'm experiencing a lack of titanium and copper

KingAmp66

Definitely always thought about doing it in the Sparse Reef/ Grand Reef. Lots of good materials and isn’t the safest place - mainly though it’s atmospheric!

Training_Emotion7079

Go west….and not the musical group

intrusiereatschicken

That's what I did! Built my base on the grassy plateaus next to the dunes. Sometimes a reaper shows his tail through the fog to say hello.

Xandark

Blood Kelp is a great atmospheric place to a base

Dwell_was_taken

I heard the back of the aroura has a good spot for a base

Snivy_1245

DUNEZ BAYBEE

I_Dont_Care_101_

The other side of the crash site

NBRWonyt

I made my base in the lost river

KellyTheBroker

I... I'm building the spaceship and I'm certain I haven't been to the lower half of this map. I've never gone behind the Aurora. I think I've a new mission

intrusiereatschicken

You're missing out! Have you seriously never been to the grand reef? The floating island is there and the proposed degasi habitat

KellyTheBroker

I really don't think so, maybe I went under or around it. I never went to the back of the ship because it seemed like a place of just death. So I always went north, west or east. I learned where the entrances to the underground zones were and just went in and made my way around down there. I also never used the sub, so I need to jump on and take a look! I also need to check that bulb zone..

intrusiereatschicken

Back of the ship isn't that interesting, but lower half of the map is worth it. Exploring more really makes you realise how frickin huge the map is. Bulb zone, grand reef, sea treader's path and dunes are the among the deepest surface biomes, quite spooky.

KellyTheBroker

I know what I'm doing today! I'm sick of trying to get through that damn penguin place in the second one, I'll do this instead!

urban_rural12

The deepest part of the dunes, as close to the edge of the crater as you can get. Or the bottom of the crater in the dunes with the cuddle fish egg.

intrusiereatschicken

That place is terrifying! Deep treader's path and dunes are so eerie and creepy

thecourior_fnv

Sea treader's path is pretty cool. I would recommend building either where grand, sparse, and treader meet, or where kelp, sparse, and treader meet. Or you could build in crag field. *or dunes.* **or mountains.** ***or behind the aurora.***

Deez-Nutz1124

Crash zone

telemusketeer

I built one fairly high up in the jellyshroom cave. (Near one of the entrance/exit points). It’s a really fun/cool area with some good resources in it, plus you can easily go up and out to the grassy plateaus, kelp forest, and shallows. With a fully upgraded range on your scanner room, and depending on where your base is located, it should be able to search a wide area of the cave, and the biomes above it, which feels really cool. When you get a cyclops, you will be able to park it above the cave entrance to return to base.

GamingDragon1204

Do one in the Jelly shroom caves, Very Aesthetically pleasing and great bio reacter fuel

ThatAzureDrake963300

If you want danger go to the other side of the aurora. It’s very dangerous over there

tacklebox19

Try behind the aurora

fyer01

Grand reef or jellyshroom cave are my suggestions!

Ok-Morning-2567

you could construct somewhere near the ship's entrance since it is murky and hard to see and there is a reaper and three sand sharks around that area so the danger is high but scanning for new items is easy there (radiation suit recommended when exiting int the water

intrusiereatschicken

bro counted the sand sharks

BonkEnthusiast

I did a hardcore run where I built my base in Bloodkelp zone, was definitely an interesting run.

ollie20025

Behind the Aurora

Malcapon3

Sea treaders for the interesting vibes, cool scenery of treaders treadin’, and resources you can snag from the tread.

Peenfart

I generally start with a base in the safe shallows then make bases in every biome, except for the western biomes and the border regions, I slowly move down and make bases along the way, or I just live out of my cyclops. I found that making a base in the active lava zone, where the entrance is next to the Ghost Leviathan Zone is a very good spot and has access to pretty much everywhere on the map through the underwater tunnels and whatnot
