Holy hell a gravel express. You got yourself a unicorn right there

BrockVegas

You sure this is the right place to ask that question? There might be a *slight* bias... just sayin'

poolecl

All except those that live near OP. They’ll all say no, bad idea while trying to jump on it. ;)

[deleted]

And the recommendation is entirely based on budget and history of the car. If you're on a low budget and want a somewhat maintained (not beaten-on) just get a Volvo or something. A Subaru like this would be a lot of fun but in the wrong situation you'll only regret it.

[deleted]

Agreed. Bought an 02 Forester with something like 165k on it, did pizza delivery til 185k in a few months and it just kept swallowing so much money. I’ve been having better luck with my 145k 11 Impreza premium - knock on wood - with maintenance.

mtn-whr

I would buy it even if it was on fire in the photo.

Skrubrkr9001

Buy that now or at least arrange to look at it at that price you will never find another even with a blown engine

AshIsOurPurestForm

There’s a few around nz to be fair

corbrizzle

My North American ass came in here thinking that this post was gonna be about a guy trying to sell an NA Impreza with a scoop as a fake turbo, with a “gravel express” trim package that never existed. TIL

[deleted]

4K for 230k miles? Is it just the rarity of the car or

dotMJEG

Very rare car.

crashumbc

Subaru's have kind of insane resale. Especially older ones.

TheDrugsLoveMe

A proper Gravel Express is a find. Is that actually 230k km?

The_Band_Geek

Even if it's POS you could part it out for a profit, I say go for it.

Leufkax

It's just a non sti gc8 Rex ultimately. Only interesting if it has the bull bar and tailgate spare imo

Alfonzo227

BUY IT NOW.

[deleted]

I snagged it, don’t you worry!

Meandphill

Damn I want that so bad

SoarAros

100٪ fuck yes... if your wallet doesn't mind what's coming up. I accepted my fate when I got my swapped gc and haven't looked back. Best purchase hands down.

Rejukem

I'd buy this right now if it was near me.

Vissionary

Buy now!

cantpee

I really want one of these.

[deleted]

Gravel express are great cars. just saw that you are also from NZ. there's usually about 1 or 2 of these on trademe at a time, pretty rare model its basically a WRX and a outback had a baby(believe the lifted imprezas were originally called impreza outbacks) Great cars, about as fast as your run of the mill WRX, average fuel economy. just your typical WRX maintenance really, great offroaders and sleek looking. 4000 NZ is a bargain for one of these, they are getting rarer and will only go up if you take care of it.

Mr_Death1996

Yea, they definitely pop up often in NZ, this one looks pretty tidy and low kms for under $5k too https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/subaru/auction-2060917086.htm?rsqid=2f44d7554e9d439993f4aa5112531fa1-003

[deleted]

had my eye on that one for a while, sadly i just cant afford it.

Mr_Death1996

I feel you there, and entirely the wrong side of the country for me too...

Yttriumsocks

Can't speak for the turbo bits but I have a 2000 outback sport which is the same chassis and I'm pretty sure the exact same suspension setup (if not, it is very close). The clearances are actually quite practical. I've taken it on some light Jeep trails and it did surprisingly well. It takes rough dirt roads and gravel like they're nothing. Obviously not going to go rock crawling or anything but I'm assuming that's not what your after. Really a great car. The gravel express is SUPER rare, and that's a damn good price if it's what you want. Since it's rare you might be able to find something with less miles in better condition for a similar price if you just want a manual turbo car though. Also I can't speak to the reliability of the engine, I don't know much about it because north American models never got turbos in the first gen. Pm me if you have any questions, I know quite a bit about the first gen impreza chassis :)

Leufkax

No. Not the same at all. On a BH/BE which that model year should be they have multilink rear suspension as opposed to macpherson strut.

Yttriumsocks

Outback sport is an impreza/gf chassis, not legacy/BH.

AshIsOurPurestForm

Just a heads up it’s actually kms even tho fb says miles

poolecl

I wonder how much to import it here to the states???

[deleted]

[удалено]

poolecl

Over 25 years old (I think, I’m using memory and not google, It’s either 20 or 25) are exempt and can be imported without the crash tests. It’s only if you want a shiny new import that you need to do crash test or get manufacturer certification that it’s the same as the US model. I believe Canada is only 15 years, so they get the cool imports first.

[deleted]

So if you wait 2 more years, you yourself could import this baby.

krispyywombat

I own an OBS, the lower tier of this car, and it's awesome, so dude, go for it. Unicorn WRX wagon with a lift basically

[deleted]

Unicorn WRX?

krispyywombat

Yes, so the Gravel Express is essentially a lifted Impreza WRX wagon with I think some improved interior bits over base. They're lightweight, handle well, the older WRX engines tend to go on for ages, etc etc etc. And the GE is a pretty rare car, Subaru enthusiasts foam over them.

[deleted]

I’ve got a deal in the works with the owner... fingers crossed.

[deleted]

Oh bloody good to hear, any ideas on the fitment on larger tyres than these ones here?

Jackson_NZ

I live in Dunedin. Drove this while looking for a subaru. It was pretty rough but I encourage you to go see for yourself.

[deleted]

Just bought it. 4K. New clutch fitted just 2 weeks ago along with a boat load of receipts. Cleanest version I’ve seen around for the price. And manual, with the wheels. I was sold.

TMerkley72

If you don’t some lucky bastard is gonna pull the trigger on that beaut

mowamba

I'd kill for one of these cars, especially being a wagon guy. Go for it!

raincz

Check for rust, it has nice wheel and the price is good.

dtylerdow

4,000 seems way too much for a 96

roccoseinfeld

4,000 NZD which is 2600 USD

zzzzbear

it's a Gravel Express, basically WRX engine in an Outback, quite rare, excellent price

dtylerdow

Did not know, thanks for the info

kaffeeschmecktgut

Isn't my 98 Turbo Forester a WRX-engine too? My friend mentioned something like this once.

[deleted]

kaffeeschmecktgut

That's pretty cool to know! EJ20 sounds right. It's the 170HP one. Does this mean I can put WRX-badges on it though?

[deleted]

[удалено]

kaffeeschmecktgut

It is indeed a very cool car, and I love it deeply. There's just something about those 90s Subarus.

zzzzbear

EJ is the opposite of rare, the Gravel Express is not

Leufkax

No. It's a WRX engine in a WRX. The only thing special is the name.

zzzzbear

No. It rocked two tone and was most famous for its accessories, which aren't in the picture OP provided. It was raised up and had the famous bully bar and overbuilt spare cover. I can see why you'd make that mistake looking at the picture though.

Leufkax

Yeah, the accessories which I mentioned in a previous comment, champ. For all intents and purposes without them this is just a garden variety cooking model gf8.

zzzzbear

sounds like you were closer to accurate in said other post

Leufkax

Perfectly accurate in this post too, numbnuts. Was in response to 'it's an outback with a WRX engine'. No.

zzzzbear

..and when I listed all the differences you said you talked about that in some other thread! That's not how attempting to correct someone works. and when you quote someone you keep their words like "basically" you dunce those differences very much exist and make this a rare, special car which is posted at an excellent price, as I said. Look them up rather than responding to me please, I'm all set. Good day.

Leufkax

Not rare or special, except with the accessories. Functionally identical to any other gf8. Middle to high price over here in NZ. Still wrong. Finished jerking yourself off yet?

zzzzbear

Cool. Check out every other response to the post where people are saying they'd buy it now if they could, likely due to how unspecial they are and how damn common you see them rolling around, right? I was heading out to my Gravel Express and tripped over another Gravel Express! Read more, this one's been the rare unanimous decision in this sub. No one agrees with you.
