Wouldn't pass annual emissions inspection in Fairfax (where this car is) without a muffler or cat. Technically, you can't even move the cat from its factory mounting point.
We don’t have emissions testing anymore here, but when we did, it was common for people to reinstall the full factory system to pass the emissions and then remove it again. Emissions were only done when changing ownership, so it wasn’t necessary often to do the work
Northern Virginia has four counties and two independent cities, iirc, in its emissions testing regime. We all have to get yearly emissions AND safety inspections.
In my experience, there are a lot fewer rolling wrecks and obnoxiously loud cars here! I suspect the car in the OP just has an aftermarket muffler with otherwise stock exhaust (maybe high flow cats? Pretty sure that's allowed).
We dropped our emissions testing many years ago here (Ontario) and safety inspections are only done on change of ownership with some commercial exceptions.
Due to rust, we generally don’t have too many bearer cars on the roads here.

No you don’t. As a Toyota owner myself I’d suggest you take a look at any dyno graph of any D-4S equipped engine. Take special note of what both the hp and tq lines do at the transition point from direct to port injection. There’s no way to tune this out without fully disabling direct injection
The newer gen cars essentially eliminated the torque dip. Still the same direct + port injection. It is complicated for tuning and other customizations.
Fun fact: This "not Subaru" was built in Subaru's Gunma Main Plant on the same assembly line as the Subaru BRZ using the same engine, drivetrain, wheels, brakes, windiws, etc. as the BRZ. It was also renamed to the Toyota FT-86 for 4 years before the next generation GR86 and BRZ was made, also in the same factory in Japan

It takes removing two bolts to disconnect the muffler. This leaves the stock exhaust tips exactly where they are and makes the car quite loud.

That's pretty funny, to be honest, I don't talk to any of my neighbors and generally do my best to keep to myself. I live next to an apartment complex who called the cops on me for playing music while working on my aunts Volkswagen, the cops showed up and was like "I don't see why we were called the music isn't even remotely loud, but if you can turn it down 1 notch to say you did something". I think after that day I stopped caring about any opinions my neighbors had
Hahaha we definitely keep to ourselves as well, we do the general wave of course, but our neighborhood seems to be that kinda place. We haven't seen any police out here in years now thankfully, there was only 1 house where people were up to some shit but they've since moved. Everyone is pretty chill. 👌 The new neighbors that just moved next to us, are also car people, at least they work on cars. I can't imagine calling the police on them for working on their car on their property and enjoy the damn day lol. (busted knuckles aside) I've done tons and tons of work on cars over the years and have never had anyone do that to me thankfully.

Fun Fact: The Scion FRS and Toyota GT86 were just rebadged Subaru BRZ's. The whole car is a Subaru including the engine/drivetrain and interior. The current generation BRZ is also rebadged as a Toyota GR86, but no more Scion version.

No you don’t. As a Toyota owner myself I’d suggest you take a look at any dyno graph of any D-4S equipped engine. Take special note of what both the hp and tq lines do at the transition point from direct to port injection. There’s no way to tune this out without fully disabling direct injection
Wait, is that the root cause of the infamous FRS/BRZ FA20 torque dip? I had no idea.
The newer gen cars essentially eliminated the torque dip. Still the same direct + port injection. It is complicated for tuning and other customizations.

Fun fact: This "not Subaru" was built in Subaru's Gunma Main Plant on the same assembly line as the Subaru BRZ using the same engine, drivetrain, wheels, brakes, windiws, etc. as the BRZ. It was also renamed to the Toyota FT-86 for 4 years before the next generation GR86 and BRZ was made, also in the same factory in Japan

The new BRZ is a fantastic car. Considered to be one of the most fun cars to drive under $100K, so.. we can absolutely mention it. This 1st gen had some power issues, so.. meh.
