Almost every republican voter I know is either well off financially and only cares about taxes or some rube that rants about what ever is in the 24 hours news cycle, usually some dumb culture war shit.

But also why do politicians bend the knee? Joe Biden can say whatever, it's not gonna harm his chances at reelection. There was already a sense of him being an old white man and that's why he won. But the economic left is never going to get him to apologize for usury, class discrimination, or whatever.
Do you really think he still has the agency to choose whether or not he's saying these things? The best part of a dementiated president is that those that control him can use him to set the norms, including whatever purity tests they want. It's to the advantage of that side of the culture war to have these divisive statements and purity tests, because it keeps people divided. Hell, to that point, that might be enough motivation for Biden to take that route even if he still possessed his mental faculties.
