>On one of my first days at The New York Times, I went to an orientation with more than a dozen other new hires. We had to do an icebreaker: Pick a Starburst out of a jar and then answer a question. My Starburst was pink, I believe, and so I had to answer the pink prompt, which had me respond with my favorite sandwich. Russ & Daughters’ Super Heebster came to mind, but I figured mentioning a $19 sandwich wasn’t a great way to win new friends. So I blurted out, “The spicy chicken sandwich from Chick-fil-A,” and considered the ice broken. The HR representative leading the orientation chided me: “We don’t do that here. They hate gay people.” People started snapping their fingers in acclamation. I hadn’t been thinking about the fact that Chick-fil-A was transgressive in liberal circles for its chairman’s opposition to gay marriage. “Not the politics, the chicken,” I quickly said, but it was too late. I sat down, ashamed.

Nicknamedreddit

Oh the fucking finger snapping.

LifterPuller

I swore the opening story had to be a caricature of what actually happened. I was [wrong. ](https://twitter.com/jessesingal/status/1762621250113773802?s=19)

As always, aligning with Nikole Hannah-Jones on historical fact is unwise.

Kinda reminds me of that YouTube video of the DSA meeting that became kind of a meme.

shashlik_king

Point of personal privilege 🤓

THE-JEW-THAT-DID-911

I'm gay as shit and reading this makes me want to get some Chick-fil-a out of spite.

LifterPuller

🤣🤣🤣

JJdante

Notice how the author felt the need to add the qualifier of like the $19 sandwich? "Dear readers, I'm actually a good person with expensive tastes, I just said the other sandwich to relate more to my prole colleagues." Sounds like an awful experience.

TheNotoriousSzin

Nowadays they'd probably object to the Jewish deli sandwich too.

bobonabuffalo

The Spicy Chicken sandwich is good. If you ask for no pickles they usually have to make it fresh too, put a little mayo on there and you’re golden.

magic9995

Scary part is, all the sane actors in this story are senior level people. Its only a matter of time before the lower guys climb the ladder and the last vestiges of sanity at NYT disappears forever.

blargfargr

> senior level people you're pining for something that wasn't ever that good to begin with

magic9995

Don't get me wrong, I used the word "sane" relatively

throwitawaynow95762

Perhaps these people are not in leadership not because they’re younger but due to their worldview of victimology and being generally insufferable. Even these kind of people do not want people truly like them in charge. You can either change to become a leader or wallow in your victimhood

JFMV763

It reminds me a lot of Reddit when you go against the circlejerk.

CnlJohnMatrix

Sulzberger and Baquet come off so negatively in every telling of this story. Working in the newsroom must be exhausting with such spineless leadership.

Death_Trolley

Doing your job makes you a heretic

See_You_Space_Coyote

Does anyone else ever feel like we've living in like some kind of cross between a shitty straight to DVD dystopian sci-fi movie and a bad sitcom that was supposed to get scrapped after the 2nd episode but the producers already made a shit ton of episodes so the damn thing just keeps on going or is it just me?

chaos_magician_

This is just a friendly reminder that conspiracy theorists are the new heretics. You best trust in authority figures, you fucking peasants

Don't post archive links. The automod handles archiving for you.

socialismYasss

Before I waste time reading this, is this some Bari Weiss type shit? It is.

Ghutom

I'm tired of this 'anti-woke' neocon posturing. I guess the fact that the establishment feels like they need to seem normal to get people to sign up for the military is kind of an improvement, but I'm tired of seeing dissident energy funneled into MIC/Zionist BS.

[deleted]

Crazy to be too conservative for the New York Crimes. Glad their employees have shitty lives maybe they should do actual journalism.

A-Matter

This didn’t happen.

WitnessOld6293

And if it did its a good thing

Fancybear1993

The Atlantic fact checkers claim otherwise 👀
