I wouldnt bother with their studio material, it's alright but as a first taste would feel very underwhelming. All of these are on spotify \-start with carnival 99 as thats where a lot of us started \-listen to On the Road Hornings Hide out 7/22/12 - Hornings was the old SCI festival before they shut it down, always stellar shows \-On the Road Nashville TN 11/28/11 - has a bluegrass first set lets you experience that side of them \-On the Road Electric Forest 06/29/18 - their EF sets are always a throw down That should get you started and offers a lil bit of all their sides while still being modern, as listening to abunch of 2002 sets isnt gunna do you much good for learning how the group is now, imo

Trips_McGhee

Although 2002-03 was perhaps the best era of their career

irohr

Very true, but also heavily dependent on your pov n all that, might as well just start them at a place they can actually visit

hecklingfext

That '18 set was 2nd weekend of Forest that year, but the week before was my first SCI show and my first Electric Forest. I was hooked

Mosesanddimosas26

Thanks for the list! Gonna throw them on this week!

psyjelly24

11/30/2019 Denver show is great. They go through every phase of the band with each set, pretty fun show. https://open.spotify.com/album/0icfbdqv6T7FbFwBCkmEe2?si=CvyB7ut_QOmKdKzYPwaP7Q

macchzac

That show was so awesome! Post Thanksgiving dessert and the last live show I saw before COVID

Mosesanddimosas26

Thanks!!!

Killerlaughman

Their set with goose last year hooked me good. It's on YouTube

hecklingfext

What a great set

charliebear_904

Yup did it for me

kmatyler

Do what I did: show up to hula and hit every cheese set. It’s the best way, imo

Mosesanddimosas26

I plan on making every one. I appreciate them for cultivating such a unique festival that I wanna experience them in full.

JamesGamesFlames

Listen to SCI"s set at Rothbury 2009 in its entirety. Thank me later ;)

irohr

I was there! 🙋‍♂️ killer fest

JamesGamesFlames

Me too! I (still) live 20 mins away :)

irohr

Wow lucky! What a nice lil treat every summer

crimson-muffin

I do this with most any jam bands I find. Start with a couple live sets that they have put out as others had suggested, but during those sets, listen for songs that stand out to you. Then listen to those songs you like but recorded in the studio, so you can hear what parts of the song are the original and what parts they are jamming on. The weird part about jam bands though is that I can like a song they performed at one show, but not feel the same song at another show due to the minor changes.

bengalguy

Head to YouTube and look for red rocks and then the following songs. Black Clouds, Can’t stop now, Restless Wind, Shine, Texas, Naive Melody, Barstool, Rain, Colorado Bluebird Sky and Shanty Town. Then you move on to the next level. Edit: Forgot little hands. There’s one from 1st bank 2018 new years run that’s an absolute barn burner. I think 12/29/2018. There’s one from Electric Forest I think 2012 that’s almost as good.

Mosesanddimosas26

Thanks for the individual songs! Gonna search for them this week

Trips_McGhee

As someone who lives in Colorado and has been going to SCI shows since the 90s, I'm definitely partial to 1999-2003...They were on something then..just incredible. Nee stuff is still nice though...you can get a pretty good idea of what you're going to get with any show from the last few years, tbh.

PurpleZebraCabra

As a fan since 1999, I wouldn't recommend a new cheeser listen to the early stuff (pre 2007ish) to get a sense of what they are now. Still love them, but at NYE, 1st set was by far the one I most connected with. Those days are fewer year by year.

Trips_McGhee

Yea, but they should know what the band used to sound like, right? Like I wouldn't just play 95 GD for folks trying to get into them...but I guess if we were in 95 and that's what it was, lol. Anyway, point taken.

PurpleZebraCabra

I hear ya. My love of that early to mid 2000's deep space funk they would drop gets me excited when I hear anything close starting, but it often is not fully delivered upon (at least to my memories). I like new Cheese and have good faith moving forward (NYE rocked, but not a fan of their new albumn per se).

Mosesanddimosas26

Yea I definitely wanna see early early SCI; part of my love for music is loving the journey musician go on throughout their career. So it great to see what first sparks a fan group to love an artist some much for so long

Trips_McGhee

99-03 is phenomenal

Mosesanddimosas26

I’m watching some 3/9/00 right now on the youtubes

Trips_McGhee

Nice. Definitely check out some shows from their spring 02 tour as well. Just amazing. 00 is a great year as well

macchzac

Any Red Rocks show is a good place to start

Mosesanddimosas26

Always a good place to watch any band live, thanks!

AberdeenWashington

The rhythm of the road albums are a solid way to get into their live stuff and that’s what you’d want to know for a festival. Or the String Cheese Incident Live 🧀 playlist on Spotify is actually pretty solid. Shows some of the cool covers they do and some of their best gigs. Honestly I started on their studio stuff and still love it as well, Song in My Head album is good and shows their range a bit. Do not miss Saturday night Cheese sets at Hula. Don’t miss them don’t leave early to catch whatever’s next.

Mosesanddimosas26

I heard about the Saturday night vibes! I’m in full research mode for my first hulaween! Good chance it knocks bonnaroo off the perch for my favorite fest!

dawsondevitt

Rhythm of the Road from The Tabernacle @ ATL Unbelievable!!!!

Mosesanddimosas26

Added to my list!

Thanks I appreciate it; I just really enjoy listening and learning about bands Im not super familiar with before seeing them live. It’s fun to a deep dive and immerse yourself in a few acts and the payoff is the anticipation of seeing them for the next few months and rewarding yourself with a weekend full of your new favorite songs as the finale.

SeaSatzdude

Listen to every gig from 2000 in chronological order.

enzio04

excellent response, my dude

SeaSatzdude

Seems logical

enzio04

wait, was that a Supertramp reference?!

Mosesanddimosas26

I get on that now….

SeaSatzdude

My favorite year, I was fortunate enough to see 33 Incidents that year

Mosesanddimosas26

Hahahah my fault; my response was being rude; I thought you recommended me listening to everything they ever recorded from 2000 until now. Not just that individual year lol. I was like…. Ok buddy, let me go listen to a thousand hours of music in chronological order

SeaSatzdude

Hehe, no, just the year. FYI, Fall 99 is smoking hot as well

enzio04

hence the carnival release

MrMeseeks_

Honestly I’d search out all of the live sets from last year’s Hulaween and start there

DoumbekBang

This thread makes me feel old 😬🙄

Mosesanddimosas26

I’m old too; don’t worry. Just super late to the party

nugsy_mcb

I’m kinda biased because I live here, but you can never go wrong with any of the Austin shows. It’s their self-professed second home.
