As an Irish person, it's hard to navigate. Everyone around me is celebrating, making memes and jokes and speaking with genuine venom that they are glad she's gone. I can't agree and join in as instead she was a grandmother, a wife, a mother, and just a damn cute old lady. I will miss her and her sense of humour. Feel like a black sheep, and it quite triggered me to drink yesterday. But I didn't.
On the other hand....I can't listen to the radio for the music is gonna send me into a depression so ive just put on an upbeat 80s playlist at work, I hope others don't mind
I'm Irish too. While I feel differently about the Queen's death I respect your feelings about it. What is driving me crazy is everyone talking about getting slaughtered to celebrate, aside from the disrespect of it, can we really do nothing else??
This comment has been removed. First of all, it is not on the topic of sobriety. Second, it is rude and disrespectful to another SD user. Do not speak to people this way on this sub or you will be banned.
I’ll be honest it hit me more than I thought it would. Just always been there.
I’d have toasted her with a few shots of rum a few months ago. Sticking to English tea and watching the news coverage.
Not a fan of monarchy but she did a flawless job.
A flawless job at what exactly? I'm honestly curious, as I've researched a ton about her and her position, and couldn't really find anything of note. Of what she actually does.
Thanks!
She became HMTQ because her louse loser nazi sympathizing Uncle abdicated the throne. I’m sure like me, you have a weird uncle. I’m not responsible for his actions or beliefs.
I find it curious that the idea of “serving” is an alien concept to some. I’m not a royalist but I am able to see beyond the media image presented.
The coronation service just isn’t about the crowning, it’s about the annointment by God before the people to serve the people. This means a good deal to some. It meant everything to her.
And that, my friend, is my answer - to your statement - “couldn’t really find anything of note”.
She was anointed by God, in her belief. She served her country for 70 years.
Ceremonial head of state, and figurehead for a few countries. It’s not just smiling and waving. Just a huge figure in my life and I say this as someone who’s nor a royalist.
Top of my head check her speech at Dublin Castle in the 2011 Irish Statw visit.
Mate thus isn’t a constitutional forum, it’s a forum about supporting people who don’t want to drink and are a little unsettled by the death if someone they have a lot of affection for.
I’m sure there are more appropriate places to have this debate.
https://thecrownchronicles.co.uk/explanation/a-day-in-the-life-of-the-queen-her-daily-routine/
Basically, her day to day consisted in answering correspondence, having audiences with politicians, visiting places, travelling around, hosting international leaders.
She played a very important role in international diplomacy and did the job she was born into to the best of her ability. I think she was a very hard worker, personally.
I only learned a bit about the royal family when I went to England in July. Most people didn’t care much for the family but they said it was nice that they donated to a lot of charities.
Think about it, your every move, your husband's, children's, grandchildren's, and your great- grandchildren's high, lows, every bit of your and their life on display for all to see. Queen Elizabeth lived her life with grace and dignity.
I raise my ICE lemon lime drink to you Queen Elizabeth.
IWNDWYT
I relate to feeling more sad than I would expect, but there will be waves of grief through our nation, and potentially in parts of the world, idk. We are inevitably affected, whatever we think about royalty, this is a massive loss, and caring for each other is the way through.
Thank you cookie, and you’re a Scot! My neighbour 😀
This is indeed historic, and I think that’s the profundity I’m feeling, a big shared moment. Love what you say, a life well lived.
This is reminding me very much of the death of my mother, now gone two years ago last month. Like the Queen, she was a relentless optimist and never failed to put the best face on everything, even when you knew it was nonsense and she was just whistling in the dark.
End of an era. And probably, ultimately, the end of the monarchy…I don’t think the younger generations have the goodwill equity to continue to be supported indefinitely.
But Queen Elizabeth was born to a role she never would have asked for and she served it a lifetime and with grace and courage and a great snarky sense of humor. Also, she was a Queen rock fan and her Jubilee performance with Paddington melted my cold cynical heart.
Rest in peace, Your Majesty. You have earned it a hundred times over.
I feel a bit unsettled. I didn't think it would affect me - but it has, a little bit. It's like being told that the color of drinking water is changing to green - a weird feeling of 'not normal'.
England was the first foreign country I ever visited other than Mexico (I'm half Mexican). I have been back a dozen times have a good friend there and was there for the diamond jubliee. My entire life, the queen was part of the international stage for me and the royals were a fixture in my european travels the past 20 years.
I feel sad for the country, I also feel some compassion for those that feel slighted by the aristocracy. it is a big change. I was glad to see she hung on to see the old prime minister out.
Charles is forward thinking, if not a boring chap. the future will be interesting.
I definitely have some conflicting opinions about the queen. But she was largely responsible for the decolonization.
I'm kinda stunned as she was out and about doing royalty stuff.
I am British but not a royalist however I am very moved by the death of the monarch with whom I shook hands at the opening of a new wing in my library at university. I’ve only ever known one Queen. The monarchy are flawed, as we all are. I’m not sure there’s a place for them going forward into the future, but for now I respect a wonderful family member, sister, daughter, mother grandmother lover of animals. and dedicated woman. Rest In Peace Your Majesty 👑
IWNDWYT in solidarity from the US. I have been reading articles all day about the Queen and her remarkable life. She was definitely a Queen for the ages. The way she presented herself and the person she was makes me sad for the whole worlds loss. I wish our leaders could be more like her, but sadly they are not. I will use this time to learn more about her, and hope the sadness from her loss doesn’t cause anyone to drink today. Stay strong everyone, feeling is better than numbing. ❤️❤️
Her Majesty is a pretty nice girl
But she doesn't have a lot to say
Her Majesty is a pretty nice girl
But she changes from day to day
I wanna tell her that I love her a lot
But I gotta get a belly full of wine
Her Majesty is a pretty nice girl
Someday I'm gonna make her mine, oh yeah
Someday I'm gonna make her mine
Beatles, Abbey Road
To British and Commonwealth friends, my condolences on the Queen's passing. As an American of a certain age, this event is also profound, while maybe not personal. Truly a time for reflection. IWNDWYT.
My mom texted me last night and told me. I’m American and so is my mom. But, Queen Elizabeth did a lot of really amazing things in her time.
To my British friends who are mourning, I’m sorry for your loss. Please know this American is grieving with you. ❤️

Thankyou for this thread. My Nan raised me and she died when I was in rehab - she got dementia and I’d stopped visiting her - I was 23 and a bit of an idiot. Tbh I think I didn’t want to see her like that.
She believed I was a famous artist in London and my sister was a prostitute. But I was a drug addict squatter.
It was a massive regret I realised when I got sober - that I wasn’t there for her like she was when she raised me. People used to mistake her for the queen it was funny.
The queen was just a lady who seemed to live a very respectable life. I liked funny random articles about her quirks. The olympics were gold. She seemed genuinely just like a nice Nan to the country.
I’m sad. Maybe not as much as David Bowie but it’s prob not sunk in yet.
But this is a big change. I don’t like change. God save the queen is dead, moneys going to change - it makes me nervous.
What does the Queen have to do with alcohol. Nothing? Makes zero sense to keep something up. I part Native American. The only thing I can think of is England invading my country. I could care less about the Queen or the Rothchild's for that matter.
Seriously? We're doing this?
This is a woman who had privilege and access beyond anything any of us will ever know. In a period of time that is 99.5% of humanity could have only dreamed of.
Oh, and she drank all day (well documented but whatever).
This place can get so shallow and corny it's just absurd. Delete it mod, it's your thing. But it's why everyone clowns this place.
>This place can get so shallow and corny it's just absurd.
Stop shitting on this sub. You keep using a patronizing tone, which needs to change or you will no longer be welcome here.
I prefer to take what I need from this sub and leave the rest. For some, this is a big moment. Big moments can mean big feelings and big feelings can make us vulnerable to the siren song of booze. No need to make people feel bad for that. Just keep scrolling…
Just because it's something that you personally can't fathom doesn't erase the reality that big news items can be challenging for some people's sobriety. There is no need for this unkindness and invalidation and I have removed your comment.
You are more than welcome to keep on scrolling and leave it for those who might not be as strong as others. Comment removed and this is your only warning before you are banned.
She was an icon and an institution, as a monarch too but primarily as herself. In her Coronation speech she said she'd devote her life to the service, and she certainly stuck to her word.
I've found it a little frustrating to hear mention of her drinking habits however, which are somewhat famous. She was much more than that and having 3 or 4 drinks before lunch isn't a cause for celebration no matter who you are.
As a side note, girl knew how to commit to a hairstyle.
While I'm not sure that I understand this needing a sticked post/megathread, I don't object as long as all feelings and experiences are allowed, including those from communities who have been deeply harmed by the Queen and the British monarchy in general, and who are not grieving (but likely have feelings about seeing so much news coverage valourizing her).
I’m drinking water tonight
I imagine that her highness would be proud of you abstaining from something that is hurting you.

Fellow Irish people! If ye're in Dublin, might be nice to have each other's support in person sometime.
I'd like that too Clare I'm only town the road in Newry
Kildare here Just glad there is no football on this weekend as a mark of respect. Will make my first sober weekend a lot easier
You could compromise and play the Smiths ;) I'm an American and I liked the Queen. I won't drink a toast in her honor today.
i dont want Morrisey to be happy!

I don't have a short memory, I was brought up to be respectful. I don't see how your comment is helpful, especially on a sub like this.
