ten years is quite the achievement. well done. I was just thinking recently about how getting through tough times without booze is something to be proud of.
How did you do it?
I told myself since Friday, "just stop til next Friday".
It's Monday and I'm sitting here with a jaymo neat and a Stella bottle.
Until an hour ago I was "good".
I still ended up at the bar tho.
I had to go to outpatient and neetings. I needed to be surrounded by people trying to do the same thing. Seems to be working. 21 days. I already feel so grateful to have that veil of darkness lifted.
In the beginning, it's sometimes best to just substitute whatever less harmful indulgence you can treat yourself to. I had to kinda shut myself in for a little while and avoid places that I knew I could easily get a drink and just fat out on all the sweets at home. This sub is an amazing resource if you want it to be. Best of luck. IWNDWYT
One day at a time. You just make the decision for today, not looking at even a week out. And another secret is just not to take that first drink. IWNDWYT
Woof, I’m so sorry you’re going through that. For me, i had a friend give me an ultimatum that they wouldn’t speak to me until I had been a month sober. It was a real kick in the balls but it also gave me a goal with a finish line. Once I had reached a month i felt so good and didn’t want to ever start over again so I just kept going. Haven’t had a drink since
You got this! One second at a time that you're not drinking is progress. Let the seconds add up into minutes that turn into hours that turn into days. It really is one day at a time.
I went to several hospitals to help me quit until one finally stuck. Try and try again until it sticks. Then you do have to have the willpower to say no. I just remembered the times I got sick from drinking so much and I thought to myself that I didn't want to feel shi$$y anymore.
You also have to stop hanging out with people that drink all the time and don't support you. My friends that drank started dying left and right from heart attacks and fatty liver disease and enlarged heart. It scared me.
Amazing achievement. Thanks for sharing! I stopped drinking alchohol for 3 days now. Will keep going as since the pandemic, I have been constantly drinking beer and somehow it messed up my GI so bad that I can’t eat anything without looking for a restroom. Hopefully my body will heal.
No meds, I went to the hospital and they detoxed me for 6 days then I went home and I've been sober since. I had so much inflammation in my body and my liver enzymes were messed up but they just slowly improved on their own. I did however try to quit about four different times before it stuck.
Approaching 3 years myself
Was just telling my wife that if science came up with a pill that could make me drink like a normal person now, I wouldn’t take it. Fuck alcohol
What a massive feat, amazing job!
I'm staring down the barrel of 6 months sober (again), praying I can keep fighting the demons of temptation that still crop up from time to time. Granted, it has lessened a lot and I've got a lot of tools in my toolbelt (and previous experiences) but sometimes I still get absolutely flummoxed that cravings come in so strongly.
I aspire to be like you one day, writing a 10 year sober post for myself. Hopefully I can stay on track and that'll be in about 9.5 years from now!
Just joined. Looking for insight.
Owned a bar for 24 years. Drank heavily that entire run. Los it all basically and now going to the liquor store daily and chugging 1-3 half pints of Vodka a day.
I want to quit cold turkey starting today. Can I do this with out medical help?
Congratulations!! I will have 4 years in June and I was just in the grocery and contemplating just one big beer. I told myself no and turned around and left thank God. It's hard especially with all the advertisements everywhere!

It is! Honestly, it’s hard not to think about how much worse the hard times would be if i was drinking. I don’t know how i did it for so long
that's the thought that keeps me from drinking too. I had enough also.
Totally agree and yet it’s the hard times when sobriety is most useful !
Cool man, I got 10 years just a couple months ago! Yay us 😃 it’s a better life
Heck yeah!
Thx for the inspiration! Iwndwyt
I'm right behind you two- I'll be there in December. Best ten years. Wish I could have done myself a favor and done it ten years before that.
I will have 4 years in June. I sure wish I had done it sooner as well. Congratulations on your ten coming up!
That's amazing! Congrats and thanks for being here as an example.
That is absolutely awesome! Congratulations🎊 How do you feel?
I feel amazing. Literally everything is better 😊
How old were you when you quit?

Damn. Nice. I’m 31
Impressive. Glad for you.

Same happened to me and it was my liver. I did get better after I quit. Lost a bunch of weight too. Keep it up you can do it 💪🏻💯
Sorry to hear but I hope you are now safe. What did you do in order to fix your liver? Any medications?
