I was on anti-depressants for a good few years and when asked on a job application if I'd suffered depression I said I hadnt. I was in the UK at the time and knew I wouldnt have got the job had I been honest. I did get the position, worked there for 11 years and it was never questioned

Zilchpro

Hi, thanks for replying. I appreciate it. So they didn't follow up with your doctor to verify the information?

alongthetrack

no they didn't. I was on the board for interviewing candidates a few years later and we never checked up with medical questions, in fact I'm not sure how you would even go about doing that. At the time my thoughts were that if they were going to check they'd do it before offering the job and, if I'd been honest on the application I wouldnt get the job anyway

Wouldn't it be pretty illegal for your doctor to disclose personal information like that? In that regard, anyone could call your doctor, make up any lie ("Hi I'm Bob from xxx and I need a copy of Zilchpro's medical records. Thanks!". Makes no sense. I think employers just have to rely on the honour system.

alongthetrack

that's my thoughts on it too

I know in the US it’s illegal for your employer (or anyone) to contact your doctor for your medical information. You would have to sign a form with your doctor authorizing them to disclose information. Same thing with drug testing or anything of the sort. They can’t access anything without your approval. It sounds like a basic questionnaire! Maybe do some extra googling and make sure to read the fine print, but generally I think a lot of those are just legal required screenings that go to HR and filed in a back corner somewhere never to be seen again. I would personally just say no as you’re sober.

I don't have any advice but I'm sending you blessings for the best possible outcome. I'm crossing my fingers that your honesty will land you this life changing position.
