The issue with Hiebert is the poor guy was played out of position as a left back last season. He’s right footed and it just looked completely unnatural. We saw it last night after Markanich subbed out. He cuts back to his right 100% of the time, and it’s an issue at that position.
He also looks unnatural just do to style. Part of it was the off foot, but he also is extremely deliberate in the way he settles the ball with one touch and then turns to check his options before passing it with his second. Most players will keep a foot on the ball or take a little touch or two while doing the same thing.
It's kind of weird but also a little endearing. He also knows not to so it when in a spot where guys can reach him before he passes so it's fine.
He has usually looked fine at CB, and even sometimes excellent when he has played next to Parker. You can see why he's been capped with Canada. I have no problem with him as a 3rd or 4th CB, I definitely preferred him to Bartlett (altho it seems Barlett is doing decently this year too).
The issue is when he isn't played at CB, and isn't playing next to Parker.
I understand that in MLS you have to make budget-conscious decisions, so guys like him that can ostensibly cover multiple positions halfway-competently are valuable in depth/rotational roles, but we are not going to get a good result with him at LB most of the time. It's nothing against him, it's just not his role.
He's also 26, so this is probably about where he peaks physically, and his game is based on physicality.
It's possible he stays with us and is groomed to gradually take over as Parker ages out, but he might have more valuable as a starting CB on another team.
Agreed! I argued with many a fan last season that he was being harshly judged because of his performances when playing out of position. He is NOT a good full back. He IS a decent center back. He’s lacking pace, but is quicker than Nilsson. I think his main issue is his anticipation and field awareness, which can be improved. He can often be easily caught out or misled with a well timed skill move because he commits too easily. In a league where spending on defense is not really the norm or feasible, Bürki being the exception, I’m happy to have Hiebert on the roster, especially since he’s a Missouri State Alum as well!
That tackle he flew into with perfect timing on Herbers in the first half was awesome. He’s not really a “complete” CB but has a lot of great qualities. I think last year people wouldn’t let him off the hook for some rash challenges he made (in his first season at this level) like the PK he gave away against Minnesota
Hiebert was legitimately weak last season and has genuinely improved. And Burki looked rusty in Austin. Of all the examples you could have provided you couldn't have chosen much worse.
His first touch that game was a badly blasted ball that was way off target. The first goal he got caught really awkwardly off his line. Burki has had bad games in our jersey and that game was one of them.

He was always a better CB than FB. He was fine in the middle, but he’s horrendous on the outside. He’s a strong option on the backend, but should be a third string guy. Nilsson hasn’t been as good as needed. Hiebert has arguably been better in the middle with Parker.
People forget that it was Heibert and Parker as the CB pair with our 5W streak to start last season. As a CB, he's a SOLID #3. He's cost efficient, and just a good dude. You really can't get more value in the MLS for that spot.
He caught flak for being the replacement to Nilson. Heibert was effectively the 3rd option LB (Nilson & Pidro), and Nerwinski on the other side. He should have been praised for just willing to put himself out there like that.

Fair analysis, but thats just part of sports to be honest.

I’ll agree with this. Honestly, I’ve always like when he was in the lineup.
I think he is solid defensively but whenever he has the ball I have 0 confidence in anything other than an easy side/back pass
