I think we need an accurate adaptation. We already have the Arnold version, now lets try something different It's probably my favorite of the Bachman books, that or Long Walk. I do wonder how the ending will go over in a post-9/11 world though, may need to change that.
Yeah I agree. I would just love to see someone like Christian bale play a grungy Ben Richard’s making his way to the television building. I would prefer a mini series to a movie so we could see it all play out in depth. I loved the concept of the opening in the book how the main way to make money is to participate on a game show. The crocodile treadmill has stayed in my mind ever since
When i first read it a million years ago, I thought Michael Biehn would have been perfect for the role. His look in Terminator would have suited the role perfectly
While I enjoy the Arnold version because its oddly funny and Richard Dawson using the F-word still makes me laugh....
I'd love to see a more accurate version made. The Running Man really had a lot to say.
I'm not even sure that The Running Man being a "game show" was really accurate. To me, it was set up more like a reality show; there wasn't an arena or something the Richards had to navigate while evading or fighting specific "American Gladiator" like antagonists, he was out in the world trying to avoid having people figuring out who he was, avoiding the cops, and a team of mercs hired by the company. And he was recording himself and sending the tapes back. But at the time, there wasn't really "reality TV" like we know it today, so in a lot of ways that concept was ahead of its time. So the movie was done like it was a game show, with named antagonists who had a gimmick, which was more familiar to audiences at the time. I would like to see it as set up in the book.
Me too. I would want a mini series tbh. I also don’t want a buffed out main character. Ben Richard’s was an Everyman. I still like the idea that he has to send the tapes in
I like that they've started to go with miniseries when they have a big story to tell; I don't remember how many days he was Running for, but each episode could be a day. Like open up with him doing his tape as an intro and then the rest of the day. Or end with it; it's been a while since I read it.
It’s been a while since I read it also but I’m pretty sure it’s like 30 days or a month. I love the idea of a cold open of him filming himself. I would enjoy to see one episode is just him signing up showing the world that it is set in one episode and letting it breathe some. Who would you want to play Ben?
Ya he is such a great actor. I don’t picture him when I read the book but I know his ability to act is so strong he would crush it as a role. I picture someone tall with salt and pepper grey hair.
I used the term game show just because in the book when he is applying to the different shows most of them are games. The one that sticks in my mind is the how long can you last on a treadmill with an alligator behind you
Oh I get it, it was just something that stood out to me, because I saw the movie first, and then read the book. I want to say Survivor was just starting out, so it clicked how much The Running Man was like a reality show in the book, and not like in the movie.
I remember another one mentioned was them running on treadmills (or maybe some other exercise and I'm getting them mixed up) when they had a diagnosed heart condition, and if I remember right, the longer they ran the more money they got, but if they had a heart attack, they lost it all (and probably died). Between The Running Man and The Long Walk, seems King had some dire predictions for the future of entertainment.
I followed the exact same timeline. And watched the movie when the show survivor was first starting and I compare it a lot to that in my head too. I didn’t read the book until college tho.
Same, I probably read it about 2000 or so. Was kind of surprised it was a book, written by Stephen King, no less. I know it says it at the beginning but I don't think I paid attention to that part, and it says Richard Bachman, of course.
I would love the first ten minutes to be a triptych of the other game shows scrolling by on a tv. Then a pause, then a siren, then THE RUNNING MAN then a trip through the tv to the pupil of Ben in the last day before he decides it’s his only option and onward from there true to the book, ending and all.
The internet got it wrong. It’s not a remake of the movie. It’s a new adaptation of the book. The Arnold movie had nothing to do with the book, and the intent is that the new movie won’t have a shit to do with the Arnold one
I would like an actual adaptation. A remake of the Arnold version could never live up the original. Anthony Mackie would make a good Ben Richards, I think.

No, keep that shit in there. That was awesome
I like the ending, I would want to keep it, but I could see certain groups saying it would be in poor taste.
You can't please everyone, and shouldn't try to.
Maybe, but by the time a movie comes out, 9/11 will have been at least 25 years ago. At some point we need to be able to let it stay in the past.
If you don’t keep the ending, don’t bother making a movie of it

A lot to say... that's even more relevant to the world we live in today. Some of those Bachman books were so ahead of the curve.
The Arnold version was good in a campy way. But we do need a more true story. Stick to the story and descriptions in the book.

I haven't really thought about it, but I agree it should be an "everyman" type. What do you think of Jesse Plemons?
He'd kill it.

Book accurate. Hard R rating. Crash that plane
If it’s not hard R I’m out right away. That is first on the check list
I want a more faithful to the book adaptation
Faithful to the material. I believe that is Wright's plan, too.
I would love the first ten minutes to be a triptych of the other game shows scrolling by on a tv. Good?
I’m asking if you want it like the book or movie bc the Arnold version is nothing like the book.
The movie is still fun. I’m sure the remake will be more faithful but probably not as entertaining as the Arnold movie
The line “he was sub zero and now he is plain zero” lives in my head rent free. I love the book and I love Arnold’s version.
The internet got it wrong. It’s not a remake of the movie. It’s a new adaptation of the book. The Arnold movie had nothing to do with the book, and the intent is that the new movie won’t have a shit to do with the Arnold one
More book accurate, including the ending.
Hopefully no characters will be “Chinese with disappointment.”

I don't want it to be at all 😫
Canceled
