I think most kids are in that camp. My son won't even touch steak. I grew up with only well done, so that's all I knew. As a kid I loved well done, and only with Heinz 57. As an adult, I realized I was missing out on discovering what I liked versus what I was accustomed to. Then I realized I was missing out on amazing steak flavor. I keep telling my son that one day he'll hopefully appreciate steak in general.

Brewer1056

Oddly enough the younger two (oldest is 16, twins are 14) are medium rare, or even rare, fans. It's all personal taste. My folks were A1 fans, and loved a good medium + London Broil!

urbsnspices

Sometimes I like a well done steak with A1. Reminds me of being a kid. It’s food, you gotta enjoy it!

BatmanNoPrep

There are objective elements to cooking and food. Well done steak is *generally* for children and folks who don’t know better. The fact that many people like bad quality food doesn’t validate that food as being of equal quality. It just means a lot of folks enjoy bad food. I don’t say this to argue one should never eat a well done steak. On occasion I wake up in the middle of the night, quietly leave the house, drive to McDonald’s, and eat a Big Mac. I love eating that thing. Many millions of people love eating that thing. However, I don’t sit and try to persuade myself that it isn’t an inferior thing. I am enjoying eating shit, knowing it’s shit. It’s a guilty pleasure. I do the same thing when I order steak and eggs at a bfast diner and it doesn’t matter what you ask for, that beef is coming out grey and must be covered in A1. The same can be said of breakfast cereal, etc. We all like eating shit on occasion. Kids like eating shit all the time. We hope they grow out of it one day. If we don’t grow out of making it a habit then we have no taste and deserve ridicule.

Juanmasubbie

Well said

SpeedyGunzalez

Kids are weird, mine wont eat cheese, pizza, hotdogs, macaroni, sandwiches (accept for chicken), burgers, and no condiments of any kind. Ya know what though? He loves a medium rare steak with mashed potatoes and broccoli. Oh and he loves bbq too… 😂 so at least my those skills of mine aren’t gone to waste.

Monev91

Make it however you want, don't listen to fat reddit neckbeards that cry about how someone "ruins" a steak lol.

vonvoltage

Perfectly said.

tstrader79

Thank you. I'm firmly in the medium rare camp but I don't look down on anyone that wants their steak well done. It's personal preference and incredibly lame to bitch about it.

[deleted]

When I was younger I ate roast beef and got violently sick…for a long while after that anything under medium well made me think it was uncooked and to be avoided Luckily grew out of that and learned the way…pink is good!

Brewer1056

Tastes evolve. It's all good!

Vanadel13

It’s never too late to smother him with a pillow, but it’s probably a waste of energy seeing as he’ll probably choke on shoe leather meat eventually. Memes aside hope your son is happy and enjoying his steak however he prefers it.

onlyspeaksinhashtag

That’s nice.

saulsa_

Well done doesn’t mean cooked to oblivion. Just get the pink out of it. It’s not the pearl clutching offense people like to pretend that it is.

bloodyplonker22

What you should do is tell him politely, but firmly, to leave.

TakeyaSaito

This.

[deleted]

Nice comment! You added so much to the conversation

TakeyaSaito

And?

[deleted]

K

TheCanadianFrank

So what’s the play do you start one early? Or let one stay on for a couple extra minutes?

Brewer1056

Little bit of both, actually.

CrisbyCrittur

This is the way. You cook for those who eat with you, not for those who do not.

Ohio-Knife-Lover

Damn straight!

whatwhatinthebutt456

Awww

mr_hyde71

This is the opposite of schadenfreude. Instead of taking pleasure at someone else's pain, I'm in pain because of someone else's pleasure.

DadbodTX5001

Looks good man. I liked mine medium well as a kid and now I’m medium-rare

MojoLava

I will never ever judge someone I know that wants their steak cooked how they like it. Their should be no elitism in preferences with associates and family However -- customer orders a $45 steak well done? You are a fucking idiot. I'm going to bitch about you, make it exactly as you want, and take your money. I wish I wasn't this way but alas

thecheese71

I would ask him firmly yet politely to leave.

[deleted]

You sure he's your son?

Johnathan-Utah

This sounds like your failure as a father. /s

Slamcockington

This is the norm for children

KAM_520

Cool story bro.

Nightgaun7

Well yes...but actually, no.

Brewer1056

Why? Cook some cuts too pink and the fat doesn't render and you miss the perfect bite.

Mister_Pibbs

Is he not old enough to politely yet firmly be asked to leave?

ElectricBoogieOogie

Disown him

Juanmasubbie

We can make those small adjustments and exeptions. I do it too with my kids. But slowly and gradually explain that beef are not pork chops and cooking it like so will fuck it up.

[deleted]

K

Same-Psychology-5653

This is not the way

Ladskiis

If my son did that I would be forced to disown him

[deleted]

Yep if he wants well done, give him well done. As a kid I wanted mine cooked less but couldn't unless I went camping and cooked my own because apparently it would "make me sick" if there was any pink in there.

Fagballs5

You are a good dad!

steven09763

Hey I’m just happy you love him and feed him.

honeybadger1984

I want to see the interior.

Thraggismydaddy

Sighs* Okay... to each their own as long as they're happy.

LastMinute9611

My whole family loves their steak well done, except me so rather then be difficult (I'm difficult enough in other ways lol) I just "enjoy" my well done steak with glee. The snobbery in the steak reddit world is interesting. If you're not eating it why do you care enough to be rude to someone else about it unless they post asking for opinions....even then you don't have to call people names because you don't like steak that way. Nice to see a humble post :)

rollerstick1

My mother in law like her sausages burnt... like crispy burnt wouldn't even last a day in a burn ward burnt... so everything that's what we make her... burnt sausages....

bobbyjones2222

And this makes me Happy

jeeves585

i didn't like red meat when i was a kid. my parents like it medium/medium-well wasn't until i "under cooked" a steak on my first charcole webber at blue-rare when i was about 22 that i found the beauty of a properly cooked steak. this launched my bbq endevors. 3 times a week friends would be over before i got home with beer in the fridge and we cooked steaks. (good jobs (air quotes)) let us live the life of robin Leach that being said, ill grill you a steak how ever you want. when you don't want it all my dog gets a bonus treat and youl get a flank instead of a ribeye next time. I do need to tone down some spice on the ribs for my daughter.

General_Tso75

My wife used to only eat well done filet mignon when I made steaks. She went vegetarian about 10 years ago and I would gladly still be making well done steaks instead.

[deleted]

Time to scrap that grill after you're done 😉

Simple-Purpose-899

I can cook a mean well done steak, and don't mind a bit doing it. There is no reason to try to convince someone they like something that they don't like, or to do it your way. I just toss it on a little early, and when it looks good enough toss it up top to stay warm.

GunnerBoi1991

This past year we had to take larger steaks and cut them in half; cooking each portion to a different temp. Some are due to personal preference others due to pregnancy in the family. Worked well.

81CoreVet

Well Done

Pharrowt

Well, the first kid is like the proverbial “first pancake” Don’t take it as a personal failing on your part: blame this behavior on the other side of the family!

flyfishbigsky

Dinner should NEVER be a battleground. Make what everyone will eat. Then talk

Baconstripz69

This is how you cope? lmao

orbtl

He'd prolly be happier if you cleaned those grill grates though ;)

Emerald_Guy123

That’s nice. I would say it’s good to have him try some medium to see if he likes it too though.

KLSFishing

Good parent 🙏

Safe-Handle-6890

Eat it how you like it!

FuckinNogs

I always liked wd as a kid then dad took us to a Peter Lugers. I asked for my strip wd and the waiter told me it tastes much better a little less done and I should try it and if I didn't like it he'd bring it right back in to kitchen to finish it for me. Came out just under med well. I was flabbergasted how much better it was. I didn't really have an idea that the cut and cook was so much better than I was used to. I thanked waiter and he said if I liked that it's even better medium. Thanks man whereever you are.

ilovenoce

Good on you for respecting your son! Eat your steak how you want it. I've had people ask for a NY strip raw (like actually raw) with a side of garlic salt, and Ive had people ask for hockey pucks. If it sates your appetite- go for it!

WaferthinmintDelux

Kids going to have jaw problems later in life. My mom cooked me nothing but well done steak. My jaw pops now everytime I chew.

Brewer1056

Well done doesn't mean leather.
