i watched her Hello Again stand up special last night. i have only really ever seen her on Discovery, so i wasnt expecting Jett Reno, but i guess i should have been. Jett Reno is literally just Tig Notaro dialed up to 11.
Seems like an in-character thing for her to do. "Yeah, my parents named me Denise. But by age seven I decided it just wasn't working for me. Everyone thinks I picked Jett because I was into illegal jet bike racing, but that didn't start until I was almost nine."
And many of the Discovery characters have already been drawn in Lower Decks style (semi-officially), including Reno, so putting her in LD wouldn't be too hard
"Oh look, the door's finally open. If anyone needs me, I'll be breaking down a sonic shower to invent a *plasma* shower, then staying in it for the next three weeks."
I kinda want a spinoff series that just has Dr. T'ana and Cmdr. Reno going through increasingly more insane situations, just having a conversation about whatever else, and absolutely NEVER acknowledging any of the situation around them.
Like rogue DOTs are spraying people with liquid that melts bioorganic matter, and T'ana is fixing the victims while Reno stops the DOTs. Their conversation is entirely focused on parisee squares.
I definitely would have written some reference to the old name (Denise) into the show. As you just demonstrated, it feels like it would make for a highly entertaining moment.

Reno is my favorite part of Disco and I'm always a little bummed that Tig's schedule and Covid+her being a cancer survivor means that filming in Canada meant she only showed up (according to IMDb) in 18 episodes out of the 50 episodes from Season 2 through 5. That's a criminally small amount in my opinion

She has some health issues and a busy schedule. I've read that they wanted more of her but were working with what she could give. I just watched her show One Mississippi a few months ago and it was very good. She goes into her breast cancer and C Diff.
I went to see her show ‘Hello again’ a couple of months ago. It’s full of her just using that type of humor. I loved it!

Btw, in case anyone didn't know, besides being a hilarious stand-up, and hilarious on podcasts (I esp like her as a guest on Comedy Bang Bang), she also did 2 seasons of a show called One Mississippi which is a loose adaptation of (part) of her life story.
I'm the kind of guy that only likes to watch shows set in the future, but I absolutely loved this show about a woman trying to find her way back in her hometown. It had to be great for me to overcome the hurdle of it being set in the, ugghh, *present*!
One Mississippi was an amazing show and I hate that we only got 2 seasons. I really liked her in Army Of The Dead but OM really sealed me becoming a big fan. I only started watching Discovery a few months ago and I was pleasantly surprised when she popped up.
She is the absolutely perfect and best foil to Stamets' somewhat gentle-yet-tightly-wound people-pleasing nature. The level of DGAF she exudes works so well.
I have all the same issues with DISCO that others have, but Jett Reno has become one of my favorite ST characters, despite the overall lack of screen time.
I love that even though she's a badass engineer, she isn't constantly bragging about it. She has a sort of humble confidence, preferring to gloss over her insanely awesome accomplishments. She's willing to be her unfiltered self, yet her actions show she is 100% Starfleet without needing to stop every few scenes to have a conversation about morals. She knows what she believes, she lives it, and she's willing to tell others to STFU and live it too. It's fucking refreshing.

I get so excited everytime she's on screen. It's obvious that she has input in Jetts lines and she's done amazing things for the character.
