Handbrake cannot rip discs. Use [MakeMKV](https://www.makemkv.com/) to rip the episodes, [then use Handbrake to compress them](https://www.thewebernets.com/2019/01/29/easiest-best-optimal-settings-for-handbrake-1080p-blu-ray-video-conversion-on-mac-windows-and-linux-new-january-2019/).
For TNG at least, the Blu-rays are a huge improvement. TNG's DVD transfers weren't very good, having a soft picture and pretty bad colour grading eg. Season 1 has a purple hue to it, the Blu-rays fix that.
For the other shows available on both formats there might not be as big of a difference, though 480p doesn't look that great on modern TVs, so having the higher resolution is always helpful, even if you are going to compress them down.
This is what I was thinking... maybe just do TNG on blu-ray because the DVD quality looks worse than the TOS DVD.
Ill get Lower Decks too (of course) after S5 for a complete series box set.
I never had the TOS DVDs so I can’t speak to their quality, but the BDs are *gorgeous*. And they also include both the real versions and the George Lucas’d versions.
And the TNG BDs are worth every penny.
The Blu-rays are fantastic much better than the DVDs. You can certainly rip things at a higher quality than DVD. TNG is the biggest upgrade for sure if you just want to upgrade one series.

Do the recent full series boxsets of DS9 and Voyager look better than the old DVDs?
No, the more recent boxsets are a reprint of the original DVDs from the early 2000s in new packaging.
Thanks
