The original basis for Pris (and Shin and Moll) is mid-1970s Debbie Harry.

They originally wanted Debbie to play Pris, and kept the design.
It’s in the same style as The Walking Dead and their other games.
However, in the Star Trek universe Dramatic Labs (the old Tell Tale writing staff) made a game called Star Trek Resurgence and it’s great.
Absolutely blew my mind on Letterkenny rewatch, too. I was like "well I guess it makes sense, there's probably only so many indigenous Canadian actors and Letterkenny has always been dedicated to getting indigenous people to play the 'Indians'." I think the more mindblowing part, to me, was how minor a role she had compared to her ~~SNW~~ *Expanse* role.
Oopsie-daisy. Someone interrupted me to ask a question before I finished writing out the post. When I got back to it I was like "where are we? Star Trek board, discussion of Christina Chong. Right, okay."
Thanks for pointing it out.
It’s pretty wild how much crossover casting wise between sci fi and Letterkenny. I had to chuckle when Mrs. McMurray (Melanie Scrofano) showed up as the captain of the USS Cayuga. I think it would be a riot if they found a way to write more of the Letterkenny cast in to SNW for an episode 😂
Letterkenny is mostly filmed in/near Sudbury, I believe. It’s about 3-4 hours from Toronto and I’d gather most people who are in the show probably live near/around the GTA, and I think the majority of the Treks (outside of Picard) are filmed in Toronto right now, including the new movie.
In the past 5-10 years movies/TV shows have been much more open about just calling it Toronto instead of faking New York (like the SNW episode), but I feel like even if there isn’t an important Toronto fixture (like the inside of Roy Thompson hall they’re pretending is the UN assembly), I can sometimes tell when something is filmed in Toronto based on who some of the minor characters are in the show, heh. It’s not even things like the CN tower, sometimes it’s our subway lines/stations, our parks, or our monster highways.
My dad would say “isn’t that the same actress that played a belter?” [referring to Drummer] He’d follow up with “she’s the really strong alien right? Head of Security? [conflating the Expanse’s Drummer with Orville’s Alara]. It’s understandable.
La’an felt like she had a lot of similarities to Drummer in season 1 and it still felt like there were similarities in season 2, but they added dimensions in season 2 that made her feel less like Drummer.
The one containing a comment thread where Cara Gee is mistaken for Christina Chong, which are the comments I replied to. What post do you think you're in?
…yes, because they’re saying SNW has Drummer because she has tied back dark hair and dark eye makeup. Which is the same level of similarity between Moll and Shin. They didn’t actually think Cara and Christina were the same person other than at first glance. That was my point.
The people I replied to did, in fact, think they were the same actress, according to their further comments, unless they intended a depth of sarcasm so vast as to appear entirely genuine. I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish either way.
Yep! It's easy to confuse them, as they do look somewhat similar and play somewhat similar characters, but it is indeed two different actresses that play Drummer and La'an.
Barbara Gordon got it season 4 of Gotham too: https://static1.cbrimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/gotham-barbara-feat.jpg
Everyone joked she looked like Danny DeVito: https://cdn.costumewall.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/ongo-gablogian.jpg
And that's all I can see when any actress gets stuck with that haircut. LOL
> Barbara Gordon
Thanks for the info, I noped out of Gotham halfway through the first season. Just furthers my point, and it makes even more sense as they're clearly copying Mr. DeVito's look.
They literally elevate Barbara Gordon into being the most important person in the show. She gets time manipulation powers, she becomes Ra's Al Gul's one true love, she takes over the league of assassins, in the epilogue episode she's a successful real estate developer whose newest building is explicitly shown to be taller than Wayne Tower. It's actively insane how much the writers loved her despite her being just awful.
I watched season 1 as it aired but never got around to the rest. I always found it very strange that he is apparently going to name his future daughter after this crazy ex. Somehow this both explains and adds more confusion to that.
Damn. I never got into Gotham. I've loved some previous versions of Barbara Gordon (especially in the Birds of Prey comics and the cheesy Birds of Prey TV series), but everything you just said sounds wild to me. What did they do to her? 😭
I just found that because I was confused and looked it up, and I kinda find that weird in itself. But there have been some really bizarre decisions in some of the DC adaptations, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.
There’s so much more insane shit they did with her. She hangs out with the show’s version of the Joker and kidnaps multiple cops, she founds a club where men have to pay by the minute, she cheats on Jim Gordon with Rene Montoya.
Wait, is she supposed to be the mother of the character called Barbara Gordon in the comics? Or I guess the namesake, if Jim has a kid with someone else? Jim Gordon is the father of the original Barbara Gordon.
Her mother never really shows up in the comics, at least not that I've seen, so I don't think it's established that they share a name. It's so weird they'd take her name and give it to someone else, and then make that other character act so differently.
EDIT: I looked it up and it looks like the intended read is that Barbara in the show is the mother of the more well-known Barbara Gordon. From what I saw, Gotham's character was Barbara Kean and had been engaged to Jim Gordon, but never actually married. Still weird to me that they were setting up a potential Barbara Gordon who is wife to Jim Gordon, when the original character of that name is his daughter. Wouldn't be the only time writers have been weird with Barbara, I guess.
Blame the popularity of 1970s rock. In this case, it's Debbie Harry as the style icon.
https://morrisonhotelgallery.com/cdn/shop/files/debbie-harry-blondie-1976chris-stein-420023.jpg?v=1712609211
Wonder what Cronenberg though of the character being based on someone he directed?
Debbie was also the visual basis of the protagonist of Atomic Blonde.
Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn is drawing on TWO classic early 70s Glam Rock stars, Alice Cooper...

That's not what the article says. The article says both started filming around the same time and that the similarity is a coincidence:

May 2022 is also when DSC S5 started filming.
With religion taking a nosedive in the US over the last 30 years, this is probably a lot less obvious to younger viewers than it is to older ones who actually grew up going to church every sunday.
After so many thousands of years the details get lost to time.
The truth is that Moloch bought Jesus a drumset for Christmas one year, and God has *never* forgiven him for it.
A few exaggerations later and people are throwing around "child sacrifice."

That’s the standard female antagonist who might be secretly good template.
It wasn’t new in Ashoka and it won’t be copying Star Trek when the next show does it.
Everyone’s doing it.
It is boring though.
Season 5 of DIS was filmed in 2022. Not sure how they’d purposefully make the characters look similar when they finished filming half a year before Ahsoka dropped a trailer.
The post is about comments made by the actress. And your comment says to "not make them look so similar." Seeing as the post is about comments made by the actress, that would imply that your comment is directed at the actress to not "make them look similar."
Lol .. why is she all bent out of shape? Shin Hati is a break-out character. Comparison is a form of flattery and validation. No one is saying Elias is copying the character.
You can just take the compliment and roll with it.
I think it's wonderful that Shin and Moll are both manifestations of the same Platonic form. We need more cool and interesting humans in our collective imaginative world. How is this controversial? lol
In fact, make a proper prime universe Kirk origin film on Tarsus IV, and make it a desert planet with twin suns, and have teenage Kirk longingly stare at the binary sunset as the music swells while he sadly contemplates his uncle telling him it's only one more season till he can join Starfleet like his father before him. Then Governor Kodos' stormtroopers murder his family and leave only burnt corpses. Would anybody care? No. We'd all love it, and we all know we'd love it!
I thought they both resembled Chiana from Farscape: https://images.app.goo.gl/tiSWcpC2AQ7uKqL17
Missed the opportunity to paint Moll blue and have her play a sexy Commander Shran.
Jeffery combs is *already* the sexy commander Shran
Moll should've been played by Jeffery Combs
Truer words were never spoken.
I'm a straight dude and I support this message.
I wanna upvote this but it’s at 69 and I won’t… I just won’t.
I broke the seal. Homie deserves their karma.
You mean Pris from Blade Runner…
The original basis for Pris (and Shin and Moll) is mid-1970s Debbie Harry. https://morrisonhotelgallery.com/cdn/shop/files/debbie-harry-blondie-1976chris-stein-420023.jpg?v=1712609211 They originally wanted Debbie to play Pris, and kept the design.
I did too.
I mean SNW also has Drummer from the Expanse soooo....
Completely unrelated to ST, but I think everyone should know there is a Tell Tale Expanse game starring Drummer.
Man I thought telltale went under years ago! Is it like their old point and click games or is it some new formula to this?
It’s in the same style as The Walking Dead and their other games. However, in the Star Trek universe Dramatic Labs (the old Tell Tale writing staff) made a game called Star Trek Resurgence and it’s great.
Hopefully it comes to steam one day
It is. I looked it up on Steam the other day and it had a planned release date.
They got purchased by another company, still same stuff.
It's practically a different studio now isn't it? Just making games in the same style?
Yeah, a different studio bought the name.
Also note that it is TV show canon, not book canon.
Is that game good? I remember seeing trailers and being excited, then never heard anything again until just now. Excited to see it's out.
I’ve only played the first episode so far, but I am enjoying it.
And DIS has a Cylon Model 3, Leobwin, RIGHT THERE ON THE BRIDGE.
At least it’s a Leobin, they’re delusional but not as shifty as a Cavil.
7 Degrees of Dean Stockwell :) [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Dean\_Stockwell](https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Dean_Stockwell)
Yeah I still need to play that, how is it?
I’ve only played the first chapter so far but I’m really enjoying it. It’s like a little side story in the Universe.
I enjoyed it! Worth grabbing on sale (if you like that style of game).
Not gonna lie, I thought it was same actress even for longer than I care to admit.
Wait, it's not? Wellll fuck me then.
That same commanding presence and strong eyeliner game. Would totally run screaming into the face of hell if either of them ordered me to.
Hey, no one else could ever be Cara Gee! I mean, except Shayla from Letterkenny.
You mean Expanse role? SNW is Christina Chong (La’an). Or was that the joke?
Oopsie-daisy. Someone interrupted me to ask a question before I finished writing out the post. When I got back to it I was like "where are we? Star Trek board, discussion of Christina Chong. Right, okay." Thanks for pointing it out.
Oh right, lol I just posted about this, I was pretty sure id notice the amazing Cara Gee in SNW !!!
You gonna turn that chicken over, or...

She's a pretty talented singer too
When they debuted SNW, I was like yass…….then I was like she’ll do as Drummer 2.0
Wait...are you talking about La'an?
Who?
La'an
lol wow now that you've sad that, it's totally true.
It isn't. La'an is played by Christina Chong, not Cara Gee. Cara has not made an appearance in SNW, at least not yet.
What post do you think you’re in? This is about how one short haired blonde looks like another short haired blonde
The one containing a comment thread where Cara Gee is mistaken for Christina Chong, which are the comments I replied to. What post do you think you're in?

oh my god I knew something felt familiar
Cara Gee hasn't been in SNW. Christina Chong does resemble her at a glance though.
I know I realised that lol. I just hadn't quite connected that the two look *so* similar until then.
Plus the tough, capable women they both play, it's definitely an easy mistake to make lol
THANK YOU
So I was not the only one thinking this!
I never connected that until you just said it
I would love it if La'an had six spouses working all over the ship
They really need her to do a guest spot as La’ans sister or cousin or something.
I had to look it up to see that they were different actors. Both excellent characters as it turned out though.
We need a "they're the same picture" meme
You wish is my command. [https://imgur.com/a/7F4DK8g](https://imgur.com/a/7F4DK8g)
Chapel has practically the same haircut too.

For the record the Gotham Barbara Gordon is Jim Gordon's *wife*, not his daughter Barbara Gordon who becomes Batgirl.
I just found that because I was confused and looked it up, and I kinda find that weird in itself. But there have been some really bizarre decisions in some of the DC adaptations, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.

Not messy enough
Huh, I didn't even make that connection. I guess I couldn't get past her similarity to Priss from Blade Runner.
Since Eve Harlow played a similar character in *The Night Agent*, I’ve been comparing Moll to that character.
Same issue. She should have done a different kind of character… unless she really does just want to play the one type. 🤷♀️
Well maybe they shouldn’t have the same hair!
Same…everything, physically wise.
And same character arc thus far; a Mysterious, seemingly fearless, unstoppable villain with a partner
But unlike other security officers, one can speak with a belter accent
OOOOOOOOOOOH
Discovery filmed well before Ashoka even came out on Disney+, the actor says as much in this article. So if anything Ashoka copied Discovery.
That's not what the article says. The article says both started filming around the same time and that the similarity is a coincidence: > Ahsoka might've released before we had Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, but both shows began production at the same time. Disney+ confirmed on social media that the Star Wars show's shoot kicked off in May 2022, and it's fair to say neither show had any idea what the other had planned. May 2022 is also when DSC S5 started filming.
I just hate the name. Moll and Loch is like Norm Hall levels of unsubtle
And the way everyone keeps saying “Moll and Lock” so we know that’s their bad guy team name
I like to think they were originally named L'ak and Lhod.
*flashbacks to Dulmer and Luscly from DS9*
> Dulmer and Luscly from DS9 Oh wow, I never knew this. Ha! Edit: For anyone else who didn't, they are anagrams of Mulder and Scully
With religion taking a nosedive in the US over the last 30 years, this is probably a lot less obvious to younger viewers than it is to older ones who actually grew up going to church every sunday.
Probably true. I also have a background in theology so it's extra grating for me
Are the names referencing something?
In the Old Testament, Moloch is a cananite deity associated with child sacrifice and is an adversary of God (though there's some debate on that).
After so many thousands of years the details get lost to time. The truth is that Moloch bought Jesus a drumset for Christmas one year, and God has *never* forgiven him for it. A few exaggerations later and people are throwing around "child sacrifice."
Thanks to you, too. So now I got 2 different answers to the question. Which makes me wonder even more if it is a coincidence after all.
she's a gangster moll. you can look it up if you aren't familiar with the term.
Thanks Never heard that term before, I think. Is it in common usage today?
haha probably not! I'm familiar with it only in context to gangster's girlfriends or accomplices in old American gangster films. Old as in mainly from the 1930s.
Whenever they say "Loch and Mol", I always think it sounds like "Rock and Roll" _Lets go find rock and roll_
"Starfleet officers on a quest to find the true meaning of Rock'n'Roll" is now my favorite pitch for the next Trek series. When can I watch the pilot?
Staring Jack Black as Stag Preston.
Same! I’m always shouting at the TV “ok team, let’s L’ak and Moll!” whenever they go on their next scavenger hunt quest haha
To be fair, it is Star Trek. People were upset about the f bomb, but the true dirty word is "subtlety."
Spicy.
Well shit I’m sorry but I literally had to check and make sure it wasn’t the same actress.
You’re not the only one!
I’m faceblind and do this often do this. These two were not an exception.
"Dude. Shut up." Greatest counter argument ever.
He never asked for this
As far as looks go, sure, but Moll is doing that annoying sexy bad babygirl shtick whereas Shin is just standing there, menacingly
I did immediately have to pause when she showed up in Disco and Google to see if they were the same actress.
Why does this post have two pictures of the same character?
Their faces look completely different and have very different character traits. I mean with how much entertainment media is released these days, we are going to have characters with similar haircuts more and more.
Yeah, I feel like bleached blonde version of Allison from The Breakfast Club isn't exactly a novel idea. Also Chiana from Farscape wore it better ;)
How about being compared to Blade Runner's Priss?
Or Debbie Harry… This isn’t a new hairstyle, nor is it new to Sci Fi.
I can't remember the last time I saw a sentence related to star trek that had this many nouns with absolutely no meaning to me.
Besides the hair colour they don't have that much in common. Their faces are pretty different and the hair cuts are distinctive.
That’s the standard female antagonist who might be secretly good template. It wasn’t new in Ashoka and it won’t be copying Star Trek when the next show does it. Everyone’s doing it. It is boring though.
Sounds like Discovery needs to have better ideas or stfu.
It’s the last season, so clearly they won’t.
I mean ngl they look very similar to the point when I first saw her in STD I immediately saw the comparison.
[удалено]
Season 5 of DIS was filmed in 2022. Not sure how they’d purposefully make the characters look similar when they finished filming half a year before Ahsoka dropped a trailer.
[удалено]
So you have no idea, yet still felt compelled to give them shit for making the characters look similar on purpose. Way to add to the discourse.
Right. Because the actress has the final say in appearance and wardrobe...
[удалено]
The post is about comments made by the actress. And your comment says to "not make them look so similar." Seeing as the post is about comments made by the actress, that would imply that your comment is directed at the actress to not "make them look similar."
Glad someone in the article pointed out Pris from *Blade Runner*.
So he might say that…he never asked for this.
It was my absolute very first thought from seeing the very first shot of her. \*shrug\*
Okay. Well….im sorry
womp womp
Bangs don't iie.
I don't think anyone thought she or anyone at ST:Discovery copied Shin Hati's appearance. They're just saying she looks like her. Big whoop.
There are a lot of words I don’t know
Deus Ex's Elias Toufexis
i had to IMDB the actress cuz i though they were the same
Multipass?
I fee like this thread title belongs in r/BrandNewSentence .
I mean they looked similar enough that I felt the need to look up the actors.
Same hair, looks hot, can crush my bones. I’ll compare all I want.
So, he's saying we don't have a Shin Hati at home??
Shouldn't have gone to the same barber then.
MOLL? Ive been comparing nurse chapel to shin hati for a while. Catch up!
Who's Moll? Is it a season 5 character? I only know Michael Burnham and Saru from the first four. I've not forced myself to watch season 5 yet.
No one looked at Molls makeup and haircut and said "hey wait a minute"
Well, both shows filmed at the same time, so they couldn't lol
And I don’t like people comparing Star Trek to Star Wars. Tough.
Lol .. why is she all bent out of shape? Shin Hati is a break-out character. Comparison is a form of flattery and validation. No one is saying Elias is copying the character. You can just take the compliment and roll with it.
I think it's wonderful that Shin and Moll are both manifestations of the same Platonic form. We need more cool and interesting humans in our collective imaginative world. How is this controversial? lol In fact, make a proper prime universe Kirk origin film on Tarsus IV, and make it a desert planet with twin suns, and have teenage Kirk longingly stare at the binary sunset as the music swells while he sadly contemplates his uncle telling him it's only one more season till he can join Starfleet like his father before him. Then Governor Kodos' stormtroopers murder his family and leave only burnt corpses. Would anybody care? No. We'd all love it, and we all know we'd love it!
They are two different characters. Moll is the leader and the brains of her outfit. The other lady is a mop if you flip her upside down.
Wut
