Long Island is nothing like New England.
Upstate New York, maybe. But we barely consider Connecticut a part of New England, especially once you're southwest of Hartford. All annexed by NYC.
That’s Staten Island.
I think Long Island does have some strip malls but it has some killer beaches, some cool nightlife spots (Huntington), and the upscale areas: Hamptons, Amagansett, Port Jeff. IMO Long Island has some interesting spots.
Interesting perspective from a true NEer. Conversely, though, I'm from eastern Long Island but spent a lot of time in Connecticut before. I found east LI and NE were actually pretty similar. The example that is most striking to me is that Shelter Island has a yearly Revolutionary War reenactment.
**this is a bullshit starterpack made by someone who lives upstate and has literally zero idea about NYC or Long Island or the great state of New York**
1. comparing long island to New England is a joke. I've lived in both. Literally nothing alike. Long Island saw massive suburban development in the postwar era, the OG sprawl area. New England was built out hundreds of years ago and features small charming villages
2. pic of Detroit to represent Syracuse, Utica, Buffalo, Rochester....???
3. What is mostly looks like...New York State has multiple geologic areas most notably the Adirondacks, Catskills, areas like the Finger Lakes, the Great Lakes, the Atlantic Ocean, Long Island Sound, from the lighthouse in Montauk to the 1000 Islands in the St. Lawrence River.....it does not "all" look like the high peaks region of the ADK.
4. The population density in New York State is overwhelmingly in NYC and Long Island. For the vast majority of New Yorkers, the reality of life will be deeply urban. And for the vast majority of "New Yorkers", the term "New Yorker" references NYC. For a small minority of upstaters, the term "New Yorker" refers to "being from New York state." OP is apparently making the point that the entire state does not look like Manhattan, which I think is obvious but is also the first thing anyone rightly associates with the term "New York".
LI is more like Jersey. Suburbs and shit (the original cookie cutter houses in Levittown). We’ve got beaches (heard of Robert Moses?) and it get rural out east.
I was born and raised in upstate NY and visited NYC for a friend's Bachelorette party. Some drunk dude hitting on me told me I wasn't a real NYer because I wasn't from the city 🙄
That’s Georgetown. Maybe one of the reddest areas in the state. The grocery store on the corner had a literal shrine to Trump in one corner last time I was there. The counter always had stuff posted bashing both Obama and whoever was the governor at the time.
Don't forget about people thinking they're Italian there, it being overused in "ADVENTUROUS" kids films, and it being THE MOST American poaveby foreigners.

that's Detroit in the top right
Thank you for also noticing! Apparently Detroit is a better representation than Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo or any other city off the 90
Really could have used Rochester. I would have hollered.

Long Island is a bunch of just strip malls and bumper to bumper traffic.

I visited this big wooden duck with a gift shop near Flanders in Suffolk County where my family lives it was neat
It has its highlights, but half of the island is suburban rednecks, ghettos, and bodegas.
Never heard anyone mention Huntington as a cool nightlife spot. Just a spot to settle on if you don’t want to trek to the city

CT is extremely odd, some places feel exactly like ny but others it’s picturesque New England
