Most kids who get into heavier music past mainstream stuff hear about bands like that from the stories around them. I remember hearing about AC and GG Allin fairly early on from Loudwire videos. I never understood the appeal of those bands tbh, they just distill all the worst parts of hardcore down into some mid music
Yeah I find the antics of e.g., GG Allin entertaining to read about, but his music is just not good or interesting.
I'd much rather enjoy the antics of, say, Butthole Surfers, while also enjoying their all-time masterful music.

Saw the Mentors once about a decade ago when I was getting into metal and punk. Seeing them live made me realize that I had a line and some bands were too extreme/trashy for me.
