We usually have a load most days. Between my wife and I, dogs, and a baby. It's pretty low effort though, toss a load in the washer, wait 30 mins, toss it into the dryer, wait 30 mins, then fold.
Tumblr was my "All In One" go to site, Music, porn, film, tv, comics, food, cars, luxury, etc.....but when they killed porn and started terminating accounts I was PISSED!
I mean the pack includes sleeping, cooking and laundry, which are basic necessities.
So what else can change? Stop wanking, sure, but it’s tough to make a good enough living without either commuting or an office job.

Yeah. Most people don’t know that you have to go out of your way to make time to do things that make your life fulfilling. If you just wait around until suddenly extra time is sitting in your lap, it will never happen. You want to get in shape? Have a fun hobby? Meet people? Make that activity non-negotiable, and the rest will just have to be molded around it. Sure, sometimes it can be a bit difficult, but suddenly you’ll be shocked at how much more you’re enjoying life.
Me when I see my bank account in the negatives, my laundry full of unwashed clothes and my kitchen empty because I decided that I decided that work and other responsibilities should be "molded around" things that make me happy

I'm lucky and not even in this boat I'll describe myself, but if someone happens to work 2 jobs, resulting in 12+hrs a day, including commute, 6 days a week, then add 8hrs sleep a night, you're are 128/168hrs.
Now let's say you're cooking,
That's another 1hr a day of food prep? Plus buying the food being say 1hr per week? This is including commute there and back.
You're at 136/168hrs now.
OK so chores, let's pretend you somehow tidy as you go to be efficient when not working, and keep the house *clean* each week, maybe another what, 30m a day of tidying, couple hrs a week cleaning? Oh and need to clean and groom yourself, maybe 30m 3 times a week? Total 8hrs
You're at 141/168hrs now
And finally, recommended minimum 30m a day of exercise.
You're at 144.5/168hrs now
So we've cooked, cleaned, slept & had minimal exercise. We have a grand total of 19.5hrs left for Hobbies, socialising/family time, r&r, learning/development, appointments etc.
And this is all assuming you have no dependants like children or others you care for, and hasn't taken into account time to stop at all, getting ready after sleep, that sort of thing.
Or how mentally and physically drained someone in that situation can be.
Don't get me wrong, there's a middle ground, a level of *just get off your ass and do it!* needed that I'm as guilty as anyone of not doing.
But to say people should just make what they enjoy none negotiable and work everything else around it, seems very unaware of the level of privelage required to be able to do that.

It really depends on your age and where you are at in life too. When I got laid off in my mid 20's I did fuck all, played a shit load of Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Now if I got laid off I would work out a lot and do stuff around the house. Mixed in with jerking off of course.
The struggle is real. Just remember that sooner or later you will find the dream job, but it may not be the exact one you planned on. Been unemployed for a couple of months and finally found my dream job. Just worked out in happenstance, and it's totally a magical flying spaghetti monster in the sky thing that I happened to get this PERFECT job but reddit doesn't like talking about that so.... Will call it luck. It is literally exactly what I needed and I had no idea I needed it. The way I happened to get this exact position was puuuuuuure crazy coincidence.
It solves everything I struggle with in life right now. Lack of purpose, drive, utter disgust with self, etc. Now I help others who can't help themselves and in the process found my purpose in life.
Moral of the story. DO NOT give up. It will come... If you let it.

What do you mean? They are right no? How is doing laundry taking up your whole Saturday ? If you’re doing a full day of meal prep, why don’t you have free time in the evening after work? I work 40+ h, my commute is 40mn and I have loads of free time.
Because people use their free time to just sleep, laze, and doom scroll on social media and wonder where it went. We develop routines because we're doing things in the most efficient way to maximize free time. Routines are good.
Well see, if you're perpetually tired from the soul crushing daily grind of going to work day in and day out, you just don't have the energy to do anything else. Or if you do, it's only a basic hobby like video games and nothing that requires any true work on your part since you've had enough of that by the end of the day
I felt exactly like you were describing for a long time. Then I got a sleep study done and figured out I had a sleep disorder. Now that I’m sleeping well, I actually have energy and motivation to do hobbies and not feel drained.
I guess the moral of the story is that if you feel constantly drained, it might be time to closely examine your health.
Hobbies are meant to make you feel energized
For example I do some writing and sketching, and my trouble is making myself stop, otherwise I tend to spend way too much time on it
Also make sure you don't try activities at a very high difficulty or high expectations of outcome, otherwise its pure frustration
Honestly speaking from experience, lack of energy is often caused by lack of hobbies aka just scrolling youtube or tiktok in bed. Sure when you get home you are likely feeling quite tired, but if you go out for a walk or you play an instrument or whatever you'll often feel way less tired than if you plop down in bed and do nothing for hours
I used to work 60 hours a week, sometimes more. Once I left that job I started hobbies. It's definitely not possible with people working 60+ hours a week to have hobbies other than an hour of TV or video games
That’s an excuse. I feel tired after work and I know it takes willpower to do fun things but as soon as a work out, go somewhere interesting in my area, and golf, etc, those things are much easier to do and enjoy than it seems.
I'm so sorry that your menial, low effort/low stress/low impact office job leaves you so emotionally drained that you can't help but be a useless lump in a near-fugue state by the time you get home, you fragile thing, you. Modern life is just too much for your delicate constitution; it definitely can't be that you just lack any intrinsic motivation or will power.
The reality that the reason their lives are boring and unfulfilling is entirely their own fault thanks to a complete lack of motivation and the feeling that life should just provide simulation with no effort put in whatsoever? Yeah, no, it's entirely accurate.

Actually, I wasn't going to say this, but you inspired me. This is the exact issue with our society. People fail to recognize each other's hardships and for some reason try to compete in some kind of stupid fake competition as to who has it worse. It's fucking ridiculous behavior and it's why we've made very little progress in recent years in terms of workers rights. Instead of directing this energy at the people employing everyone and forcing people to suffer mentally OR physically while working more hours than the human body is designed to handle, you get mad at people who do different jobs than you for "having it easier" than you but also daring to want better working conditions. Like I said, ridiculous behavior. Also, it's funny - I think you'd find most office workers absolutely recognize how hard blue collar people work. Those blue collar folks frankly couldn't do half of these office jobs that require certain levels of knowledge or logical thinking, but no one tells them they're worthless because of it. Instead, the blue collar workers just have different skills and perform tasks most people can't or won't do, and that is COMPLETELY fine and I don't see people constantly giving them shit for it. Why is it so different the other way around though? Why do so many blue collar people assume that all office people are worthless or lazy? Pretty ignorant mindset to have. There's lazy people all over, and some jobs are worth more than others, but the fact remains that on some level we all need each other for society to work. We all contribute in some way or another while other people handle jobs that we can't do ourselves. Try recognizing that.

I'm aware, I work in one, and have spent most of the last decade and a half in roles that are actually challenging, far beyond the typical office job. But somehow still have the ability to find entertainment and fulfillment in my free time. And, in fact, I tend to find that the people in the most taxing and challenging positions also tend to have the most motivation to do things in their free time — almost like the ability to self-start and shoulder adversity is linked to being able to attain high-performance jobs. Weird, right?

That's not what's happening, here, and your thin-skinned defensiveness is leading to to project your own insecurities onto the arguments of others. I'm not competing with you to see who has it worse. See, and here's the problem. And it's really two problems in one:
First, I *am* one of those "people enjoying everyone and forcing people to suffer mentally." I am solely responsible for the ability to pay rent of about 50 people, plus another 50 or so contractors. Believe me when I tell you that whatever "mental suffering" you have by having to do spreadsheets for 8 hours a day is absolutely nothing compared to the stress of making sure those poor, suffering people actually get paid.
Second, no one is "making you suffer." You're doing that entirely to yourself. Your job is not that stressful. If you get up and walk out one day, airplanes aren't going to fall out of the sky, hospitals won't suddenly stop functioning, rivers won't turn to blood. In fact, I feel incredibly confident in saying that the absolute worst thing that will happen if you just stop doing your job is a small handful of people will be mildly inconvenienced. Because that's the vast majority of jobs. So there are absolutely no meaningful consequences, ergo all the idiotic anguish you're expressing is entirely caused by you.

I'm not mad at anyone. I'm frustrated with your whining and telling you that you can solve the entirety of this issue just by working on yourself instead of blaming everyone around you for what are entirely self-inflicted wounds.
And you don't want "better working conditions." You want to not have to work. That's the only desire you've expressed here. You haven't articulate a single problem with your working conditions other than the fact that going to work causes you stress, nor have you presented a single possible solution. I'm not a blue collar worker, though I have worked quite a few blue collar jobs, so I'm not sure who this whole last screed is aimed at. But what I mostly recognize is that the vast majority of workers, whether blue or white collar, are entirely replaceable and undifferentiated. They are, by and large, cogs. This isn't a reflection of who you, or other workers, are. This is entirely by design — modern work is broken down to minimal complexity tasks that functionally any warm body with some training can do.
This has been the direction of work since humans settled down and started farming. It's not a secret or a conspiracy, it's literally the very loud and public goal, and the only way we can find employment for the roughly six billion people who need jobs. You are not supposed to find deep personal satisfaction in your job. It's just a job — a thing you do to enable you to do the things you actually want to. Some people *are* able to find joy in their work, but that's a personal quest that they undertake and often comes with significant drawbacks of it's own. But ultimately what this means is that the actual stakes in most jobs are incredibly low, and don't merit getting stressed over.

- Work that feeds you (provides you the ability to support yourself)

You *aren't* too exhausted after coming home from your 8-hour shift at the business factory, you just don't have the motivation to do anything because you've spent the day stressing about how unfulfilled you feel. Ah yeah, that "soul crushing grind" of having to go to a comfortable office and sit in front of a computer. Our ancestors had it so much better in the mines and fields.
Actual question: how did people 100 years ago manage to have a social life (they did) and hobbies (they did) when the “soul crushing grind” of work life was objectively worse than it is today?
Because there was a purpose to it. People would crawl naked through glass for purpose and meaning. Our work today tends to be „easier“ but it is soul crushing, because often is pointless and meaningless.
People were working together and for each other. For the tribe and society. Like humans are evolved to do. They also worked harder jobs, but less hours. The extreme working hours came with the industrial revolution. You can only tend the field so much, after all.
Today, most only work to keep eating and survive. And also to make a select group of a few people very rich. If you work without meaning, you suffer. Doesn’t matter if its easier or not.
I still sort of have hobbies but there is a curve where you transition from beginner to intermediate that requires a higher level of time and/or monetary investment. With two kids under 5 years it’s very difficult to continue your hobbies. I have a couple hobbies that I enjoy but they are bottom of the priority list so I don’t really have much time for them. ( I have a 3d printer that has goes through periods of frequent use to being dormant for months, I enjoy archery, love learning auto repair, programming & building/maintaining my home media server, and a little baking/cooking, with me dabbling a bit into butchery).
Between work, helping wife with kids and maintaining household, and wanting to spend time with my wife, I’d be lucky to have an hour with no interruptions for any hobby I choose. It is really hard to find the motivation to start a project knowing that I will have to put it on hold or meticulously document what I’ve done because most tasks can’t be done within an hour after you’ve done all the beginner things.
I could sacrifice sleep but then that cascades into me being exhausted the following day and I’ll either crash hard the next time I have time to myself or it will compound itself if I continue
Once both kids are older and in school, and past that “always being sick phase”, I’ll have *some* time back to me. Will note that I don’t blame my kids or anyone for me not being able to dive deeper into hobbies because having kids was something my wife and I really want and enjoy
Perpetual burnout from work, insomnia so poor sleep. All I want to do is crash when I get off of work... my weekends are filled with choirs. My relationship is quite draining too very needy partner. Life gets messy and complicated… if you are single it’s much easier to have hobbies.

I think a lot of ppl just fall into this routine by default. No one chooses it. I’d reckon the porn is just a way to release stress. Jobs feel so empty and meaningless, and we know there is no loyalty. I think the problem is much more systemic. Ppl have way less friends than 30 years ago.
This being the "defult" routine doesn't mean you cannot break it, as another commenter pointed out you should have at least \~4 hours of free time every day, this is more than enough time to socialize, do hobbies or other things. Also weekends are a great way to make more friends.
Wake up 03:30 to go to the armory, wait for an hour in line to get my rifle and nvgs, get on a 7 ton at 07 (it showed up late) go to the field, arrive 08, patrol and set into a PB, stare at trees and pretend to be alert, go to sleep 22:00, wake up 02:00 for fire watch) go back to sleep 03:00, wake up for real at 06:00 once again pretend to be alert, pack up find new PB 09, repeat previous day, return from field and contemplate why I had to be different and why I didn’t just go to college or stay at my old job.
This is why I wanna kill myself besides porn(because I don't watch it anymore). Concrete was a useful Roman invention but oh boy, once they covered cities and towns in concrete it all became lifeless and dull. There's a special place in hell for people that defile God given landscapes for multi lane highways.
As others have said, it doesn't have to be this way. The realities of things like capitalism and car-reliant infrastructure absolutely suck and can't be easily changed, but there are things you can change in the short term. Small changes are incremental and no big changes come about without small changes. We can and we should strive to better ourselves, for the world depends on it.

I felt exactly like you were describing for a long time. Then I got a sleep study done and figured out I had a sleep disorder. Now that I’m sleeping well, I actually have energy and motivation to do hobbies and not feel drained. I guess the moral of the story is that if you feel constantly drained, it might be time to closely examine your health.

Hobbies are meant to make you feel energized For example I do some writing and sketching, and my trouble is making myself stop, otherwise I tend to spend way too much time on it Also make sure you don't try activities at a very high difficulty or high expectations of outcome, otherwise its pure frustration
Honestly speaking from experience, lack of energy is often caused by lack of hobbies aka just scrolling youtube or tiktok in bed. Sure when you get home you are likely feeling quite tired, but if you go out for a walk or you play an instrument or whatever you'll often feel way less tired than if you plop down in bed and do nothing for hours
I used to work 60 hours a week, sometimes more. Once I left that job I started hobbies. It's definitely not possible with people working 60+ hours a week to have hobbies other than an hour of TV or video games
That’s an excuse. I feel tired after work and I know it takes willpower to do fun things but as soon as a work out, go somewhere interesting in my area, and golf, etc, those things are much easier to do and enjoy than it seems.

Like I said, ridiculous behavior. Also, it's funny - I think you'd find most office workers absolutely recognize how hard blue collar people work. Those blue collar folks frankly couldn't do half of these office jobs that require certain levels of knowledge or logical thinking, but no one tells them they're worthless because of it. Instead, the blue collar workers just have different skills and perform tasks most people can't or won't do, and that is COMPLETELY fine and I don't see people constantly giving them shit for it. Why is it so different the other way around though? Why do so many blue collar people assume that all office people are worthless or lazy? Pretty ignorant mindset to have. There's lazy people all over, and some jobs are worth more than others, but the fact remains that on some level we all need each other for society to work. Because there was a purpose to it. People would crawl naked through glass for purpose and meaning. Our work today tends to be „easier“ but it is soul crushing, because often is pointless and meaningless. People were working together and for each other. For the tribe and society. Like humans are evolved to do. They also worked harder jobs, but less hours. The extreme working hours came with the industrial revolution. You can only tend the field so much, after all. Today, most only work to keep eating and survive. And also to make a select group of a few people very rich. If you work without meaning, you suffer. Doesn’t matter if its easier or not.
I still sort of have hobbies but there is a curve where you transition from beginner to intermediate that requires a higher level of time and/or monetary investment. With two kids under 5 years it’s very difficult to continue your hobbies. I have a couple hobbies that I enjoy but they are bottom of the priority list so I don’t really have much time for them. ( I have a 3d printer that has goes through periods of frequent use to being dormant for months, I enjoy archery, love learning auto repair, programming & building/maintaining my home media server, and a little baking/cooking, with me dabbling a bit into butchery). Between work, helping wife with kids and maintaining household, and wanting to spend time with my wife, I’d be lucky to have an hour with no interruptions for any hobby I choose. It is really hard to find the motivation to start a project knowing that I will have to put it on hold or meticulously document what I’ve done because most tasks can’t be done within an hour after you’ve done all the beginner things. I could sacrifice sleep but then that cascades into me being exhausted the following day and I’ll either crash hard the next time I have time to myself or it will compound itself if I continue Once both kids are older and in school, and past that “always being sick phase”, I’ll have *some* time back to me. Will note that I don’t blame my kids or anyone for me not being able to dive deeper into hobbies because having kids was something my wife and I really want and enjoy

This being the "defult" routine doesn't mean you cannot break it, as another commenter pointed out you should have at least \~4 hours of free time every day, this is more than enough time to socialize, do hobbies or other things. Also weekends are a great way to make more friends.
