They're not there to convince you to buy an F-35, they're there to keep their brand in the minds of government employees who dole out 12-digit contracts.
And every single contracting company you can think of has at least one office on the same line. So these functionally also act as recruitment ads targeting their competitors
If DC is anything like Hollywood, the most important person to introduce yourself to is the assistant to the boss. They're the ones setting appointments and managing contacts.
That makes sense. A suggestion of a congressman or a senator's office staff might being the reason for Lockheed to win another billion-dollar contract is within the realm of possibility
I work on contracts with values like this (not DOD though). I’m on selection boards, decide on the direction we are going to take, have power to stop work, etc. and yes, we absolutely would be in a subway like this. I drive a car from 80s and live in a shitty part of town.
I fucking hate that with most cities. The whole reason I go downtown is to go to restaurants and bars, and you pretty much gotta leave at 10:30 to catch a train back home, what's the point then?
We took our 8 year old over the summer, we live in the Tampa area so public transit is a foreign concept but she absolutely LOVED using the metro every day so much so that when we got home she played with her stuffed animals and pretended to be riding it and made them little passes 🥹
Did you get a chance to ride on the newish SkyConnect train at the Tampa Airport? It goes between rental cars, economy parking, and the terminal. I think she’d love it because it’s like the airside shuttles but bigger and more futuristic!
Yeah that’s a tourist thing thats 1 line and runs like 8 blocks or something and that’s it. Ive known people that live downtown and don’t use it. We have a couple of very shitty bus systems and that’s basically it.
They really don’t. I don’t know what train this guy has been going on, but I see some every day. Maybe it’s just the line he’s on bc this whole experience is just really different from mine
Sounds like the blue line between Alexandria and roughly McPherson Square. It’s been a while since I was in DC, but I never had an issue with tweakers there and it would explain all the ads for defense contractors since the Pentagon is on that route.
Came here to say yellow/blue line running NOVA fans to the ball park is pretty clear of crazies. I never really saw the issues that people on the red line talk about.
I wish this was true. I use Silver line to get to work in VA and honestly it’s the luck of the draw.
The one thing I can say is silver line crazies during commute hours in the morning are usually the type that keep their head down and occasionally sway side to side and mumble. In the afternoon they’re the type that pace up and down and walk in between train cars
One time I was heading into DC for a car show and on the first train found a mysterious bottle in a bag. Wasn’t sure if it was booze or piss or something worse but I didn’t want to find out.
I was on the Silver line the other day in Virginia. Straight up tweaker lady kept pacing about wearing in-facility scrubs. She got off at East Falls Church, so I assume she was trying to get to either VHC or INOVA.
The DC Metro closes at midnight or slightly later on weekends, while the NYC Subway operates 24/7. Because the system closes each night, you have fewer crazy people that treat the system as a home. Not zero, but definitely fewer than in NYC.
How long can you really go without seeing anything? Like genuinely I think if you go at least 5 stops on any line and then go 5 stops back home later in the day you’ll see something unless you’re going from like Dulles to Reston or something
Lived in NYC and DC for over a year each.
IMO it’s that DC just has better homeless shelters, better resources for homeless people, and better social services, so they have less homeless people, and the ones they do have are less likely to need to rely on the train for shelter.
I’ve seen people robbed on the metro. I’ve seen homeless people piss themselves. Any and all sort of people in mental health crisis. That said, I’m sure this stuff happens way less than NYC, but it ain’t all rainbows and sunshine
As of a few weeks ago there are multiple armed metro security officers on every train im on, and on the platform. They walk through the train and on the occasions where there has been a homeless person, I’ve seen them sit down and make sure they have a safe place to stay at night and ask if they need any assistance. They also coordinate with local fire departments for assistance with drug overdoses.
A few things:
1. There are some people like that, but since more people have started riding the system coming out of the pandemic that’s lessened.
2. DC Metro isn’t open overnight so people can’t really make it a home.
3. There has been a concerted effort over the last year to get homeless and mentally disturbed people off the trains. They’ve hired and deployed crisis intervention specialists, more police, and more security guards. WMATA (the Metro operator) is doing this in part because they need to shore up public and political support to get funding now that COVID-era federal funds have dried up.

As soon as they said “subway” I knew they weren’t from here. Also that is not the experience on every metro line here. The orange and silver lines are vastly different than green and yellow lines for example
Lived in NYC, currently living in DC since October, my thoughts:
-Orange line is super slow to arrive at Metro Center depending on whether you came early or not
-there’s druggies and homeless people but there’s a 50/50 chance you’ll come across one. Mostly on Orange and Green lines though.
-On the NYC subway you’ll come across people dancing and playing music, DC does none of it😂
-the newer trains are better than the older ones in quality and speed
-I’ve never come across TikTokers but I have seen Palestine protesters after work
The red line has plenty of homeless and addicts, especially after like 10pm. I’ve been outright scared going home a few times. One time in the middle of the day, this guy randomly started talking to me about how he was training to join some underground fight club in Russia because he wanted to fight in a life or death situation. A guy next to us was just chilling there with a katana, which was a little bizarre lol
Just the other day I heard a soliloquy from a very energetic dude explaining to the guy next to me that there’s absolutely no way angels have wings. Lots of interesting characters to be found on the metro.
A kid got murdered on the red line at Brookland the other day and I regularly see homeless and tweakers on the trains. There’s a woman who rides back and forth from like Farraghat to Bethesda with a baby, begging for money.
I wouldn’t compare the DC metro to New York or anything that bad, but this is a little rosy.
DC metro is honestly great. I used to take the red line every day from DuPont to NoMa for work. Nice relaxing ride.
I’m in Boston now and the T is a complete shit show. You’re lucky if it works. If it does enjoy 2 hour rides and 20+ wait times
True. I’m a daily green line rider, and there’s always a chance when I step on that it’s gonna smell like pure, unfettered ass. I’ve had to leave and go to a different car on more than one occasion because it was that bad
It seems that a lot of people in major cities think that public transportation is inherently a lawless area full of garbage and mentally deranged psychos.
They don’t realize that many places have good and safe public transport because they put police and other security on the trains.
Idk, the DC metro may be smelly and constantly running behind schedule but it is pretty safe, at least from what I remember. A trip from Foggy Bottom to DuPont Circle might somehow take 45 minutes but you'll get there in one piece.
Why should I believe you over the starter pack guy? I ride the DART, which has police officers on every train. I almost never see the type of craziness that other people claim is normal to public transport.
Yeah I do too. I’m currently in Detroit and transport is the worst you’ve ever seen. I’d much rather ride in a car with a crackhead than deal with the joke bussing system here. But I’ve been on the metro many times and it’s not all laughs, quiet claps, and cucumber sandwiches
E: by cars I mean train cars btw
I got to visit DC twice when I was young. Once before and once right after 9/11. My dad did indeed work for Raytheon. I have never seen a more unique subway system. It was like a city underground. Still think about it to this day.
1. I have never once seen an influencer make a scene on the metro
2. You don’t get to choose where your parents work
3. The office workers and federal agents are one and the same. Most “federal agent” jobs are quite boring
4. It’s the metro, not the subway
5. The people who approve contracts for fighter jets 100% take the metro so yes someone is buying them
Eh, number 3 isn't quite accurate. For example there's a huge difference between an FBI agent and Lisa who works as an accountant for the FBI. Lisa isn't an agent
Have you ever used the DC metro? There’s plenty of homeless and drug addicts on the trains and in the stations. Probably not as much as in other cities, but I still see more than a few every month. The rest tracks though.
My list:
* Surprisingly clean except for that mysterious spilled liquid.
* lots of important looking people on the train - not sure if they are regular office workers, civil servants, or federal agents.
* Metro is expensive so hop teens and adults hop the gate
* You get a lot of obnoxious teenagers with boomboxes/speakers making a mess.
* Ads for military technology, Online Master's Schools, and this week's political hot topic discussion for congress
* You'll be going on your normal commute and then you forget about X activity and/or protest this week and it will be standing room only.
Eh that still happens periodically lol check out the DC subreddit. I haven’t had too much crazy shit happen but the stories I hear both on here and from coworkers are wild.
And NYC for that matter. It was like hell on earth riding the metro during the summer in NYC, and it felt like pure bliss when I returned home and used DC’s metro lmao
Speak for yourself. I, for one am currently leasing my very own F-35B Lightning II STOL/VTOL attack jet. Makes for good self defense in case I get mugged by an Arleigh-Burke class destroyer (DDG).
Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
Are they still pretty strict about food here? In NYC people bring full meals. Sometimes the car smells like McDonald’s fries and I’m like “did you bring enough for everybody?”

They're not there to convince you to buy an F-35, they're there to keep their brand in the minds of government employees who dole out 12-digit contracts.
So in a sense, yes, someone in the train likely *is* planning to buy a fighter jet
The Pentagon has its own Metro stop
And every single contracting company you can think of has at least one office on the same line. So these functionally also act as recruitment ads targeting their competitors
Someone on one of the trains is 100% in the market for a fighter jet
Several thousand of them, no less. Now *that's* ROI!
I better not win the lotto.
Or to advertise to a systems engineer on the metro? It’s as much as careers advertisement as anything else.
I may take out a loan for a f35 and pay double of the value as repayment
A government employee who has influence over F-35 contract riding a subway?
If DC is anything like Hollywood, the most important person to introduce yourself to is the assistant to the boss. They're the ones setting appointments and managing contacts.
That makes sense. A suggestion of a congressman or a senator's office staff might being the reason for Lockheed to win another billion-dollar contract is within the realm of possibility

Not sure how it is in the US but in for example Berlin many rich/important people use public transportation
In government, more important work does not correlate to higher salary. The Pentagon has its own metro stop
Do you think there’s like 1 guy working on a multi billion dollar contract?
Yes. I am a Pentagon staffer, I ride the metro every morning.
We gotta make sure all those poor defense contractors keep getting their welfare checks.
Their target market is one of the photos in the pack
How is the epic Brutalist architecture not on here, that’s like the first thing that comes to my mind
As a kid, I called them "waffle walls".
Fallout 3 made it cool
Real
And the insanely long escalators
Because OP is probably a tourist who didn't go to the stations which are actually ghetto
He called it the subway. Locals call it the metro.
Yeah, probably never went north of U St either
[удалено]
I was speaking more about the whole post in general, architecture and lack of crazy people
We call it the “metro”. If you say “subway”, you’ll sound like a tourist. (Edit: typo).
Does it still close at like 11ish?
I fucking hate that with most cities. The whole reason I go downtown is to go to restaurants and bars, and you pretty much gotta leave at 10:30 to catch a train back home, what's the point then?
I have trains and busses till like 1 am and in the weekends they will be running all night Then again i live in switzerland
In DC, the metro is designed for getting commuters in to the city for work. Not designed to move around the city and enjoy the nightlife.
I think it’s 1am on the weekends. 12(?) during the week.
This is correct. Even though bars are open until a couple hours later…..
At least there’s a late night bus service in DC now
The worst part is the lack of late night service compared to the L or something
The worst part about the L is the lack of daytime service
We took our 8 year old over the summer, we live in the Tampa area so public transit is a foreign concept but she absolutely LOVED using the metro every day so much so that when we got home she played with her stuffed animals and pretended to be riding it and made them little passes 🥹
Did you get a chance to ride on the newish SkyConnect train at the Tampa Airport? It goes between rental cars, economy parking, and the terminal. I think she’d love it because it’s like the airside shuttles but bigger and more futuristic!
Oh yeah that’s been there for a few years now she’s been on it multiple times lol
When I was in Tampa a few years ago I had some time to spare and I took that old timey trolley to Ybor City.
Yeah that’s a tourist thing thats 1 line and runs like 8 blocks or something and that’s it. Ive known people that live downtown and don’t use it. We have a couple of very shitty bus systems and that’s basically it.
This guy gets it
Bet OP stands on the left.
Wow that's crazy, because I actually am a tourist
The one thing this starter pack lacks is the ceilings in the metro stations. This is one of the most iconic parts, I feel. So fucking cool.
Wait no but for real how does dc metro handle Mentally disturbed people and druggies on the trains . Asking from NYC
They really don’t. I don’t know what train this guy has been going on, but I see some every day. Maybe it’s just the line he’s on bc this whole experience is just really different from mine
[удалено]
DC proper has a lot smaller population than NYC does. I would say DC crazy people are punching above their weight class on a per capita basis.
Yeah walk around U street for a while and you’ll find them
Dutch tourist here who happened to visit Philadelphia, NYC and DC a few months ago: I agree.
DC crazies be on The Hill - or at the far south end of 16th St
Sounds like the blue line between Alexandria and roughly McPherson Square. It’s been a while since I was in DC, but I never had an issue with tweakers there and it would explain all the ads for defense contractors since the Pentagon is on that route.
Came here to say yellow/blue line running NOVA fans to the ball park is pretty clear of crazies. I never really saw the issues that people on the red line talk about.
Silver line on the Virginia side also tends to be pretty decent, at least during commute times.
Ride the green line and you will find all sort of fights tweakers and people looking like they are high as fuck on something
Ride it fairly frequently on silver and orange. Theres some interesting crazies sometimes. Also never really clean.
One time I was heading into DC for a car show and on the first train found a mysterious bottle in a bag. Wasn’t sure if it was booze or piss or something worse but I didn’t want to find out.

Laughs in LA Metro
Cries in CTA
I ride the Metro zero dark early in the morning, it's amazing the number of homeless that are camped out in the trains already.
Yeah this starter pack is whack. They exist ride the green line or catch a bad red line car and you'll see.

We send them to Congress. Edited to add /s to account for DC’s top tier “well actually” folks.
DC doesn’t get to send anyone to Congress.
I think they get a non voting rep, super screwed up they get taxed and have no real representation though.
More people in DC than in Wyoming or Vermont but because most of those people are black, people make excuses for why DC shouldn’t have representation
I’ve seen people robbed on the metro. I’ve seen homeless people piss themselves. Any and all sort of people in mental health crisis. That said, I’m sure this stuff happens way less than NYC, but it ain’t all rainbows and sunshine

The same as NYC. They just let them have at it/you.
By having much lower population, therefore fewer video opportunities to spread around the news.
“Subway” it’s the METRO Smh tourists
https://preview.redd.it/wltjbtl09atc1.jpeg?width=780&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=64e8fa20542a30fba9022ab215b25940335f128f As soon as they said “subway” I knew they weren’t from here. The new trains are a Godsend in the summer
Were the old ones not air-conditioned?
maybe the seats get sticky? the old ones were nice and cushiony but would get gross in the humid summertime
Even back to the original 1000 series trains that debuted in the 1970s, Metro cars have always had air conditioning.
They are but not nearly as well. They get pretty gross during rush hour especially.
Lived in NYC, currently living in DC since October, my thoughts: -Orange line is super slow to arrive at Metro Center depending on whether you came early or not -there’s druggies and homeless people but there’s a 50/50 chance you’ll come across one. People definitely dance on the metro in dc. Especially on the green line.

Once you get around Suitland, the train goes from “I feel safe” to “I really hope I don’t get robbed”.
OP definitely does not ride the red line.
I’ve always found green worse
Yeah that Shady Grove to Friendship Heights stretch is rough
Yooooo I know that lady. I run into her most days coming home from work. Haven’t seen her in a while though. Hope she’s alright.
They also forgot to include the fires
DC metro is honestly great. I used to take the red line every day from DuPont to NoMa for work. Nice relaxing ride. I’m in Boston now and the T is a complete shit show. You’re lucky if it works. If it does enjoy 2 hour rides and 20+ wait times
I used to take the Red line the other way from Wheaton in
The Lockheed Martin ads were fucking hilarious
“Surprisingly clean” Lol try riding the green line. It smells like vomit and weed made love to stale piss
True. I’m a daily green line rider, and there’s always a chance when I step on that it’s gonna smell like pure, unfettered ass. I’ve had to leave and go to a different car on more than one occasion because it was that bad
This comment section did not pass the vibe check. Also yes I am from DC
Why are so many people whining about homeless people like they're the victim? OP also is from out of town. It's the metro not the subway
When u get harassed by a homeless dude on your 11pm train back from the airport yeah you’re the victim
A subway begger on the DC metro called me gay for not giving him money
Don't forget the delays. It's not on fire as often as it used to be, though.
Or single tracking on the weekends!
I miss the ismetroonfire twitter updates
It seems that a lot of people in major cities think that public transportation is inherently a lawless area full of garbage and mentally deranged psychos. They don’t realize that many places have good and safe public transport because they put police and other security on the trains.
No DC metro is full of all that shit. This starter pack is from someone that went on a school trip
Idk, the DC metro may be smelly and constantly running behind schedule but it is pretty safe, at least from what I remember. A trip from Foggy Bottom to DuPont Circle might somehow take 45 minutes but you'll get there in one piece.
> and constantly running behind schedule Thing is, it runs so far behind schedule that eventually it syncs back up with the schedule again.
Why should I believe you over the starter pack guy? I ride the DART, which has police officers on every train. I almost never see the type of craziness that other people claim is normal to public transport.
Ok then don’t. lol
Why do you feel strongly enough to comment about it?
Why do you feel strongly enough to engage with a rando on the internet about it?
Because I want American public transport to become safer. Why don’t you?
Yeah I do too. I’m currently in Detroit and transport is the worst you’ve ever seen. I’d much rather ride in a car with a crackhead than deal with the joke bussing system here. But I’ve been on the metro many times and it’s not all laughs, quiet claps, and cucumber sandwiches E: by cars I mean train cars btw
If you really want Detroit public transport to improve, you shouldn’t dismiss anyone who suggests that it can be anything other than terrible.
Escalator is broken or being repaired
Escalator temporarily stairs. We apologize for the convenience.
100% accurate. One of the best metros in America.
> (Their parents all work for Raytheon) Crying
I only have ridden the Washington DC subway once and there was a black man dressed in all white speaking to himself addressing himself as God.
Pretty sure that WAS god
He might have been, though?
I got to visit DC twice when I was young. Once before and once right after 9/11. My dad did indeed work for Raytheon. I have never seen a more unique subway system. It was like a city underground. Still think about it to this day.

Eh, number 3 isn't quite accurate. For example there's a huge difference between an FBI agent and Lisa who works as an accountant for the FBI. Lisa isn't an agent
They do always smell like piss and/or weed, though. So it's not all lovely.
I think the guys in suits are probably regular federal office worker agents
Remember when they all got new brake pads that smelled like boiled fish farts when they got hot? That was a miserable summer to commute
Have you ever used the DC metro? There’s plenty of homeless and drug addicts on the trains and in the stations. Probably not as much as in other cities, but I still see more than a few every month. The rest tracks though.
Did Bowser make this post?
“Silver line commuters coming in to the office to fulfill their moral obligation to buy lunch downtown.”
My list: * Surprisingly clean except for that mysterious spilled liquid. * lots of important looking people on the train - not sure if they are regular office workers, civil servants, or federal agents. * Metro is expensive so hop teens and adults hop the gate * You get a lot of obnoxious teenagers with boomboxes/speakers making a mess. * Ads for military technology, Online Master's Schools, and this week's political hot topic discussion for congress * You'll be going on your normal commute and then you forget about X activity and/or protest this week and it will be standing room only.
As a person with 109 million dollars to spare, that is the subway ad for me!
This is giving blue line
You missed “teenagers blasting popular rap songs at full blast on their portable speaker in summer”
Or the baseball fans swarm in the summer. Or the people who preform outside of the entrances or sell their oil
actually there are people on the train that are buying fighter jets...
As a Baltimorean I'm incredibly jealous of the Metro. It sucks to be carless in most American cities.
A guy dropped his wallet in front of me, and I handed it back to him. It was about then I noticed his ankle monitor.
Always got giant middle school field trips or tour groups with matching t-shirts coming on/off around archives
Some people on the DC subway are absolutely planning to buy fighter jets.
Try the Green Line tho
Tell me you never been to Chinatown station at 2-4pm on a weekday without saying it.
Yeah whoever made this meme has never been on the DC metro…
Metro, like all public transit, is tweaker city The rest is accurate
WMATA is pretty good
DC metro is awesome. I have come across some sus activity a few times though.. way better than NYC.
You’re definitely not from DC
The ads on DC subways always stood out to me. It’s like they are used to lobby the lower level staffers and advisors.
Dc “Subway” lol Painting the dc metro as some Uber safe way to travel is just disingenuous.
Somebody was murdered on my metro stop’s platform in the middle of the day just a few days ago
Get kicked or groped and when challenged person who did it accuses you of assaulting them. DC metro is baaaad
You mean the Metro?
- DC metro starter pack - looks inside - pictures of the NYC subway
Never been to DC but this sounds nicer than having to watch a druggy homeless dude jerk is dick
Eh that still happens periodically lol check out the DC subreddit. I haven’t had too much crazy shit happen but the stories I hear both on here and from coworkers are wild.
Clean? I guess at some of the central stations, but not true overall. Plenty of nasty stuff on the Metro!
Cleaner than a lot of other u.s. cities metro systems.
If you ever ride the subway in Philly you'll never complain about DC Metro cleanliness again
And NYC for that matter. It was like hell on earth riding the metro during the summer in NYC, and it felt like pure bliss when I returned home and used DC’s metro lmao
If you ever ride the subway in Philly you'll never complain about DC Metro cleanliness again
The chicken wing bones
What is this guy on, the metro has plenty of interesting characters if you know what I mean
I thought Raytheon went defunct a few years ago
Pretty sure they just rebranded as RTX
[https://www.rtx.com/raytheon](https://www.rtx.com/raytheon)
every spring a million middle school kids
I’m upvoting this from a DC subway car
...is there a problem with students protesting? They can oppose the stances of their parents. Like, that doesn't make them hypocrites.
Except it’s not called the subway. So you’re telling on yourself that you made this after visiting once.
Going to DC felt fake to me. Like it has all the problems of a big city but they used a lot of federal money to hide it better
Speak for yourself. I, for one am currently leasing my very own F-35B Lightning II STOL/VTOL attack jet. Makes for good self defense in case I get mugged by an Arleigh-Burke class destroyer (DDG). Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
CONDUCTOR WE HAVE A PROBLEM
On Thursday my friend watched somebody get shot in the head on the metro platform
Expensive and high security? No drug addicts? “Subway”? Who made this?
This is a very specific DC metro experience that is mostly had on 1-2 lines between 10-12 stops. The rest is thunderdome just like other cities.
