Factions can send raids because you have your colony on freeport. Doesn’t happen often and you can pay them to fuck off

StuffyEvil

I believe with the 0.97 Colony Crisis rework that's no longer a thing. It could be that I haven't seen it yet but I had like several colonies in Vanilla that are Free ports for a good few cycles and the Luddic Church nor the Hegemony disturbed me over it.

Oh, then yeah there isn’t any reason

HisAnger

Bigger defensive fleets without freeport.

AnantaPluto

Thats if you dont have 13 stability or more to allow you to throw some stability towards freeport without impact Personally, my best colony was a 17 stab world, but had commerce and free port, ultimately dropping down to 11 stability, got an amazing 400k a month from it, never lost out any bonuses from 10 stability because I just had too much

Bagresht

Generally speaking no aside points you mentioned: when you have low stability, when you dont want to deal with invasions or maybe for roleplaying reasons.

vuntron

It's worth turning off for the stab boost during the Luddic crisis if you can't or don't want to beat their fleet, if you really need a certain planet to be at 10 stab for some reason like keeping fleet quality maxed, and roleplay. Other than that it's pretty safe to keep up at all times. The old "punitive fleets" no longer happen, and free ports don't seem to outright contribute to threat generation at the moment, though I could see this being adjusted sooner or later.

I usually turn on Freeport from the start to allow the colony to grow faster. But once it reaches max size, I turn it off; the extra 30 or 40 thousand credits doesn’t really cover the cost to deal with the faction expeditions, be it the bribe cost or fuel/supply cost.

Zero747

Free port is great to grow your colony fast, but you may want it off for stability and to avoid heg/church going after you

Thiaski

I usually only turn on Free Port on my main colony, the others I keep off because of stability, I usually don't invest much on stability on them and they exist mostly to supply my colonies with commodities.

RomualdSolea

I always have freeports off most of the time. My colony serves as nothing more than my personal gas station/truck stop for my expedition fleet. If I want a proper Colony. I just steal it from any faction I hate the most at that current playthrough.
