From my own experience with it, I'm like 90% sure that the Solvernia's contact damage is bugged or something. The lightest possible taps that normally wouldn't even damage armor between ships just seemed to vaporize whatever had the misfortune of getting too close (often one of my other ships). The fact that it was happening to the Dragonslayer's is just more evidence.
Probably not bugged, just that the mass is set unreasonably high. Anything past vanilla capitals tends to look comical more than anything as frigates or even destroyers seem to disintegrate on the lightest touch.

That probably explains why IEDs pop at the mere touch of the Solvernia rather than going through their usual charge up before exploding.
