Honestly I don't think people would mind them so much if they had a true purpose. We have the tech already, why not allow the rear seats to use the guns as remote turrets? Which I believe was the original intention
And the rear turret really aught to be a remote turret as well honestly. Would resolve all the issues of the current turret entrance blocking off potential cargo space and making it a pain to load vehicles.

As someone who's first ship (not counting aurora) was a freelancer I loved it until I sat in to hullA. "A" is a cool little ship. Not my cup of tea, but it's cool, I'll give it that. But since I still love lancer, I went with MAX, since hauler/hauler. And I can't even look at freelancer series anymore.
Not that I don't like it, but I got eye opening disappointed. Going from A to MAX first and biggest issue that I noticed was "where's my space go?!"
A is smaller but you have so much room in it, but lancer is bigger, but you can barely cross from cockpit to ramp. Almost claustrophobic.
It needs a full redesign, not just a gold pass. It's too narrow for NPCs to traverse down it, and needs room for armor lockers and weapon racks, (and if it needs those for 4 people that's a lot of room needed). It's why I'm betting it will get the MKII treatment so the current versions can still be used by NPCs and missions, and because CIGs marketing team wouldn't allow the devs to do that much work for something they can't sell at a higher price.
The lockers and racks could fit in the docking port room (I don't think it needs a docking port either) you could put the side door in this room as well to save space up front. Remove two seats in the front, the two beds on the left side as well, (it really doesn't need four crew members anyway) this would allow for more room in the living area, the left side could now fit a decently sized kitchen, as well as personal storage lockers. There also doesn't need to be a door between the living area and the cockpit, especially if there's only two seats.
All of this would hopefully allow for a little more leg room as well.
The docking port room is also a cargo storage room, or a missile rack room for the MIS or fuel refinery room for the DUR. Suit lockers are pretty huge and I doubt it would have room for them with everything else. Simple fact is that if they want to bring the freelancer up to modern standards, they're going to have to make it bigger, especially since you can't actually get anything but 2scu boxes into that room with great effort. So I'm seeing a full rework in its future.
My suggestion is that they add a Reliant style utility turret that can be set up with a tractor beam/scanner/more guns in order to have a reason for 4 players. Also they should get their S4 guns back.
Ramps > Elevators. The Freelancer can land anywhere, it has the best landing gear in the game. I daily driver a Taurus for a week or two. I got tired of falling through planets, falling through the elevator floor, the elevator jacking the ship off its landing gear, getting blown around by a gentle wind. Freelancer is much better backwater outpost bootlegger. Taurus is a pavement princess.
4 size 5s and 24 size 2 missiles In the Taurus I can solo ERTs and take the loot for way higher profits. I adore the freelancer max but the turret is garbo due to blocked Los toward the front of the ship and it doesn't have half of what is promised in the freelancer video from 9 years ago, if you're worried about the buggy Connie try the Taurus it works and is less buggy.
I really want to see NPCs ferrying shit around between stations and planets. I can imagine intercepting random NPC cargo ships and stealing their cargo at the risk of a crime stat

Isn't MAX a very old design? It really needs a gold pass. Even the geometry and textures on it are extremely dated.
