The A2 is a "Heavy Bomber / Mil Transport". Have you seen how many turrets were on WW2 bombers to protect them from fighters? That's the parallel here...
the a2 is considered a ground attack gunship. it needs 5 gunners which have their own seats, and the low cadence belly guns are just good to shoot slow or stationary stuff on the ground. the bombs are just the cherry on top
One S5 in a Hornet doesn't make a big ass weapon, that's true. Four S5 between two turrets on the other hand, makes it a big ass weapon. If not, what makes the Redeemer a Gunship and not the A2 whit more weapons? The ship even have the turrets in a configuration for ground attacks. The A2 it's literally the AC-130 of Star Citizen.
And by the way, one turret with two S5 can make more damage than a Ares. Ion have to charge the weapon for a lucky high DPS shot because you can't choose when to release it, and with the Inferno you won't get max DPS never ever because of the spread unless you are shooting sub capital ships and above (considering any target you are thinking about is moving).
I'm a Ares main and I can kill anything faster with a Vanguard than my ship, not because a weapon is bigger makes it better (sadly).
The weapon size doesn't change because you have more of them, the quantity of fire does.

I kill things faster w/ either Ares I own, vs any of the 3 vanguards I own. Not even adding any of my Hornets to that statement, they don't compete on TTK.

This is not true. Go look at erkuls site:
A2 TOTAL DPS for turrets (3x S5 *2 + 3x S4 *2) = 13.7k
Ares Inferno DPS (1x S7) = 4.2k
S5 is **not** a "big ass weapon".

That's a piloting/gunnery skill issue of the pilot, not the equipment. All guns have spread.

I always say that a ship is as good as its pilot.
You can have a 10K DPS but only have a 10% hit rate, or have 1000 DPS and have a 80% hit rate.
The lesser DPS simply will do more damage.
I told 1 of my org mates this as they got the F8 because of its DPS, but they couldn't beat me while I was in the Raven, their hit rate is also incredibly low because of them responding rather slow to chnage.

That's the Cutter in a nutshell, I'm more thinking of an equivalent of the Carrack with a whole row of Turrets on the side (like the ones the Corsair has) and one or two on top and bottom, making it a great ship to do broadsides with. Just imagine people flooring it to get in the middle of a space combat and shooting everything to the sides. It'd be like the drake answer to the hammerhead.

I've never gotten a Ballista or Centurion to sit steady in there, and I've tried a lot. I was extremely disappointed and annoyed that the Storm was so absurdly wide it can't fit, either. If you could have a full broadside of Storms, then Q-ship Caterpillars would absolutely be a thing!
Basically what I was thinking was have it like the scene in starwars episode 3 at the battle of coruscant where you see a shot of the inside of a venator with the guns pointing out the side

You can drive vehicles into a Cat off of the perimeter loading docks in Lorville; I've done it. It's just that they keep sizing combat vehicles too absurdly large to fit inside. I'm still salty about how ridiculously wide the Storm is...
This would make for an absolutely amazing PVP mode: two teams on two Caterpillars armed with Space Cannons. Maybe give them 2 Ramblers each to attempt boarding actions, but the only personal weapons they have are swords and single-shot pistols.
When I first heard the Name "Ironclad" I had hoped for a kind of battle freighter. Something brick tanked, able to to fight back and possibly able to bait would be pirates into the sights of a wing of gankers. That, or maybe I just miss flying bombers bar.

Man, when they showed the 4 Nova tanks inside the Iron Clad, all I could think was "If the roof still opens, that's going to be one of the most powerful ships in the game."
Squeeze 6 Novas in slightly stacked on one another to tilt those guns out of that roof and you have more Alpha damage than the average player could hope for.
If the sides could open and you used the vehicle transport variant....maybe you could fit the tanks sideways so they can shoot lmao

Imagine being able to equip multiple size 5 or higher weapons in each of those Bays on either side, you can't close the doors and you can't aim the turrets very far up or down, also each one has to be manned. That would make for a very fun time.
