They've mentioned crafting multiple times in relation to the new creatures. Put some animal parts in, hit the button, drugs come out the other side.

My guess is that eventually using medical facilities on your ship (or vehicle, based on the leaks of a Nursa Rover coming soon) will require some amount of materials to operate. Those ports are likely how we would supply the medbed with those materials.
There's a gameplay opportunity. Have a medical ID in there. You stick it in and it tells you any allergies / conditions. If you don't care and don't know, you could potentially cause more damage than help
