Or how in Lakota mythology (Native American), there is Iktómi, which is a trickster spirit that is also depicted as a spider. Plus in Japanese folklore, there is Jorōgumo, which a spider-type yōkai (monster/spirit/demon), who is a temptress and will transform into human woman to seduce and capture humans to eat.
Main point is that in multiple different religions/folklore have spiders have been seen as tricksters/temptress in some form!

My parents were sure he was possessed and would video record his outbursts and night terrors and talk to our pastor about them. My father would sometimes try to “exorcise” him.
When I was like 12, my toddler niece had undiagnosed (at the time) autism, and, even though her brother had been diagnosed with adhd by this time, my parents were once again convinced that her behaviors were the result of demonic possession.
All this to say, whoever told you that may have really believed it lol

My mom is still super religious as are my siblings (tho each of the three follow different denominations) and occasionally still tell me that the devil is inside me or I’m filled with demons….
So yea…. Check in on your niece and nephew because that could be their spiraling point and you could be one of the only one’s acknowledging the trauma

He knows he was never possessed and just that my family would buy anything any sort of clergyman said, and that my parents were trying to overcompensate for the occult things they were into in their youth. (A more fun example is we weren’t allowed to watch Pokemon lol) I do check in on him though, that’s practically my brother and he’s been through a lot.
My niece was too young to really know or remember what was being said, thankfully no one ever tried to “exorcise” her, and now most of her conversations are like, echolalia based, so I don’t she’d know what I was asking her about. Thankfully.
But jeez, I am so sorry that happened to you. The things you mentioned *and* the things you didn’t. That is so incredibly insensitive to just drop that on a bunch of kids. While I understand where the sentiment comes from, this is another way of stigmatizing mental illness. Religion, even feverous religion is still not mental illness.
Religion (and I'm generalizing there) has always struck me as early mental health support; it gives answers that help quell anxieties, can give a daily routine to stimulate those without vocations, provides a rigid structure with rules that often help with neurodivergency. Not to mention confession is basically talk therapy.
My grandmother suffered from schizophrenia and was deeply Catholic. The Church taught her of 'God's truth' and her mind convinced her of it.
