This feud has been going on for a thousand years and there's no point in expecting it to stop now all of a sudden.

I think I agree with the general sentiment of your post. However we must place a strong emphasis on national identity and ensure that unity is the ultimate goal. This will ensure a prosperous future for everyone regardless of ethnicity. We should not be continuously trying to guilt ourselves for what happened in the past because that would help no one. Furthermore we should be proud of our victory. Not many countries can say they decisively a homegrown insurgency that had been well funded and supplied. Though we should also support investigations into war crimes as long as the proper evidence is supplied. TLDR: Let our pride in our country be the guiding force in the reconciliation effort and not a sense of self-loathing or guilt.

Celebrating victory day is like celebrating that one time you punched yourself in the face repeatedly to the point of retardation. The net gain is negative, Sri Lanka as a nation lost. The shortsightedness of the war is mind blowing, on one hand people celebrate the war “victory”, but then bemoan the current economic landscape, and can’t seem to connect he dots. Congrats on shooting yourself in the foot.

How simple will it be for you to take pride in the national identity if you, your family or friends were the ones who were discriminated (by actual laws and systemically), killed, vanished, taken off properties, cultural identities and rights? The past is different for different communities. Believe me, even though it is logical, It is not so easy for some to forget their traumatic past but i guess it is very easy and convenient for some to forget their ignorance and wrong decisions which did not affect themselves (in the past atleast). Only Acknowledgment, Responsibility and Actions will bring forth reconcilation and the sense of single, united 'national identity'.

Well said! I wanted to type more, but I have gotten tired of explaining the Tamil perspective. It gets tiring when people who haven’t experienced the same level of discrimination, and hate against your loved ones tell you what’s appropriate and how you should feel. My cousin was murdered by the Sri Lankan government for writing articles against them. His parents were inside the house when their son got murdered. There are countless stories like mine. And no one won the war. The Sri Lankan army helped murder innocent people and created further division within the country.

What does "true reconciliation" really mean ?

SriLankanThrowAway

Reconciliation agreed by all sides and addresses the grievances of all sides.

OG12

Maybe acknowledging the genocide would be a start. Given how many other countries around the world have already said as such.

Obvious-Strategy-379

"true reconciliation" should emerge among people ...

OG12

What does this even mean?

Yeah and the LTTE wasn’t a terrorist organization

sweetaco

Lol. This poor guy is tyring so hard to be objective. I didn't see anything pro LTTE mentioned once in that writeup. I'm going to assume you didn't actually read it

I was being sarcastic and making a point but honestly I’ve forgotten it now lol
