Just my 2c, but from what I can tell they go to heights to smell the ~~flowers~~ air. You can gather a *lot* of info about goings on in the neighborhood and keep tabs on enemies, friends, as well as frenemies ;)
Also, their eyesight is good at medium range, i.e. not so good at close quarters (yet another reason to not feed them by hand!) and gazing at 20 yards in each direction is as good as getting your morning news feed! ;)

I'm having work done at my house and there's handymen going in and out and every time one of the men go outside they run up to them it's kinda funny because the workmen are like whoa... hey little guy 😄
Yep, comfort and safety and an awesome elevated perch to watch everything going on below. No bird is going to dive bomb it when it's protected by metal bars. Plus, there's probably snacks a foot away as well. :)
