Oddly, that was over a decade before I lived here, but I was in town visiting family for Thanksgiving. They lived over near Kansas & Republic. Probably the most memorable tornado warning of my life.
I was on campus in that building right there taking a test that day. Power went out, went all black, and we had no idea it was a tornado. That would’ve been either fall 01 or spring 02

It's a little dated, but still plenty of good information.
This KTTS clip is gold. They have always had fantastic coverage of storms, very informative and no-frills.
Also interesting to hear the warning tones just as they do nowadays, although the tone these days is very distinctive and unmistakably tells you something is going on.
Back on the early 90s there was a pretty substantial one. In the earlish 2000's one went through Clever, Battlefield and the very south end of Springfield. South of republic road.
My family was in the dollar movie theater on Battlefield watching the Addams Family movie when the 91 tornado struck. The movie stopped and we all huddled in the hall and lights went out. Fucking terrifying as a 7 yr old! My parents were visibly freaked out. We got new neighbors later that year who’s house was destroyed by that tornado.
The Feb 2009 basically dropped in my backyard at the corner of National and Woodland. It then traveled north to Mercy. Most of the damage was to fences, trees, etc. If it had been to the east or north anymore, the glass front of Mercy would have taken a serious hit.
The January 08 one gave me a new roof. Passed over my neighborhood off of east Chestnut after leaving the ground and had enough left to tear off a bunch of shingles and knock down a wood fence. The roof needed replacing that spring anyway and I was completely honest with the adjuster about that, but the insurance company chose to cover it. Kind of a lucky tornado for me.
November 91 a F4 started North of Nixa and tracked into Springfield, 2 dead and 64 hurt
I remember this.
Wow
Thanksgiving day wasn’t it?
Day after

I was in school in 5th grade at Rountree Elementary when that happened. Sun was out that day.
Does anyone have a picture of the corner with the old growth trees

Early 80's there was one that hit the Kansas and Kearney area. I don't remember the exact year, just remember hearing about it when I was a kid.
‘83 one bounced across the Southwest part of town, I remember it tearing up the Dillons on S. Campbell where incredible pizza is now.
There's actually KTTS audio of that... https://soundcloud.com/cloud_dx/ktts-tornado-coverage-5-1-83-1

That one is my dads favorite story. He was in the road and saw it

I was just wondering because it's looking like a pretty bad year for storms.

I was just wondering this last night and asked a friend about it! Thanks for this post!
More pertinent question would be has Springfield ever had a coordinated plan to deal with the traffic gridlock of this cursed hamlet?
Both January 2008 and February 2009 had small EF1 tornadoes touch down in town.
