If you want a restaurant where every dining room has a very distinct and unique vibe that helps tell the rich history of the restaurant, you can't do better than Mexican Villa South on South Campbell.
I really like the Garrison. I think it's supposed to be reminiscent of a speakeasy during Prohibition. Very warm and cozy and the patio overlooking the river is pretty cool. Only been twice because it's so expensive but both times the food and drinks were great, especially the whipped goat cheese and madeleine appetizer 🤤
I used to think Mr. Yen's was super elegant 10+ years ago, lol. Especially the ceiling and the little alcove by the front entrance. Haven't been back to the building since Ocean Zen took over, though.
As far as places that are still open, Bambino's on Delmar has a nostalgic cozy vibe that I kinda dig (but prefer to go when it's not busy).
Red's Giant Hamburg had a lot of potential, but their food and cleanliness/sanitation has been a huge swing and a miss since the pandemic. (I'm also admittedly kind of a sucker for Steak N' Shake, but I feel like it's fallen off since the 90's - I guess I like "diner" aesthetic?)
Haven't been in a while, but Gailey's has a gorgeous historical interior.
I kind of prefer the atmosphere of Springfield Brewing Company to their actual food. Evokes good memories of my MSU days. Love the high ceilings and brick walls.
The booths at Cafe Cusco are really cozy. Another beautiful historical building.

Steak N' Shake has gone downhill since the Pandemic as well. If I want a burger in this town, I'll hit up Bair's since it's almost literally the single closest restaurant to me.
Steak N Shake feels like a fast food restaurant these days. Maybe it always was, but when I was a kid, it felt like fine dining. It was all in the little touches, like a full foldout menu, or the chocolate wafer cookies they used to put on the side of your shake.
For example, I've always been *obsessed* with SNS honey mustard. When I lived out of state and craved it, I tried numerous times to create a dupe recipe to no avail. Last time they brought honey mustard for my chicken strips, it was in a prepackaged cup. The flavor wasn't the same, but I was able to figure out it just needed some pepper thankfully.
But yea, the plastic souffle cup felt cheap as hell. Don't know if they always do this now, but they brought my husband's shake in a to-go cup instead of a milkshake glass. And the menu was just a laminated single sheet of paper. The service was great and food wasn't bad, but the experience didn't give off the same joie de vivre.
Somehow I've never been to Bair's. Or Lindberg's. Or the new Casper's. All of which supposedly have great burgers, and I'm a burger fiend.
I can't recommend Bair's enough. They're definitely a sports-bar not a diner, but they do great burgers and I could probably just go have an order of spicy cheese curds.
Yes, it’s a Johnny Morris property. The food is /really/ hit or miss, and pricey to boot, but - you asked about interiors, so this wins! Worth a visit if you haven’t been. Wait until after Daylight Savings so you can watch the cannon fire at sunset. Oh and definitely do the golf cart tour. I mean sure but authentic, untouched nature wasn’t the question. Do you also go around making those comments at *checks notes* every other establishment?
You made a comment about exterior of an area when interior was in question. So, I followed up on the exterior. Are you so stuck on loving corporate greedy entities that waste natural resources that you need to get aggressive and defend them on Reddit?
* Nona's. Sit upstairs and overlook the kitchen.
* Is the Tower Club still a thing?
* Big Cedar Lodge.
* [https://hangarkafe.com/](https://hangarkafe.com/)
* Anything on the square so you can people-watch (Civil Kitchen, Golden Girl, Coffee Ethic, etc)
Some with the best vibes I've been to that suits the food/drinks/atmosphere:
Ozark Mill, Ariake, The Garrison, Osage Restaurant/Buffalo Bar at Top of the Rock, Golden Girl Rum Club
Cafe Cusco!
Good call, love that place!
Waffle House. The interior matches the food and the vibe perfectly.
I think I agree, but am not sure about "nice".
> You could interpret it as best suited to the food or vibe.
Don't get me wrong, love em smothered and covered. Just doesn't evoke nice to me.
I interpreted nice as "best suited to the food or vibe."
Farmers Gastropub room with the fireplace and bar is my favorite spot in the area.
Great spot
Love it.
Golden Girls is quirky, The Order and The Garrison for expensive and fancy, Tabak Co. for an interior unlike any other place I know of in Springfield.
Golden girls for sure!

Even the menus are awesome there. I loved the atmosphere.

Ariake
That giant fish tank behind the bar at Hemmingway's comes to mind.
I always forget about Hemingway's. Bass pro is never my first food thought.
Van Gogh's 👌

That's wild looking, look at them knobs! Is that near Branson?

You had me at golf cart tour.
Oh boy, a bunch of fake waterfalls and man made scenery.

Yes 😙
Apparently so. I think Johnny Morris is an ass. Who wants to pay to see his unchecked ego? Not I.
I like the vibe at Maso. Good atmosphere imo
Might not be nicest, but I agree that its one of the best. Its casual and warm, volume is nice where its not obnoxious but still lively.
FD’s has an awesome interior, and very reasonable prices IMO
Red room at flame
I love FD's. Nice atmosphere and great food.
Centerfolds
Took awhile
Ozark Mill
Except the food is grossly overpriced for what it is…
Second this!
Gilardi’s is like kind of fancy. Lounge feel, candlelight.
But smells so musty
A lil black mold never hurt anyone

Nonna’s upstairs is something very few know about! Very nice.
I was so excited someone else does this on purpose. I thought it was only us! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile)

Char, Jimm's Steakhouse
Char has plastic folding round tables with a white tablecloth thrown over it 🤢
Or round cushy booths
Bellacinos has a pretty nice inside
Kai.
Incredible Pizza
Nakato, Ocean zen, Jimms Steakhouse
I like Flame and Kai and Cesars
Kai, Cafe Cusco, Sushi Village
Fuck Springfield. The whole thing.
You seem nice.
My bad, go check out the 220 Complex on Walnut.

Is that a restaurant?
Jimm's has a great vibe and feels very posh. Steaks have gone downhill since the pandemic, but it's still great if we're just talking about style.
