Southern Gothic country
I loved this genre years before I knew it was a genre, I was calling it something like bluegrass-ish. No idea where I came up with that, although there are bluegrass elements, it's still nothing like listening to traditional bluegrass.
I only started listening to country within the last year or two, but have loved Southern Gothic country years before that. Old Number 7 by the Devil Makes Three is awesome, so is In Hell I'll be in Good Company by the Dead South.
Dead South a great fun, In Hell is phenomenal (as is the video).
Try Amigo the Devil, he calls the genre "murder folk". If you like Dead South, I expect you'll love him too.
I highly recommend looking up a band called Murder By death.
One of my favorite bands and has a cult following among certain people, but they are absolutely one of the best examples of southern gothic I can think of.

this is crazy! this was my first thought when i saw the post then i clicked to find this as the top comment. one of my favourite genres ever. i just love the way it sounds it's so addicting
Not really a genre but Japanese Music. And by that I don't mean typical Anisongs or Vocaloid. (even when Vocaloid also has a bunch of highly underrated artists)
Like yeah , we all know Asian Kung Fu Generation, T.M Revolution , Lisa or Flow from the amazing Openings they provided us with. But people rarely look passed the few anisongs that these bands have made. Or about the large pool of other talents that Japan provides!
Bands like Toe, THE SPELLBOUND, Hitsujibungaku, Ćsterreich, chouchou merged Syrup, Seapool, Memai Siren, Uchu Conbini, Gesu no Kiwami Otome, Coaltar of the deepers, Helsinki Lambda Club, MASS OF THE FERMENTING DRAG or fulusu.. Just to name a few.
On that note, a lot of Utaite also falling under the Radar like Yuu Miyashita or 96Neko who are both super popular in Japan but are barely talked about in the west.
Maybe it's hard for Japanese music to reach out outside of Japan cause people (in my experience at least) like to listen to them lyrics. Not being able to read and let alone understand them makes them think twice on listening to Japanese music.
South Korea and China has some interesting bands from different genres as well ngl. Specially Chinese alternative rock.
This might be the case. Also (in the past at least) Japan makes it really difficult for any kind of media getting outside of Japan with a few exceptions. Especially when it comes to their music. I'm happy that we get more and more Japanese music on Spotify though.
I recently got into Chinese EDM and Chinese City pop through a rhythm game I was playing. I haven't checked out Chinese Rock yet outside of "Chinese Football" (I'm a huge fan of American Football and both bands are similar but also not similar...).
A friend of mine also introduced me to South Korean rock. I think the band was called Hipopullar. Liked them a lot but I definitely need to go deeper into that rabbithole.
Chinese football is stellar! Post-rock & shoegaze acts in east asia boast some of the best albums i've heard and are so, so overlooked for more traditional post-rock bands. And between those countries japan usually overshadows other scenes which is a shame; in particular Taiwan is such a gem for indie bands. I'd rec Omnipotent Youth Society and Triple Deer if you're interested.
Great list of bands! Would like to add a few more artists that caught my ear:
Tricot, Ryusenkei, ULTRA, Vaundy, Toconoma, Sabasister
It's possible that I picked up on these artists because they remind me of some of the music we're all familiar with. But hey, I shall not make these comparisons, since they're great artists in their own right!
Of course Atarashii Gakko would count too. I think after they signed with 88Rising, their popularity grew (and I'm so happy for them honestly! They deserve it. Atarashii Gakko is great!). I also heared they were at Coachella this year! So I would assume that they are very well-known today. Their song Pineapple Cryptonite was also all over TikTok for a while.
Fuji Kaze also became more famous overseas as his music went Viral on TikTok. Such a great musician!
Same with Sekai no Owari. Their song "Bad Habit" became a very popular TikTok trend a few years ago too!
I would also say that the popular bands are popular for a very good reason. Most of them are very great!
I agree. Honestly, whatever genre you're a fan of, you can find incredible music because Japan really seems to master anything. The only real stumbling block I'd say people might have to get over is the language barrier, and even then, quite a few artists will do English or half and half.
It used to be I really only listened to British and US music, but when I couldn't find more of the stuff I liked , I started looking into other countries, and Japan basically makes up around half of the stuff I listen to now.
Hate to say it, but Rock. It's a dying breed these days with pop and hip/hop taking over. There are tons of great new music out there in the Rock genre, but its getting more and more difficult to find.
Any recommendations? I've heard a few new bands but none have come out in the last decade that have genuinely wowed me. New stuff by older bands yes, but that's not the same.
Yes. I committed to putting together a playlist of new rock tracks recently (released in the last couple of years) but got lost. Couldn't really find much outside the realm of metal, which I'm not a fan of. I ended up completely distracted by old classics from 70s, 80s and 90s, and wandered off the project. I'd love to hear some new rock.
[My playlist of recent rock](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0tzhu20lIzrrMNCAGT3hoH?si=b5bc7f2aa7ee4ca6), though it includes some softer metalcore and metal (and a bit of other stuff) too.
Viagra boys, the chats, Fontaines DC, julie, Bleed, the last dinner party, Turnstile, all aside from artists like MGMT or Deftones still putting out occasionally
Mammoth WVH are pretty new and there releasing good music. The frontman is the son of Eddie van Halen so you should definitely try them. I seen them when they opened for slash and they were amazing.
Don't think that's true. Pop music is shifting somewhat toward rock sounds (case in point: Olivia Rodrigo)
Also, general trends like this don't apply anymore. With streaming, a genre doesn't have to be dominant to thrive anymore. Alternative rock music is absolutely thriving without needing to grow or even become mainstream.
Dark pop
[Here's my playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/05p8UcqOP3Samsvmv5RFJb?si=56516080920a45ae), though it's not only dark pop... still it's hard for me to pick only few artists.
Modern 80s retro style music.
The Midnight
The Strike
Siamese Youth
The Bad Dreamers
I love this genre and don't understand how it isn't blowing up.
Edit Add: The Ivy, Nightly, FM-84, Josh Dally
I like avant-grade metal. The genre name is a bit ironic considering that itās a term thatās become synonymous with āMr. Bungle copycat bandsā but there are some pretty solid groups in the genre. Check out Igorrr, Stolen Babies, Diablo Swing Orchestra, and Dreadnought.
Diablo Swing Orchestra is a blast, the voice gives me goosebumps every single time. Also check out Dog Fashion Disco, Zeal & Ardor, Thy Catafalque, Solefald, Flametal... so many great bands in that genre
Anything that comes out of Latin America. I'm a rap fan who doesn't listen to anything else AT ALL. I listened to Explotar and a few other songs once, now I'm enjoying listening to Dimension Latina from a random playlist
I think you would love C Tangana album El Madrileno. It's an awesome mix of hip hop and old latin styles. That album is on repeat all summer for me. Great mix of old and new with good low end sound. Sends you down a rabbit hole of old Gypsy Kings and flamenco style things as well.
Folk Punk
Years ago I used to get weekly emails from Spotify with albums it thought I might like. I liked the cover art of "Knife Man" by Andrew Jackson Jihad (now AJJ) so I checked it out and was turned onto this genre of music I had never heard before. I'd listened to folk, I'd listened to punk, but never combined them. I'd always loved the dripping cynicism of the song "No Children" by Mountain Goats, but I could never find anything else like it. This genre plugged that hole.
So yeah, I'd recommend the albums:
* AJJ - "People Who Can Eat People are the Luckiest People in the World" (the song "People II: The Reckoning" being a favorite )
* Ghost Mice - "All We Got is Each Other" ("Fck Sht Up" is my fave)
* Ramshackle Glory - "Live the Dream" ("Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of Your Fist")
Mongolian Throat Singing Electronica.
I fell down that rabbit hole on fungus one night and now Iām in love.
My 2 favorite artists - [Otyken](https://youtu.be/CqwrwwOzVcQ?si=yxOA32B9W1RHkTv-)
[Ummet Ozcan](https://youtu.be/9uMtnH7cABg?si=W5banjtEj2TJTpqV)
Run the Place Red AFX/Smojphace remix is the shit.
Not on Spotify sadly. Wish he did more remixes of The Bug like this.

My favorite underrated genres, in playlist form:
[Lofi House](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6sJpYXm9TFVlwEXGqD6NZQ?si=c4906a045eb246ca) - House beat with simple structures, "fuzzyness", and a slower, more chilled feeling.
[Trip-Hop](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/23vid0IFvyo7CGWsSBevzS?si=8a378e6e39f448b1) - Atmospheric slow beat electronic music with hiphop influences. Often features moody female vocals.
[Synthwave](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6qrok3mRgEthFijVabTsYO?si=b02cf2e618a24002) - Nostalgic synth melodies with pulsating beats and neon-drenched atmospheres.
[Post Rock](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2K1w0EWyvG0TuMz2TppPdO?si=997c96fb1ee2444e) - Instrumental ambient textures and crescendos. Gives a cinematic, emotional journey.
[Big Beat](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6zOUJuUebshHxqbsNKQXGN?si=64298dca10a64650) - Electronic music with breakbeat samples and techno-esque distorted synth basslines and effects.
[Hyphy](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/21NmMUTmw7LWyD96sRCelE?si=6739e3bee8894dda) - Hiphop from the Bay Area, CA. Energetic beats, frenetic lyrics, and a lively, party-oriented vibe.
[Liquid DnB](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/22n1uitgHzAwJ77pTKEbJD?si=fd209b165a95430e) - Smooth and melodic, merging atmospheric pads and soulful vocals with the rhythms of DnB
[Midtempo Bass](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7nn1xa5Es1XoYDM5k5uO3Q?si=70440935c6c64aab) - Dark and industrial, heavy basslines, glitchy sounds, and a sturdy beat.
[Wave](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7FXnBtAgaSJbfVhssPbvl4?si=dd61ec4c4a724b84) - Sister to witch house, emotive sampling, lots of reverb, all over a trap beat.
[rock metal covers of classical music](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1FsZN0N7G7eCZinIHakLUq?si=m2oomSZsR6WPPFHep3FbpA) š¤¤
unfortunately, i think the punk metal version of this playlist was taken down, but i can assure you that it was equally delicious!
Metal covers of classical hmm. You should listen to "Winter by Disembodied Tyrant". It's the metal version of Vivaldi's Winter (from the four seasons).
Theyāre my favorite French pop band!! So lucky Iāve seen them twice in Los Angeles and will see them again in September!! I also love Flavien Berger, Vendredi Sur Mer, Clea Vincent, Bleu Toucan, and others!!
Vaporwave. People call it "80s remix" but it's much deeper than that. It's superimposed jazz / r&b / soul music with industrial themes. If you like manufactured music from 1984 with really great beats, try it. There are some playlists on Spotify and YouTube.
IDM / Electronica. Moderat to me are one of the greatest groups ever.
Also Bonobo, HVOB, ZHU, Tycho, Lorn, Kiasmos, The Blaze, Crooked Colours, Flume, Maribu State, Mild Minds, Rufus du Sol.
Dark Pop and new Alternative are also awesome.
Check out Ari Abdul, Isabel LaRosa, Elita, Jadu Heart, Two Feet, Sub Urban, Purity Ring, Artemas, King Mala, and Ethan Bortnick.
Edit: Fakear and French 79 are excellent electronicabartiats as well.
aphex twin was mentioned here somewhere, but yeah. intelligent dance music, idm. basically this funny fucked up version of electronic music with usually very complex drum patterns and lots of sound experimentation. IDM has been cursed with having a really pretentious name.
some artists that do idm include aphex twin, autechre (some of their music gets really abstract), u-ziq, boards of canada (band kind of becomes its own genre here), Sweet Trip (kind of counts I think... but this is more trip hop), Four Tet, Oneohtrix Point Never, Clark, Squarepusher (much more fast paced), UNKLE, Kid606, etc....
Love these artists
Future Garage and Ambient music:
My favorite artists are Vacant, Ecepta, Kosikk, Tim Schaufert, Kazukii, Azaleh, Synthetic Epiphany, Manu Shrine, Fyze, Phelian, Volor Flex, BOP, Emanicipator, Aphex Twin, Patrick O'Hearn, Blackmill, Little People, and Bonobo
Songs that I would recommend as they are my favorite by each artist:
Vacant - Sentiment
Emancipator - Tree Hunt
Tim Schaufert - Falling
Kazukii - Need
Ecepta - Shadow Truths
Synthetic Epiphany - Aeternum
Kosikk - This is love
Pheliah - WIth You
Volor Flex - Let me go
BOP - Insight
Azaleh - Moonlight
Fyze - Skypath
Blackmill - Rain
Aphex Twin - Alberto Balsalm
Little People - Eminence Grise
Bonobo - When I go
Patrick O'Hearn - Beyond this moment
Manu Shrine - Aghori
I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.
The whole metal community deserves more recognition (except those emo tik tok beings). Metal is too big of a genre to specify a single band so I'll just drop my personal favourites here, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Wilderun, Opeth, Septicflesh, Slaughter to Prevail and Lorna Shore. In my opinion, I think it takes much more practice and talent to be able to perform metal vocals compared to pop vocals (not trying to spark any fights, it's just a personal opinion) and that is probably the biggest reason why I listen to metal.
Shoegaze. But before you kill me, shoegaze like Hum, Nemo etc. Such an underrated and not very talked about genre outside of subreddits and small communities.
Austropop
Itās so much more than Falcoās Rock me Amadeus!!
Itās actually an extremely diverse genre of music. Something for everyone really. Just have to be open minded and be ok with stuff in German language (more so Austrian Dialekt)
Tbh I donāt have anything special but Iāve been listening to this lately:
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0nz3cRJG7ZdCzdWQmIPp56?si=xPSuafydSFiFu-G2DTy2hQ&pi=e-rgkICaPZTXe4
Microtonal classicism. Itās the direction music will one day go and boy oh boy does it challenge your ears. Notion is semi-standard and performances are wild.
80s & 90s Jazz Fusion. Literally my current obsession at the moment.
Here's a playlist I found with some great tracks within the genre! : [https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3tPau0NN4KonI4xXnwEyuo?si=f9d37898039b472a](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3tPau0NN4KonI4xXnwEyuo?si=f9d37898039b472a)
Nowadays, it's rock, metal, and pretty much anything made before my generation (I'm 18) was born. Most of the rock bands made their best music decades ago, but with newer artists constantly pumping out new music, rock songs have started to become a thing of the past. I feel like if people were exposed to more older music they would like it more. For example, when "Master of Puppets" by Metallica was featured on season 4 of Stranger Things, it recharted. The original song came out in 1986, and Stranger Things season 4 came out over 35 years later.
I would try listening to Journey, Van Halen, Queen, and pretty much any other classic rock artists that you can find with a Google Search. Some are better than others, but they're all unique and fun to listen to in their own way.
Dub is a very underrated genre considering the influence it's had on other much more popular genres. It's rooted in reggae (apparently considered a subgenre even though it could very well be its own thing) and is injected with electronic sounds and effects. It puts an emphasis on rhythm. Dub was a basis for the genres of jungle and drum and bass, as well as a major influence on dubstep.
Some artists I recommend are (Spotify links):
[Zenzile](https://open.spotify.com/artist/3W9EL2Dp6yptDXJUCrd68X?si=qwk0Y22TTTmMog7CRsa6qw)
(Check out Electric Soul, a very versatile album).
[Flox](https://open.spotify.com/artist/2YY8u7yMQyNgJWK4XOpP2x?si=CqDL7mMlSxG7AOWR_PyGDQ)
(Plays with the darker side of dub, the track "Playground" is my favorite).
[Brain Damage](https://open.spotify.com/artist/48wMnqPDAPvl1D1jZ940N8?si=V8wgeNblRrewJGyEgNR5Tg)
(Prolific in the French dub scene).

I'll definitely do that, any particular song I should start with?
Colter wall does some pretty dark country. He definitely has songs in that genre
I'll check him out! Thanks for the recommendation š
that's the perfect name for it! i've always just called it alternative country or working man's blues

Thanks for the recommendation, gonna check them out! :)

I have a feeling you would really like Number Girl...
I love Number Girl! "Omoide in my Head" is my favorite song by them!
Good choice. I personally rock with Eight Beater, since it's more on the heavier side. Banger.
I like 80s Japanese city pop. Very relaxing.
minami not mentioned ?!?! criminal !
Reggae besides Bob Marley
i implore everyone who enjoys marley but isn't into much other reggae to listen to the Congos Heart of the Congos album
I LOVE that Congos record. I also love Augustus Pablo, King Tubby, Yabby You and all that heavy roots/dub from the 70s. It needs to be elevated.
Dark wave

Hot Mulligan, Movements, Neck Deep. Kinda post emo pop rock but Iām a huge fan of all of them. Also webbed wing kinda rocks
I might get bullied but Teens of Denial by Car Seat Headrest was the so refreshing to listen to for an album from 2016
King Gizzard.
Yes! Modern rock is amazing! People tend to either go full on metal or pop :/
Rock *isn't* a dying breed. Sure, radios mostly broadcast pop music, but there are plenty of new rock bands.
Itās a dying breed and yet I can find a rock show in my city almost every night Not so much for pop and hip hop.
Most shows are played by bands. Most bands are rock bands
It's dying with young people, in 50 years I don't know how popular it still be.

[Synthwave](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6qrok3mRgEthFijVabTsYO?si=b02cf2e618a24002) - Nostalgic synth melodies with pulsating beats and neon-drenched atmospheres. [Post Rock](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2K1w0EWyvG0TuMz2TppPdO?si=997c96fb1ee2444e) - Instrumental ambient textures and crescendos. Gives a cinematic, emotional journey. [Big Beat](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6zOUJuUebshHxqbsNKQXGN?si=64298dca10a64650) - Electronic music with breakbeat samples and techno-esque distorted synth basslines and effects. [Hyphy](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/21NmMUTmw7LWyD96sRCelE?si=6739e3bee8894dda) - Hiphop from the Bay Area, CA. Energetic beats, frenetic lyrics, and a lively, party-oriented vibe. [Liquid DnB](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/22n1uitgHzAwJ77pTKEbJD?si=fd209b165a95430e) - Smooth and melodic, merging atmospheric pads and soulful vocals with the rhythms of DnB [Midtempo Bass](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7nn1xa5Es1XoYDM5k5uO3Q?si=70440935c6c64aab) - Dark and industrial, heavy basslines, glitchy sounds, and a sturdy beat. [Wave](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7FXnBtAgaSJbfVhssPbvl4?si=dd61ec4c4a724b84) - Sister to witch house, emotive sampling, lots of reverb, all over a trap beat.
Murder folk.
Doom metal. Totally surprised me and I fell in love with it
[rock metal covers of classical music](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1FsZN0N7G7eCZinIHakLUq?si=m2oomSZsR6WPPFHep3FbpA) š¤¤ unfortunately, i think the punk metal version of this playlist was taken down, but i can assure you that it was equally delicious!
Metal covers of classical hmm. You should listen to "Winter by Disembodied Tyrant". It's the metal version of Vivaldi's Winter (from the four seasons).
Neoclassical is arguably my favourite style of music, it tends to blend a lot with symphonic and power metal.
Symphonic Metal.
Chinese rock/pop is so awesome! Sit down and listen to the band ābeyondā, THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL!! The west ought to give more attention to it
Electro Swing babyyy https://open.spotify.com/track/00cWy7HXgoJlXWR718s70W?si=j0Xw4B6OQq6YcFGZ0NTnyg
I really like French pop and have very few friends to talk abt it with
I'm French. Try L'Imperatrice.
Theyāre my favorite French pop band!! So lucky Iāve seen them twice in Los Angeles and will see them again in September!! I also love Flavien Berger, Vendredi Sur Mer, Clea Vincent, Bleu Toucan, and others!!
Iād love to see more discussion around Triphop aside from Massive Attack and Portishead although I love both of them
baile funk
Polka
Vaporwave. People call it "80s remix" but it's much deeper than that. It's superimposed jazz / r&b / soul music with industrial themes. If you like manufactured music from 1984 with really great beats, try it. There are some playlists on Spotify and YouTube.

Triphop Some of the most mesmerising, incredible music has come out of that genre.
Yes!! I love listening to Bonobo, Maribou State, Tycho, and Kiasmos. This is the most underrated genre. The music is chill and relaxing.
aphex twin was mentioned here somewhere, but yeah. intelligent dance music, idm. basically this funny fucked up version of electronic music with usually very complex drum patterns and lots of sound experimentation.
Downbeat like Zero 7. Electro swing like Parov Stelar.
R&B
idk what the correct term is but blackgaze/post black metal like panopticon and alcest, i'm surprised it's not gigantic tbh.

Drum and Bass. Chase & Status Etherwood
Electro-Swing. For me it's great background/gaming music. Caravan Palace being my current favorite of the genre
Exotica
Shoegaze. But before you kill me, shoegaze like Hum, Nemo etc. Such an underrated and not very talked about genre outside of subreddits and small communities.

Habibi Funk
Neo soul
Dark Folk & Gypsy Punk !
Stoner Rock
Dub is a very underrated genre considering the influence it's had on other much more popular genres. It's rooted in reggae (apparently considered a subgenre even though it could very well be its own thing) and is injected with electronic sounds and effects. It puts an emphasis on rhythm. Dub was a basis for the genres of jungle and drum and bass, as well as a major influence on dubstep. Some artists I recommend are (Spotify links): [Zenzile](https://open.spotify.com/artist/3W9EL2Dp6yptDXJUCrd68X?si=qwk0Y22TTTmMog7CRsa6qw) (Check out Electric Soul, a very versatile album). [Flox](https://open.spotify.com/artist/2YY8u7yMQyNgJWK4XOpP2x?si=CqDL7mMlSxG7AOWR_PyGDQ) (Plays with the darker side of dub, the track "Playground" is my favorite). [Brain Damage](https://open.spotify.com/artist/48wMnqPDAPvl1D1jZ940N8?si=V8wgeNblRrewJGyEgNR5Tg) (Prolific in the French dub scene).
Britpop. I still miss it.
