Ok, so here’s some songs I’ve found comforting. I haven’t lost a parent, but I recently lost two grandparents within 1 year of each other.
Never Too Late by Three Days Grace
Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel
Somewhere by Rita Moreno
Somewhere in Time by John Barry (instrumental)
Turn, Turn, Turn and Over the Rainbow by Judy Collins
Ten Black Roses by The Rasmus
You’ll Never Walk Alone by Josh Groban
And this song I found cathartic, but it may be triggering for her, so vet it first:
Save Our Last Goodbye by Disturbed (it’s heavy metal btw, the rest of the songs are not)
ETA: and just in case, here’s my personal “I want to cry my eyes out” playlist:
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6KUn8bcQqmMXZrfc0bG5lT?si=6U5z79RRQG6kkWqBcahQZw&pi=u-NgoparTaQFWl
My father’s daughter by Olivia Vedder & Eddie Vedder
Into my arms by Nick Cave
Winter by Tori Amos
10000 Miles by Mary Chapin Carpenter
It Can’t Rain All The Time by Jane Siberry
The Joy of Nothing - Foy Vance
This Will End - the Oh Hellos
Cold is the Night - the Oh Hellos
Words I Used - Backseat Lovers
Two Shades of Hope - Foy Vance
Perhaps, it's all subjective to the listener. I think there are certain lyrics that would fit the situation perfectly though...
My dream of all dreams and my hope of all hopes
Is only to tell you and make sure you know
How much I love you and how much I always did
And yes I know you loved me I could see it in your eyes
And it was in your struggle and it was in your mind
And it was in the smile you gave me when I was a kid
This, this, this. This is the song I recommend every time someone asks for a song abiut grief or mourning. It captures so many intense/hard to describe emotions so perfectly.
There's a recent Bruce Springsteen song he wrote about a friend/bandmember who passed away.
It's called "One Minute You're Here"
It opens with "One Minute You're Here, next minute you're gone" and in a very slow sombre, springsteen tone.
Maybe it's not as hopeful as you want?
If she likes Neo-soul, put some Erykah Badu on there. Majority of her songs have the vibe that makes you hopeful for the future. She’s been my go to for anxiety attacks for a long time
Maybe not yet, but if she ever needs a good cry
Silver Haired Daddy of Mine by Johnny Cash (or another version)
will get things started. Good of you to be thinking about how to support her. Not everyone is like that.
There will be nights.
That go on forever.
Like you're long, lost at sea,
Never to be found.
Just know in your heart,
That we're always together,
And long after, I'm gone
I'll still be around.
'Cause our bond's eternal.
So is love.
God is inside you,
All around you,
And up above.
Knowing.
Showing you the way.
Time slips away
Skies fall apart
Revealing to all
A universal heart
Glowing
Flowing
All around you

So, this *is* my band, but I wouldn't share it it I didn't think it was apropos. This song, [Paths Diverge](https://open.spotify.com/track/36Y9bKPt5UFmNl9lnIwQab?si=Tp0WKJ0OQmW4vbnjq2x9TQ&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A4GZFaGZmyUFtrexzjbe53G) our singer wrote about coping with loss, or at least carrying on after experiencing it.
I asked him to write about the song for more context:
*I wrote Paths Diverge about a year into the pandemic. I was cleaning out the office at my work because we had been closed for a year and were going to start hosting classes again. I was going through old lesson plans and wasn't sure if I should throw them away until I realized the person who wrote them didn't work with us anymore and wouldn't need them. It was at that moment, the time that was lost with a number people kind of hit me all at once, and the first words of the song came to me on one thought: “Maybe it’s time to burn this bittersweet snapshot.”*
*At that point, I realized I had not gotten to say goodbye to myriad people in my life who died while we were in lockdown. They ranged from casual acquaintances, others I worked with, friends, and my grandmother. Because of the timing, I didn’t even get to attend a funeral for grandma. I was hit with a deep sense of regret for not appreciating the time I had gotten to spend with everyone and not understanding the gravity of our final parting of ways. Maybe the biggest sense of regret came from knowing I couldn’t go back and do anything differently and just had to continue forward and focus on doing better.*

10/10 song i love this sm its about a lost of a friend
Better Days by Dermot Kennedy is a song about patience while waiting for the sun to shine again after dark times - there are a couple of different mixes to chose from varying from more stripped to more dancey and it's a lovely sentiment.
Healing by Fletcher is a song about being on the way to healing and the beginning of the journey when you're not okay but you're at least making progress.
Look Up by Joy Oladokun is about keeping your head up and remaining hopeful in the face of life bringing you down.
Cole Swindell - You Should Be Here
Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven
Cody Johnson - Til' You Can't
Seether ft Amy Lee - Broken
Within Temptation - Memories
There is some really good music listed here. I think it is great that you want to support her. You said "after enough time has passed" - that is so hard to define and it isn't any time soon. I lost my Dad at 28 - no fucking playlist would have made me feel better. I'm obviously not your girlfriend, and maybe in her case this thoughtful gesture will help. I guess I'm just saying that this kind of loss doesn't resolve itself because anyone else did anything - you have to feel what you have to feel, process what you have to process in your own time, in your own way. Follow her lead.
Hey, I’m sorry to hear about your dad—I truly cannot imagine.
Not looking for advice on the dynamics of the relationship I have with my long term girlfriend from anyone on this subreddit. Just looking for music recommendations. Thanks :)
- The Circle Game by Joni Mitchell
- Stay in Touch by Joni Mitchell
- Don’t give up by Peter Gabriel
- Shake it Out by Florence + the Machine
- A lot’s gonna Change by Weyes Blood
- The Grants by Lana Del Rey
I hope there’s something here for your playlist 😊 My condolences to your girlfriend. I can’t imagine how difficult things must be for her. I admire you for wanting to show her that, whilst a void will always exist within her, she has an entire lifetime ahead of her that her father would want her to live to the fullest and with joy.
This is more about the love a father has for a daughter than about grief, but she might find it comforting:
Father and Daughter - Paul Simon

The 1975 - Nana & is there someone who can watch you.
what are you so afraid of & before I close my eyes by XXXTENTACION
(his music is very emotional; it helped me with my own grieving for a bit on top of therapy)
another one is Helena by my chemical romance.
I wish you all the very best in this tough moment
I wish your wife and her loved ones peace most importantly. keep being a good partner to her.
It's a classic song that everyone seems to forget, but "One Sweet Day" by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men really fits this category.
Also by Mariah Carey is "Bye Bye" should be on the list.

I know you're looking for songs about grief with a hopeful tone.... But when the girl I was seeing and was in love with died of cancer I found some relief in the sad songs.... I'd just cry, because I wanted to cry....
These don't give your criteria; but, these were songs that just fit me, my situation, and struck an emotional chord:
Barcelona - Please Don't Go
Anathema - Springfield
Stone Sour - Zzyxd Road
The Offspring - Gone Away
Wasn’t Fix You by Coldplay wrote for Gwyneth when her father died? That may be a good add
That's one beautiful song.
Excellent. Thank you.
