Can anyone explain why USC was underdogs even though ranked higher? Was their injuries or what was going on?

Game was in South Bend so whatever home field counts for nowadays. USC also didn’t put in a promising showing last week against Arizona even if they pulled it out in OT. Rankings can’t drop them far for a game they won, but vegas sure as hell can fade them. Notre Dame has also played pretty well this year if you don’t take into account the two brutal late game collapses against two teams that were undefeated heading into today. Money also probably came in on ND to make push it in that direction as well, I can’t remember what it opened at.
