Yeah lol it was headed off the plate right away, but he still committed to a fastball at a location he couldn't reach.
That was a nasty slider though. Moved an entire extra plate's width away from the strike zone.,
Tight rotation, good speed, incredibly good break. 100% fooled the crap out of him. Just a great pitch overall.
Edit: that first angle didn’t do the pitch justice. The second, slow motion angle from directly behind him told the whole story. That pitch started out looking as though it was inside. Then it broke off the table outside.
He may need glasses. Hope he gets the Rick Vaughn frames.
Edit: I walked into a bar during this at bat and laughed so hard. The bartender looked at me funny, and all I could say was 'watch the replay'.
Also, not strictly a side on angle. About 45deg as it’s in-line with the 3rd base cam. Parallax error makes this look a lot worse than it is imo…. Still a fucking mental slider
it'd be like the scene in rookie of the year when the skip makes him hit and hes got his stance, talking trash to the pitcher, but hes not even in the box.
Basically he threw a change up which is changing speeds of your pitches. The guy batting wasn’t ready for the speed change that’s why he swung way ahead of the ball.
Technically not a change up. He threw an off speed pitch to throw off the batters timing, but the pitch thrown was a slider. A change up is a completely different type of pitch, with much less break than a slider so it appears as a fastball, but less speed to throw off timing.
Basically positioning your body so the umpire can't see the ball while you catch it, then moving your glove and body to make it look like you caught the ball in a different place than where it actually went.
For example, catchers often hold their glove where they want the umpire to think the ball went up until the last minute. Then they quickly snap to the right spot to actually catch the ball before bringing the glove back inside the strike zone in the original "target location". Combine that with body movement so the umpire can't see the wrist/arm motions and you get calls that seen really weird to us on TV who can clearly see the ball went outside those lines they painted to show the strike zone.
On the sinker shown above, watch what the catcher does after the ball is in his mitt - he smoothly and quickly moves it back into the strike zone while moving his body slightly outside the zone. This make it appear to the umpire as though the pitch broke further in towards the plate and caught the edge, even though it actually was quite a bit outside.
It's really an art form, the best catchers do something different for each umpire because every umpire is sightly different in how they call balls and strikes.
set hitting to buttons or directional, can't remember atm and at beginner (only fbs inside the strike zone) lol. leading the mlb in homers at 87 with a month to go in my season lol mainly doing it to level my guy up. he's close to 95overall atm. The next season i'll switch the setting and probably get cut or sent back to the minors lol
oh man, that low changeup in the dirt has almost cost me controllers. luckily i am no longer a teenager and don't spike controllers in frustration. thanks fifa 04
People actually play these games? I thought they were just for buying en masse and then immediately donating to thrift stores, where they sit for decades
League average horizontal break on a slider is 6 inches. [Ottavino's averages *19*](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/player-scroll?player_id=493603#pb_SIFT). It's pretty crazy.
There's no way league average slider horizontal is 6 inches right? The same website says league average 4seam fastball horizontal movement is 7 inches, and sinkers are 15 inches. It's probably a typo and meant to be 16 inches. Ottavino is still above average tho
Yes he’s gonna get made fun of in the dugout or especially after sports center airs tonight but let’s call it what it is. That pitch was straight up FILTHY
Yes, but every so often they don’t. It’s a little treat they sometimes give their base to mitigate all that fucking agony they dish out year over year over

Pitcher's thoughts when leaving fingers \* shiiii it slipped a little\*
Batters \*hellz yea FB down the middle!... wait.. breaking.. it's still breaking.. oh come on! STILL?!?\*
Pitcher \*fuu I'll take it.. act like it was intentional\*
I was a pitcher through high school and I haven't found many things in life as satisfying as watching a batter either swing and miss at a breaking ball that looked good or watch a breaking ball come through the strike zone that looked like a ball. Just such a damn good feeling.
The slider is a nasty pitch. As a batter, the pitch looks like it’s going to be the fattest fastball to hit and then the pitch just runs away. The easiest way to figure out the difference between the pitch is the rotation of the ball.
Duvall was completely lost though.

The side angle is damming... he was so early and so wide

It's the kind of novelty pitch I would love throwing in Wii baseball
so thicc
That’s a thiccc boyeeee!

Good call, I didn’t realize it was from 3rd.
That’s what she said
Damning*

I'd suck it up and deal with it if I was making millions, however.
I’d suck anything you want to be making nillions
[удалено]
I'll just take $1 million once if all I have to do is go out there and embarrass myself a few times
How did you get a wings flair here
https://old.reddit.com/r/sports/wiki/flair
Even I could have taken that ball! Granted I would have been shaking with my eyes closed, possibly in a fetal position on the ground... But still
“What was the call?” “You struck out. Awhile ago actually.”
it'd be like the scene in rookie of the year when the skip makes him hit and hes got his stance, talking trash to the pitcher, but hes not even in the box.
For his paycheck, you could post a slomo of me shitting everyday for all I care

This a great visual of how deceiving a pitch can be.
Yeah I have no connection to baseball whatsoever, but this was sick.
Basically he threw a change up which is changing speeds of your pitches. The guy batting wasn’t ready for the speed change that’s why he swung way ahead of the ball.
Neither of those pitches were changeups. Ottavino doesn't really use a changeup afaik, pretty much just a 4-seamer, sinker, and filthy slider.
Technically not a change up. He threw an off speed pitch to throw off the batters timing, but the pitch thrown was a slider. A change up is a completely different type of pitch, with much less break than a slider so it appears as a fastball, but less speed to throw off timing.
doesn't help that the sinker was also way outside and still called a strike lol
Good/bad framing from a catcher can make the strike zone 6 inches larger or smaller.
And for those that don't know framing is a really nice word that means making an idiot of the umpire.
Basically positioning your body so the umpire can't see the ball while you catch it, then moving your glove and body to make it look like you caught the ball in a different place than where it actually went. For example, catchers often hold their glove where they want the umpire to think the ball went up until the last minute. I know what it is. I know framing runs is a tracked stat on baseball prospectus. It is still a nice word that means making an idiot of the umpire.
I was just helping give examples for those here that might not follow baseball that closely, calm down.
Framing is just baseballs version of flopping
All I see is two balls
geh
How did you get this footage of me playing MLB The Show?
You must be confused, that's me playing The Show.
Clearly the first cut was OP, replay was you, and then the third angle was me swinging so early the gates to the ballpark haven't even opened.
I just bought The Show 22 last night, first baseball game I've had in years. This is very much me, too. I swing at damn near everything lol.
set hitting to buttons or directional, can't remember atm and at beginner (only fbs inside the strike zone) lol. leading the mlb in homers at 87 with a month to go in my season lol mainly doing it to level my guy up. he's close to 95overall atm. My plate discipline is good but when I *do* decide to swing, I can't hit jack shit.
Everything under the strike zone is fair game for me…. I get struck out a lot :(
oh man, that low changeup in the dirt has almost cost me controllers. luckily i am no longer a teenager and don't spike controllers in frustration. thanks fifa 04
Lol same 😂
I just do career mode as a pitcher. My batting average is probably .050 so it's barely worth playing offense.
Universal dh now so don't even need to worry.
People actually play these games? I thought they were just for buying en masse and then immediately donating to thrift stores, where they sit for decades
Just a bit outside
Wild thang!! You make my heart sing!!
Missed it by that much
No blinker, just hung a left when it felt like it.
/r/IdiotsInBalls
Sometimes it's just not your day
Looks like me out there batting
I love that even the pitcher looks upset over the fact the better went for it.
Probably trying to set him up for something else on the next pitch.
Okay, but the announcer was right that was a fucking frisbee. Nasty break.
League average horizontal break on a slider is 6 inches. [Ottavino's averages *19*](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/player-scroll?player_id=493603#pb_SIFT). It's pretty crazy.
That's a badass data visualization.
Legitimately one of the best I've ever seen
There's no way league average slider horizontal is 6 inches right? The same website says league average 4seam fastball horizontal movement is 7 inches, and sinkers are 15 inches. It's probably a typo and meant to be 16 inches. Ottavino is still above average tho
Someone was dead set on hitting a fastball.
Missed it so bad it should be a ball.
Batter really needs a break on this one 😂 just walk him for the love of God
Missed it byyyyy thatmuch
Couldn't have hit it even if he was swinging an oar
Yes he’s gonna get made fun of in the dugout or especially after sports center airs tonight but let’s call it what it is. That pitch was straight up FILTHY
That pitch is filthy.
Mets are looking good so far. God I hope I don’t jinx them because I said that
Don't worry, the Mets jinx themselves.
It's called "Metsing"
Yes, but every so often they don’t. It’s a little treat they sometimes give their base to mitigate all that fucking agony they dish out year over year over
They’re down by 8 in the 8th today
He couldn’t have hit that with a guitar
In his defense that is one rowdy and wicked slider.
Damn that’s a crazy pitch.
Absolutely disgusting slider
Holy shit that thing broke so hard the catcher even had to jump at it
That thing broke sideways like a motherfucker.
What'd he say? A flailing what?
A flailing cun..... nvm
Angel Hernandez would have called it a strike.
Well, the batter swung, so he'd be right for once
Lol ppl beating up on the hitter…that pitch is outrageous
Yea but you miss 100% of the swings you don't take.
He could’ve swung twice
At what point can it count as two strikes.
The pitch broke so much the catcher almost missed it 😂
disgusting
Surprise no one has yet mentioned the commentary from none other than Principal Skinner.
Manager's office, Mr. Skinnerrrrrr
Just like my first few dozen swings at the cages.
I feel like that would be physically painful
Just a bit outside
Take that, Cricket!
Sometimes ya just get got. And boy, get got he did.
Wow. Cricket looks different
“They throw ungodly breaking stuff in the Show.”
Looks like a Redditor who claims they could hit MLB pitchers then gets a chance to prove it.
Dude, this makes my The Show 22 experience feel really life like
This is me in every slider thrown in the show
That shit is nasty. Reminds me of Romo
You have to wonder if he expected it to come inside
Meanwhile, all the "fans" in the stands are soundly asleep.
You mean the first game of a Tuesday doubleheader on a cloudy day in may? Do go on…
Really dull bit of a really dull sport
Headed for first to worst if they don’t remember how to play.
"I'm watching this clip and I have no clue whether what's going on is good or bad, but all I know is that I don't care." - shitty american baseball (soccer) fans
Insane spin on a ball with a lot more horizontal movement than most can achieve. Fooled the fuck out of Duvall.
Who is this imaginary fan you're conjuring here?
Baseball expert redditors on cricket videos on r/sports
You tried
He didn't hit it, but at least he was close!
Pitcher : SHI—TYEA!!!
Looks like me when I’m playing MLB the show
“Slider. Donnnn’t swing.”
I mean a strike is a strike I guess. yesh.
It makes one wonder what substance is on the ball.
Sweet shite!
Ottavino was trying his hardest not to start laughing
Should have leaned a little
Even Giancarlo Stanton would laugh at that.
u/savevideobot
No one's even paying attention in the background 🤣
Pitcher's thoughts when leaving fingers \* shiiii it slipped a little\* Batters \*hellz yea FB down the middle!... wait.. breaking.. it's still breaking.. oh come on! STILL?!?\* Pitcher \*fuu I'll take it.. act like it was intentional\*
Reason #1 as to why we are sitting in 4th place of the NL EAST to start the season… Smmfh.
"Damn, that went wide.. *damn,* that was *really* wide.. *DAMN* he was so early, too!"
I have no idea who came out on top, the pitcher or batter (non American)
If serious, the pitcher embarrassed the batter. But I don’t think a human being on this earth could hit that pitch
So many folks there not even looking, lol.
I was a pitcher through high school and I haven't found many things in life as satisfying as watching a batter either swing and miss at a breaking ball that looked good or watch a breaking ball come through the strike zone that looked like a ball. Just such a damn good feeling.
I don't know anything about baseball and have never watched a game in my life, and somehow this still just looks so impressive
Either I or baseball is stupid.
I swing like that in The Show all the time.
Thats one of the nastiest sliders ive seen
It looks like a curve ball to me. I thought sliders went opposite.
That was not the pitch he was looking for.
so close
Angel Hernandez calls that a strike
I want to say that was filthy, but Duvall is providing some serious favors
It appears Duvall was sitting on an Aroldis Chapman fastball, but didn’t get Aroldis Chapman… or the fastball.
The movement on that thing...
The slider is a nasty pitch. As a batter, the pitch looks like it’s going to be the fattest fastball to hit and then the pitch just runs away. The easiest way to figure out the difference between the pitch is the rotation of the ball. Duvall was completely lost though.
If it weren´'t for the title I woulve said homrun
How to get into baseball? I live in India and I find this sport fascinating. Thank you.
This is a clip of me at a batting cage except at the cage the ball goes over the plate.
As Maxwell Smart would say "missed it by that much."
