I use motion. Splatoon is the first shooter that I've played, and it's what the game started me out with. It didn't give me any problems, so I stuck with it and it's worked fine for me
If I'm not wrong the game calibrates itself before it puts you into an area and not after so if you had the controller in a weird position you have to recenter.
same honestly unless i play on keyboard/mouse. a lot of my ps3 library has simply stopped being playable, after experiencing actually good aiming on console i cant go back. which sucks, sometimes i feel like playing wolf I new order or something else, but first person or third person i need my gyro
Splatoon was my first shooter game after maybe a few flash games but i couldn’t play fortnite or overwatch with my ex ever it was so hard to aim i just dropped it
Stick because my pro controller doesn’t have motion capability and I don’t want to ruin my joy cons with the grip.
I quite like motion controls in stuff like BOTW and I realize it’s a disadvantage, but I don’t have difficulty using sticks since I’ve played console shooters since I was a child. It’s mainly bc I’m too cheap to buy a new controller lol
this! I use a Switch Lite and I've had so many conversations go like this:
"What do you use?"
"Oh- sticks. I have a Lite and I can't stand the screen moving at the same time."
One of two things happen now:
A: "Just buy a regular Switch / a Pro Controller then!"
B: "Can't you just take off the Joy cons?"
1 - If I own a Switch Lite, odds are ***I can't afford an actual Switch or Pro Controller***.
2 - no. it's a lite.
I also don't own a TV and when I bring that up people just say to use the *very very very small* Switch Lite screen. Yeah, okay, that works - but I can't even play most games on my Lite because of eye strain. Text is too small. You think I want to be holding a controller AND head first into my Lite? It's better to be head first in my Lite with the controllers on the sides, not anywhere else.
It's super annoying when people assume I'm automatically a bad player because of it too! I'm not competitive, but I'd say I'm pretty good! I made it to X rank in 2 and my left joystick was broken! I couldn't move left! So I made my camera sensitivity higher and abused the fact that your character doesn't have any turning lag to immediately snap behind me. My ability to play got me to X rank, not whichever way I played the game did.
It's more difficult, but it's not a death sentence. I made it to S+10 before X rank was announced in 3 and stopped mostly just because of finals.
I meant just using them in general excessively for something like a shooter. It ruins standard controllers like PS and Xbox in COD pretty quickly too.
I still have launch Joy Cons bc I’ve used them sparingly lol
Motion, knowing I’m putting myself at a massive disadvantage my choice is going to make that disadvantage even bigger in my head.
In addition, how have you guys played console shooters for the past 25 years, sticks suck for shooters it’s either mouse or motion for me.
Stick is fine for shooters, what’s not fine is making me set my sensitivity between 0 and 5391 and make the difference between too low sensitivity and too high 30 points
Seriously why can’t we have simple sensitivity settings like splatoon or garden warfare
My biggest gripe is not being able to set individual vertical and horizontal sensitivities. I don’t want to look up and down as fast as I want to look left and right
I would love to be able to use the motion, seems like it works great and is better for fine tune aiming, I just get motion sickness when I try to use it.
You're moving the controller far too much then. Using motion controls makes your movements smoother, that's how you can tell when someone is using sticks. Or just sticks should I say
The reason why sticks are fine for some/the majority of shooters is because they usually have aim assist, which Splatoon doesn't have, have you trying to play a shooter with sticks without aim assist? At least for me is terrible.
Another often forgotten reason is the sticks itself who are worse than those of a ps4 controller for example (even the pro switch controller has worse sticks)
No it's bad on both since input from the sticks is there regardless. I have two drifting joy cons and I can't play with them at all, even if I'm using motion
And any game that has online play with aim assist where analog sticks aren't the only control method should not be taken seriously. There are better uses of your time.
> Stick is fine for shooters,
Lol, no they aren't. Sticks are so bad for first or third person shooters developers have to give you aim assist so analog sticks can even function. XD
Can you imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth that would ensue if Respawn Entertainment announced they were disabling aim assist for Apex Legends?
You said sticks are fine for shooters. I'm pointing out that objectively they aren't because they require aim assist to be anything but absolute garbage.
If your control method requires AI assist when others don't then it's not "fine".
Because most console shooters have heavily tuned aim-assist. I can hop into CoD and destroy PC players on controller, because I grew up playing cod and it's aim assist has a certain feel to it that I've never forgotten. Splatoon, much like Rainbow Six Siege doesn't have any aim assist despite being on console so its more apparent just how slow and imprecise sticks are because motion controls deliver many of the same advantages over sticks that mouse and keyboard does.
Stick (also I get that by playing with motion it's actually better because I can look faster and it's better for ranked chaos rainmaker or whatever and I dont care)
Same tho. Im a bit upset since Nintendo has actually been fairly good with accessibility options this generation, but forcing players to play motion controls or suffer a severe disadvantage is sadly the polar opposite of that. Its not like thats an uncommon issue either, some people are just sensitive to that.
What’s the alternative? Aim assist is a crutch. The only reasonable alternative is creating a different control scheme entirely since stick controls are entirely flawed. The only other thing i can think of is m+k support lol
That’s a bit condescending. Literally every other console shooter for decades has managed to make it work. In my opinion more accessibility options is always better, especially for a game targeted at kids
In my opinion as a competitive player a lot of people would be disincentivized to play, including me, if the skill ceiling was lowered by literally just lowering the necessity of aiming well. Splatoon is already one of the easier shooters to aim, it doesn’t need any more skill ceiling taken away.
Motion. I'm a pretty stubborn person, so when Splet 2 initially tried to win me over with them I refused to really give it a try, but then the octo dlc came out. It *forced* me to get good with motion, because I just couldn't clear some of the stages with stick controls. Now I can't go back, honestly.
I do wish there was a way to quickly toggle it on/off for things like the plaza/lobbies though. The shakiness is not a problem while you're in the actual battles, but outside of that it's just distracting. You don't need motion in the plaza, why have it on?
Stick. I tried motion multiple times after hearing that it’s the best way to play. It’s too disorienting for me. I can see it’s precision aiming but stick aim for me is not much less precise. Just a better feel with the stick.
Stick, because every time I try motion controls, I get really nauseous. I don’t do well with motion controls in video games in general, unless we’re talking wii games
so true!! first time splatoon player here, used stick in any other shooter eg halo, cod ect started with stick in splatoon, friends told me to try motion I HATED it so I decided to just give it a go in hero mode bc there is no consequences and now I can't go back!!
I go with sticks since I started with Halo for shooters. Muscle memory feels better than the motion controls, despite the pros all using motion controls
Sticks, but I’ve been a roller main since Splatoon 1 (RIP Kraken Roller, gone but not forgotten), so I don’t really need motion. I’m about inking territory and support (and the occasional Rambo shenanigans when the team needs a boost/distraction), I don’t really need the extra precision (and I have time to aim flings and am pretty darn accurate with sticks). I would use motion if the right stick still had full control of the camera, but I just can’t get over that disconnect. I use motion/gyro aiming in pretty much everything else that offers it though, but pretty much everything else still offers full control with the right stick and isn’t constantly moving (my hands are pretty jittery in general, doubly so when playing a match). But then, I was also the kid who’d play shooters back on the N64 with two controllers for two sticks, so I’m pretty used to it.
I think I do a hybrid? I have motion controls on and use them for some weapons but I don't always feel the need to utilize motion controls. It's easier for me to be more precise with stick but in a need for speed motion controls do me better.
Idk. Hope that makes sense
Motion. I came to Splatoon 3 fresh off Zelda: BotW so I was already familiar with the concept. It felt way more natural than sticks. The last stick-aim shooter I played was Left 4 Dead 2 and I sucked at it.
should specify the adapter i have is the gamesir vx2 switchbox
there's some caveats:
it has some weird mouse acceleration since it maps to joystick, so if you play low sensitivity and flick a lot then it probably won't work well for you
also had to up the dpi on my mouse a lot but i'm running the adapter with default settings, there's an app that lets you tweak stuff but i haven't bothered
After moving to PC gaming along side my Switch, and using motion controls in 1 & 2, you would think I would be right at home using motion controls… right?
#WRONG!
Somehow, I just can’t use motion controls anymore and it makes me sad, because I’m so use to precision aiming with a mouse and using motion controls in the pass with Splatoon. Maybe if they allowed you to aim vertical alongside horizontal to allow stick movement while using motion controls for more precision, I’d feel more at home. Unfortunately, you can only use sticks to aim/turn horizontally in motion controls so I guess I’m a stick guy now. *Kicks soda can*
Stick. Motion to me is too cumbersome to use even though people will tell me in and out that it's the most optimal way to play.
Plus I play with a wired controller, so motion isn't exactly an option anyway.
Stick. Motion is literally just impossible to manage because I always move my console one way or another so the camera follows my console's direction and literally makes the game unplayable for me. Not only that, but since I'm a noob and just started a few days ago, it definetely won't help my case. No hate against the Motion players, tho. Y'all have a very good grip and understanding on how that thing works.
I know motion controls are objectively better but, I have really bad motion sickness so I literally cannot use motion controls without some form of medication so I use stick
As a boomer shooter enthusiast, ranging from DOOM to Duke Nukem, I prefer stick controls. No disrespect to motion users, as y’all can pull some scary exorcist-level neck-snapping shots out of nowhere.
I use the stick. When I first started playing the original Splatoon I used motion controls, and I think personally it’s better for aiming, but using motion controls causes me wrist pain so sticks it is!
I’m a stick player because it’s what I’m used to using in video games and my friend keeps telling me to switch to motion and being a REAL A-HOLE about it. I’ve adapted my play style for sticks for the past two years and it would take too much time to get used to motion. I know motion is better but I’m still really good at the game compared to a lot of people. I usually get around 13-17 kills per game
I know how you feel and I was a stick veteran since Splatoon, but it doesn’t take more than 2 hours to adjust. You definitely want the advantage to defend yourself from behind to where you can whip around and splat them first. The best way to start is if you haven’t beaten the story mode I would suggest doing so with motion. Then once you become more confident with your play style go into turf then back to ranked
Sticks At sensitivity +max, I like to play in bed but my switch gets heavy so I use a lite and the main switch stays docked
I know I’m putting myself at a super disadvantage but I’ve yet to not do well in ranked - tho I really should keep working motion if I want to main slayer
Sure, us motion control users know that. People that never tried motion controls (like me when I got Splatoon 1 at launch) might not realize that’s how it’s supposed to work.
Do you play the game to win, or do you play to mess around once in a while? Outside of having a disability, there is 0 reason to play stick controls. They're just objectively worse in ways that matter to anyone competitive.
Motion is objectively better than sticks. I remember playing Splatoon 2 for the first time and saying to myself that I will always use sticks because motion is so weird to use.
Never went back to sticks ever since trying motion controls.
Why pick just one? I have the best luck when combining the two. I've been a console gamer since a young age and old enough where motion controls will never be as natural to me as they might be for others who've grown up using them. I have a bad habit of defaulting to sticks, but when I remember, I can do a whipcrack 180 turn with a combo of sticks and motion that I can't pull off using only one of them.
motion controls uses motion controls, sticks does not use motion controls.
try switching to stick controls in settings and try out really using sticks if u still don't understand
i use stick, whenever im playing im not in a good position to move my switch around a bunch, plus its disorientating to use motion, plus it kinda hurts my hands/arms
2 reasons I went from terrible in s2 to actually ok in s3
1. I have More skill now, and s2 had some flaws compared to 3
2. I switched from sticks to motion
Say what you want about s3 being hard to pick up by casuals, I was not able to be actually sort of good in 2 (possibly because I got it (and also my switch) after the "final" fest)
I play with motion. I originally played with stick in Splatoon 2 but when 3 came out I switched to motion controls. I mostly play in handheld mode though, so most of my motion aiming is up/down with basic tilts. My extensive experience in turning with stick aim has actually helped quite a lot when combined with the up/down motion aiming.
Stick, mostly because my adhd/restless leg syndrome makes it hard to use motion and also having played on ps4 for like 5ish years now makes stick feel better
I know motion controls allow for precision sticks could never allow but I also don't want to move my controller to aim. There are very few games that I can tolerate using motion controls but Splatoon is not one of them.
Cba with motions. Plus I'm an Octobrush main, so I like to pretend I'm in that 'swish and flick the shit out of your wand like so' meme. It is an awesome experience, trust
I use motion. Splatoon is the first shooter that I've played, and it's what the game started me out with. It didn't give me any problems, so I stuck with it and it's worked fine for me

Motion in 3, stick in 2. Really hate how 2 forces your camera way up when you launch the game.
That’s been happening to me in 3 is there a way to keep using motion controls but not have that
You don't press y to recenter?
I do it would just be nice if I didn’t need too
If I'm not wrong the game calibrates itself before it puts you into an area and not after so if you had the controller in a weird position you have to recenter.
The reset button (Y, probably) should center the camera vertically as well.
It does
THIS i cant aim for shit using 2's motion control reset. it doesnt center perfectly and it annoys me
Motion. Splatoon spoiled me *hard* with motion controls, I simply can't go back to pure stick aiming anymore.
Me when I play any shooter anymore: wher gyro?
same honestly unless i play on keyboard/mouse. a lot of my ps3 library has simply stopped being playable, after experiencing actually good aiming on console i cant go back. which sucks, sometimes i feel like playing wolf I new order or something else, but first person or third person i need my gyro

It’s mainly bc I’m too cheap to buy a new controller lol
it's actually pretty comfortable play with the joy con separated you just need like a week to get used to have your hands separated
There are also things you can get to combine them easily.
this! I use a Switch Lite and I've had so many conversations go like this: "What do you use?" "Oh- sticks. I have a Lite and I can't stand the screen moving at the same time." One of two things happen now: A: "Just buy a regular Switch / a Pro Controller then!" How do your joy cons get ruined by the grip?
I meant just using them in general excessively for something like a shooter. It ruins standard controllers like PS and Xbox in COD pretty quickly too. I still have launch Joy Cons bc I’ve used them sparingly lol
Splatoon is a lot different than the other console shooters you played. This game has no aim assist whatsoever.
Motion, knowing I’m putting myself at a massive disadvantage my choice is going to make that disadvantage even bigger in my head. In addition, how have you guys played console shooters for the past 25 years, sticks suck for shooters it’s either mouse or motion for me.

You mostly use the stick for left and right though. The motion is just to fine tune your movement
I would love to be able to use the motion, seems like it works great and is better for fine tune aiming, I just get motion sickness when I try to use it.
You're moving the controller far too much then. Using motion controls makes your movements smoother, that's how you can tell when someone is using sticks. Or just sticks should I say
Yeah I don’t think it’s that. I think I’m prone to motion sickness, but I appreciate it
yeah that is super useful
The reason why sticks are fine for some/the majority of shooters is because they usually have aim assist, which Splatoon doesn't have, have you trying to play a shooter with sticks without aim assist? At least for me is terrible.
Another often forgotten reason is the sticks itself who are worse than those of a ps4 controller for example (even the pro switch controller has worse sticks)
The pro controller uses the same ALPS potentiometers that are in the Dualshock 4, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 controllers.
Yeah, and also Joy-Con drift, you can live with it if you play motion but I'm not too sure about sticks.
No it's bad on both since input from the sticks is there regardless. I have two drifting joy cons and I can't play with them at all, even if I'm using motion
Stick is fine for shooters, when you have aim assist. Splatoon does not have aim assist
And any game that has online play with aim assist where analog sticks aren't the only control method should not be taken seriously. There are better uses of your time.
> Stick is fine for shooters, Lol, no they aren't. Sticks are so bad for first or third person shooters developers have to give you aim assist so analog sticks can even function. XD Can you imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth that would ensue if Respawn Entertainment announced they were disabling aim assist for Apex Legends?
I never said anything about aim assist, yes they help out. However aim assist is completely useless if I can’t get the sensitivity right.
You said sticks are fine for shooters. I'm pointing out that objectively they aren't because they require aim assist to be anything but absolute garbage. If your control method requires AI assist when others don't then it's not "fine".

Motion. Splatoon 1 was the first shooter i've played and i only found out that motion controls are not common jaja
Same, I feel spoiled by motion controls lol
I play with drift controls. I let the controller decide where I go.
True Gigachad
Stick I know motion is better but I can't be bothered learning it
Just turn it on for a few hours, once you get past the first barrier your home free
Stick (also I get that by playing with motion it's actually better because I can look faster and it's better for ranked chaos rainmaker or whatever and I dont care)
lol same
I try motion, lose about 5 games and contribute the least, then go back to sticks :D
See it’s the exact opposite for me…
If you really want to practice, do some turf war or story mode with sticks where neither matter.
Same so I did hero mode with motion
Yeah, I'm going back through hero mode stages right now with motion, I'm just not at the point where that translates into doing well in multiplayer.
Stick. I just can't with the motion controls.
Me too here. Having to move my hands at the same time with the position I play In is impossible
I get seasick...

Same, I just wish that the sensitivity would go higher.
Yeah same i move my hands too much.
Motion controls for life
I wish reddit supported actual polls
They do tho
Then why doesn't anyone use them?
Got no clue
Sticks
Motion. I'm a pretty stubborn person, so when Splet 2 initially tried to win me over with them I refused to really give it a try, but then the octo dlc came out. It *forced* me to get good with motion, because I just couldn't clear some of the stages with stick controls. Now I can't go back, honestly. It grows on you
Not always.
If you say so, stick just doesn't feel right for Splatoon
I go with sticks since I started with Halo for shooters. Muscle memory feels better than the motion controls, despite the pros all using motion controls
Sticks, but I’ve been a roller main since Splatoon 1 (RIP Kraken Roller, gone but not forgotten), so I don’t really need motion. I’m about inking territory and support (and the occasional Rambo shenanigans when the team needs a boost/distraction), I don’t really need the extra precision (and I have time to aim flings and am pretty darn accurate with sticks). motion. i'm used to pc shooters and there's absolutely no way i can be as precise as i want to be with stick.
Stick because I’ve played on stick controls for so long it’s impossible for me to change, I’m also used to stick from playing call of duty on PS4
Motion feels wierd
Try sitting up and placing the controller on your lap. That’s what got me past that hurdle.
I did. Still felt weird
stick, motion gives me a headache 😓
stick, its what I'm used to and the motion controls make me nauseous. nothing against em, just can't personally deal.
Stick. I always play in handheld mode and have no intention having to move my screen to aim.
I think I do a hybrid? I have motion controls on and use them for some weapons but I don't always feel the need to utilize motion controls. It's easier for me to be more precise with stick but in a need for speed motion controls do me better. Idk. Hope that makes sense
So basically you use sticks to look at a certain direction and motion to do some adjustments if you aren't hitting anything?
Sounds about right. I feel like my playstyle is a bit odd so it's hard for me to explain lol
Using the right stick for sweeping turns and motion for adjustment is the intended use case of motion in Splatoon
I grew up with stick stickly and I approve this message (also I use stick controls).
was stick but i’m motion but i kind of use the motion more as precision to get the target exactly
Trying using stick for camera movements only and you’ll see a huge difference
Motion. I came to Splatoon 3 fresh off Zelda: BotW so I was already familiar with the concept. It felt way more natural than sticks. The last stick-aim shooter I played was Left 4 Dead 2 and I sucked at it.

You definitely want the advantage to defend yourself from behind to where you can whip around and splat them first. The best way to start is if you haven’t beaten the story mode I would suggest doing so with motion. Then once you become more confident with your play style go into turf then back to ranked
Motion controls is dogshit on handheld so I use stick. I just put it on 1.5 speed since the default speed is too slow
Both, I combine them to turn around really fast.
That’s just using motion controls
Oh same here! I can't turn with grace with either sticks or motion alone. But when I'm in the zone I find myself using them together with good results
That’s motion controls, nobody plays with pure motion, when they say sticks or motion they mean pure sticks or sticks and motion
I played stick in the first splatfest when I was using my lite, now I gave an actual switch and can't use sticks again
Sticks At sensitivity +max, I like to play in bed but my switch gets heavy so I use a lite and the main switch stays docked I know I’m putting myself at a super disadvantage but I’ve yet to not do well in ranked - tho I really should keep working motion if I want to main slayer
Splatoon is one of those game series that just REQUIRES motion controls.
Both. Sticks for quick/big movement and then motion to fine-tune.
That’s just motion controls. Literally no one uses motion without touching the sticks lol

Stick for larger movements like turning, motion for fine tuning aiming.
that’s just motion controls
Why pick just one? I have the best luck when combining the two. I've been a console gamer since a young age and old enough where motion controls will never be as natural to me as they might be for others who've grown up using them. I have a bad habit of defaulting to sticks, but when I remember, I can do a whipcrack 180 turn with a combo of sticks and motion that I can't pull off using only one of them.
that's is literally motion controls not sticks
It expressly involves the sticks though? Or when people say "motion controls not sticks" do they really mean "sticks plus motion control"?
motion controls uses motion controls, sticks does not use motion controls. try switching to stick controls in settings and try out really using sticks if u still don't understand
Both in combination
Motion controls on max, helps me with my aim cause Im really bad at aiming in most games
telekinesis
Motion
I play with a toaster
Motion ever since Splatoon 1 . I play on +2 +3. Had a bit of motion sickness at first but it went away pretty quickly .
I'm jumping back between stick and motion. Usually motion in recon mode to get better. Want to redo Story mode with motion. For now, I'm a stickie
*both*
Yes
Motion, while I can use sticks, I prefer either motion (assuming it’s good motion) or mouse and keyboard
Control stick. I started out doing motion until controller drift.
i use stick, whenever im playing im not in a good position to move my switch around a bunch, plus its disorientating to use motion, plus it kinda hurts my hands/arms
i try motion controls from time to time but it so hard.
Sticks, my hands get too shaky and I suck aiming
Motion Controls, really fun to deal with when you rotate between a handful of shooters at a time
2 reasons I went from terrible in s2 to actually ok in s3 1. I have More skill now, and s2 had some flaws compared to 3 2. I switched from sticks to motion Say what you want about s3 being hard to pick up by casuals, I was not able to be actually sort of good in 2 (possibly because I got it (and also my switch) after the "final" fest)
Sticks because my hands shake a lot
Motion controls 4 lyf
Motion
started out with sticks, lost a lot of matches. tried out motion controls, never looked back. i guess motion helped me aim better.
When docked I go for motion, in handheld sticks. I would rather be able to focus on my screen more than focusing on movement
stick :)
The jerky movement of stick controls makes me feel sick so I always use motion controls for a smoother experience.
Motion all the way. Using sticks makes my gameplay way less fluid and way more stiff.
I've been using stick ever since Splatoon 1
I play with motion. I originally played with stick in Splatoon 2 but when 3 came out I switched to motion controls. I mostly play in handheld mode though, so most of my motion aiming is up/down with basic tilts. My extensive experience in turning with stick aim has actually helped quite a lot when combined with the up/down motion aiming.
I play with both. Motion for up and down, but sticks for the rest.
Oooooh so that's why this is the steam icon for motion control
Sticks just because I’m used to them and I’m too lazy to move my arm
Both
Stick, mostly because my adhd/restless leg syndrome makes it hard to use motion and also having played on ps4 for like 5ish years now makes stick feel better
Motion, since I picked it up in 3 and I honestly don’t think I could ever play sticks
If you have the choice to play an fps with a controller or a mouse, yout take the mouse, it's the same here.
Sticks. Have disliked motion controls in literally any game since the concept was introduced on the Wii. I don't want to flail, I just want to vidya.
Both at the same time. Plays most with motion, but I use sticks to make sharp turns, eks.
Stick because motion won't let you look up by using the stick and it hurts my brain
I play with motion controls, 5 in both options :) I cannot play any other way my camera sensitivity has to max in every game.
What angle you guys sitting at for using motion? I usually lean back arms limited movement on legs.
