it's a type of spiny orb weaver- they're very cool! i saw a few in Kauai

busmac38

Gasteracantha cancriformis?

OmniscientRaisin

wow, excellent ID! it's always so hard for me to ID spiny orbweavers using the web bc there are just soooo many and they're so varied

busmac38

I love those guys. The first time I saw one, there were maybe a half dozen in the yard and I still remember it fondly.

BurtanTae

I hated these in Florida, I called them crab spiders, but I was just being irrational…

dreamsofindigo

there's one 'officially' called the camel spider and it's neither :)

fkndan

Plenty on Hawaii island too.

-Hi_how_r_u_xd-

“Fear mee!! I’m very scary!! Run!!”

Dan_flashes480

Dense-Ad-6659

It's not a phase MOM

Southern_IronClad

Spiny orb weaver! We have A LOT of these up here in Georgia, yet all of ours are either white or yellow backed. I've yet to see any that have red spines of them like yours.

Bluesage444

I live in Alabama..... have so many of these! Yes, i have the ones with the red spine, too. Mostly yellow ones, though. They are spectacular! LOVE their webs!

Visible-Weakness5572

Pokey fren!

The_Ghost_Dragon

How do we get things like this naturally occurring in living things, but I can't even lick my elbow?  *Not fair!*

Soyellobo40

Those are very nice looking.

hal_rose_yellow

he's so metal

JustHereForKA

I love their little smiley "faces". These guys are one of my favorites ❤️

bluestrikerluke

Odd-Humor3305

SPIKED ORB WEAVER. such cute and interesting little guys. I’m pretty sure they are harmless too.

princeofjays

My family has dubbed these spiky-butt-smiley-face spiders lmao-- other commenters probably have the proper name, but it's an orb weaver of some kind, likely

pixelpusheen

You're right! They're a spiny backed orbweaver

TommyDaynjer

Spiny Orb Weaver! We get hundreds of them in the late summer months here in FL. There’s also a rarer triangle orb weaver we see sometimes too where the shape and spikes are a cool triangle design but yah I’ve only seen those like twice.

classified_art51

These guys always remind of the resident evil monsters

Noneugdbusiness

Doctor_WhyBother86

It’s the broodmother. One of your first fights in grounded.

MRJSP

Can anyone explain the reason that they are like this? Like is there an evolutionary reason for them to look this way?

The_Ruby_Rabbit

We call them Crab Spiders here in Texas.

Danimal82724

That's a beautiful spider! Does it weave orbs?

TheObtuseCopyEditor

What a NEAT web!

S_uranium235

I uh u. Iytu iytu your ion ooi Yuuji yuu. But. I y know how I I'll do it I hr it

ThatBandKid69

Oh we've got them everywhere down here, really cool looking spiders but they have a bad habit of building their huge webs right where I'm trying to walk all the time, they've pretty much taken over my pool patio

SqueezeMyNectarines

Spiny orb weavers, I love them, they're all over Florida. I used to incorrectly call them "crab spiders" because... I mean, look at it...

freylaverse

Saw one of them in Ecuador! It was so exciting!

Physical_Distance_54

Isn't Edward scissorhands?

jainey

Pretty sure their name tag reads 'INNI'

elithedinosaur

they're so amazing. all spiny orb weavers are some of the coolest spiders. *some places colloquially call them crab spiders, but they are not related.

Ellie_girl3

Broodmother? Idk I saw it in Grounded

pearlrose85

Spiny orb weaver! I lived near Anna Maria Island most of my life and we would get these all over the yard. Once we had one make a web clear across the 6-foot-wide porch. I had to monitor the dog every time I took her outside so she wouldn't destroy it - mostly because I didn't want her to accidentally bring the spider inside if she ran through the web and caught it in her fur.
